Will we be able to joke about Obama ?

britexpat

We've heard all the Dubya and Sarah palin jokes.. Jokes about Clinton and Nixon. Made a few, some hurtful, some funny..

Obama presents a different challenge.

Will jokes about Obama be misconstrued in this politically Correct world ?

I THINK SO!

In a way I'll miss Bush! Now he was the butt of all jokes!! haha. Its def. harder to joke about Barack, and not necessarily from the racial front. Let's admit it, the guy is respected. Most Clinton jokes involve Monica, so until this man slips up...

alexa who would have believed that the white people will vote for a black man in america,??? i mean you can never predict the future . if someone had said that a black man will be the president of the strongest nation on earth a year ago i would have said that the person was on drugs, but looks whats happening today? never say never!!!

Red- let me make myself clear, I don't think there is any harm in joking about Obama, I am just curious why there has to be racial jokes. Many blacks just like many whites don't like racial jokes and perhaps feel the same way I do about them. They encourrage our youth to be racially divided, youth don't think the way we do and they think literally ( most of the time) So, to me jokes just keep racism going. Doesn't matter if its a white or black person telling them. Matter of fact I think racial joke about blacks is even worst when a black is telling them or other oppressed races.

If I were an african citizen my reason for voting would totally be different to voting if I were an american. Africa is a basically a black country, I more than likely would not have been discriminated by other blacks as the in the way we are discriminated here in the western society. There fore I would be voting based on pure politically policies if there was a white person running for president and I agreed with his policies than I'd vote for them. Given that I really am not a follower of politics here in the US or canada I would say, if I were american and had to vote in this particular election then I think you know the out come of my vote. I'D have voted for history!

REPORTER (to Barack Obama): At the Academy Awards, Jon Stewart made fun of the fact that your last name, Obama, sounds like Osama, the name of the most hated man on the planet. What is your reaction?

BARACK OBAMA: Besides the unfortunate name similarity, Osama Bin-Laden and I have nothing in common. One of us is a confident, ethnic man with devoted supporters and a clear vision for the future, and the other is about to become President.

There has been white governmental powers in africa and look what has happened in the past with south africa (just one country to mention} that president was voted in by blacks as well as a majority whites. I am still baffled at the fact that a white government discriminated against a country that is originally, dominantly black. how in the heck did they get away with it. Also, just to inform you, white americans were not the first to inhabited the united states. Again the US was built by the sweat, blood and death of many immigrants who were not white (yes whites did help build the US) but yet other races other than white were kept out of power. Anyway, I don't think the african people in general would be as mean spirited towards a white president there as they may be here.

You're quite right Britexpat. To the average man who has not had the fortune of being educated, the white man is probably regarded with mistrust. But to those who have had the priviledge of learning from the legacy of many distinguished scholars who happened to be white eg those in the judiciary/scientific fields etc we know better than to judge a significant portion of a race based on the idiocy of one man. All comes done to education I guess, and quite frankly the West has more educated people and is thus expected to make the more informed and less emotionally driven decision.

Britexpat I think my generation is quite fed up with "the old guards" and ESPECIALLY the deeply rooted tribalism. If a fresh face came up that was not of the same skin colour but who had political clout, say Rahm Emanuel ;) for example, I really believe people would vote for him. Whether he'd get ENOUGH votes to put him in power, is a whole different issue all together. ;)

May I just say though the situation is NOT the same as it was in the US. With respect to the US elections 'black' represented the historically oppressed race. In Africa and many parts of the world 'white' represents 'the oppressor'. You cannot compare the two situations. Therefore, you cannot compare the mindset of voters who are presented with a black man in the US as a candidate for Presid. and those voters in Africa who are presented with a white man.

I think that you may be an exception. I agree with your comments regarding Asians. I have some Asian friends from Uganda and South Africa and they are more focused on business than involvement in politics.

However, i don't belive that the "atmosphere" is yet ripe for a white guy to be taken "seriously" in politics. People would instantly associate him with Ian Smith or similar..

By labda06• 13 Nov 2008 07:03

If the man or woman was white and stood his own ground with respect to politics, then I would certainly vote for him/her. We have plenty of Kenyans who are caucasian/asian...but do they get involved in politics? Rarely! The Asians are the Doctors and the lawyers and the businessmen while the Caucaions are more into farming etc...Perhaps they're just not interested or their own fears of "will I be accepted given the colonial past" is what stops them.

Personally I would vote for the man/woman whose character and policies appealed to me most. If he/she happens to be white, my vote would still go to that person.

I was sent my first Obama joke yesterday...a truck load of his "relatives" on route to the White House, it was soooo funny but it took me a few seconds to think of it as a joke and not an attack on black people, Africans in general etc etc. I soon sent it off to most of my friends and family and the responses I've received so far were all "ROFL" and the like. I dont think Obama will be taking jokes about himself too seriously because that will be an unncessary distraction (like he doesn't have bigger things to worry about eg. which puppy to get his daughters ;). So if he can do it, maybe the rest of us Black folk can, but lol, it'll take time!

I didn't take your statement as anti-black. However it was prudish, something I would expect a person of your race to say. Trust me I have heard it all before. I feel bad that anybody is discriminated against not matter the color of their skin, I would like to remind you though that the white race never in history as a whole have been discriminated against for the color of their skin. Not only in america but in just about every place you set your foot on on this planet there is hatered for the black race. You as a white person have not been systematically discounted in jobs, houses, prohibited from traveling, denied food, clothing ect.. And I am not talking just about the past. Racism is an epidemic, not only by whites and blacks, by every race. so, you see when you make remarks like the one earlier than I have to you correct yourself.

when I listen to the news or read papers here in north america, there is always someone being racially discriminated against, I have seen stories about east indians, chinese, blacks, native indians being discriminated against but I have yet to see a story about a white person being racially discriminated against especially in mainstream america. Is this they are not reporting it? or is it because it is practically a non- issue for them.

Anyway as bad as I feel for your friend and you being discriminated against I feel for you. But take a step back and look at all the brown faces around you that have had racism casted upon them all their lives and it ain't gonna go anywhere soon.

Alexa, I don't think you realise the tone of the posts you have made, perhaps you did not realise it. Why is it ok for you to make "unfriendly posts" but when I pose the question seeking your reasoning mine are considered unfriendly? Sorry but some things I feel strongly about. This is one of them. Using your yardstick I consider your posts quite unfriendly as well.

folk I uploaded this pic for a bit just to show you that I am black and even though my daughter (in the back ground) is very light skinned, in north america she is considered black. I am mixed myself. But I am black- blacker than Obama. Obama is considered black. When a person of another race calls him the "N" word it is because he is black. He was born black and when he dies he will be black.

There was a purpose for me to write "Negrito," in most latin america, specially in the Caribbean Island is like saying in a dear terms to some one you love or a close friend. Is not use in any prejudice way.

The sad part was is that I learn the definition of the "N", when I join the Army, It puzzle the hell out of me, when black soldiers will call each other the "N" word and my supervisor was black. The explanation was, it is not correct for others to use it, but among our race is just a cultural thing.

Through the years, I did establish a different definition for it and would not accept the usage of the word "N" and many other innuendos of racism towards others races in my presence or allow any other soldiers that I was responsible for or you will face some kind of disciplinary penalty under my recommendations in front of the commander in charge.

yet , the jokes are always there, but in a civilize manner.

Yes , I did celebrate with tears of cheer and overwhelm satisfaction the Nomination of our 44th and first African-American US president.

Its the elephant in the room. Are we going to ignore it or keep talking about it until something changes. Personally I wont tire of talking. I'm curious to know though whether you were implying it's always blacks who come up with the race card?

Tallg, Iv found myself saying "Im black...." and have people trying to correct me by saying "You're not black, you're brown". And though I understand what they're saying...I'm black, period. And I always make sure they get that.

David_B (lol at the Native American People thing, haha)and najamss, I find it quite ironic how "non-blacks" will quickly say "Oh she's black" when the person is obviously mixed race...but you have someone who accomplishes something big, like Obama and suddenly its "He's HALF WHITE though"...lol. Obama himself is proud of his caucasion lineage. But he's black. Dont take my word for it, lol, ask him yourself. hehe

najamss - it's a definition. He's an African American - i.e. a Black American. They don't have a "scale of of blackness" to determine if someone qualifies to be called black or not.

Think about it - most black people are not actually black if you take the literal definition of the colour, are they? Ditto most white people aren't actually white.

yep this story is a great example of what racism does to people. In my teen years I grew to dislike black people myself, and I am black. As I got older I accessed why I disliked my own race. It was simply because of what I heard in the media, what I seen in the media and of course from people in my surroundings, blacks and whites. as a black person, if all you hear about other blacks are the negative things then you grow to believe this. And sure I hear blacks call The "N" words to others mostly in the music, sometimes I even hear other blacks say whats up my "N". but being black doen't mean that all black people feel that it is ok for this to be happening.

By the way brit what was your reply when you heard this. I bet you interjected and said. listen what your saying is not right and its a racist remark, please don't use those comments while in my presents! lol

Hate to say it, but I agree with you. The USA is a melting pot, hence racial/ethnic differences are more readily accepted. Europe on the whole has countries with specific ethnic mixes.

I agree that we are not yet ready for a black leader, but we are moving in the right direction..

As for racism, it exists in all walks of life. As I said previously, I have met Africans, who are racist against other Africans.

Funniest true story.. I worked with a few African Americans. One guy, whilst black, dressed like an "ivy league" type and always said that he was from a mixed race.. One day they got into an argument after a few drinks.. One of the African Americans turned to me and said - quote " Don't listen to him man, the Mo##er Fu##er is a N###er, no matter what he says"..

You know we all have grown up hearing stereotypes about other races and we beleive them right into our adulthood. Why? One thing I noticed about this site and a few others like it is there is always jokes about indians, phillipinos, arabs and blacks but I rearly see jokes posted regarding whites. I wonder why that is? especially on this site because I am sure by the topics that read not everyone on here is white.

Dopeople realize what racial joking and plain ole discrimination does to the people you are doing it to. Do people realize that blacks are the most feared and hated by people that haven't visited an african country, that have no black friends or who aren't even born yet lol..

And here is something else to think about if you are a person reading this that is not white. If you are one to be discriminating against any body I pity you if you ever come to north america or even europe. Beleive me it won't be long before you feel the way someone your making fun of feels. If ever you notice you can only get jobs in the cleaning industry, taxi industry, or some meanial job or you can't get the education you deserve because your not ivy enough then don't complain because those that have experienced it knows what it is like.

Honestly, I believe the "N" word originated from the British during the Empire and colonization era.

Specially during the times of the British slave trade to the United States.

My views:

1- The United States still a very young Nation, who has merged from the days colonization and slavery to whom we are right know. Either you like it or not.

2- We have shown the world, that we are willing to change, adapt and overcome by a popular democratic vote.

Including the election by the people, of the first African-American USA President.

3- I believe that the Europeans need to start electing a black president or prime minister more often.

Honestly I believe that Europe, still divided and is full of racism and prejudice today towards the black population.

The United States has reach the cross roads of racism and equal opportunity by electing a black President.

The rest of the world should learn from this moment in history.

Correct me, If I'm wrong my English People.

Maybe your next Prime minister is black or the French will elect a black President.

Dammed sure I will love to see that in my life time.

I doubt, if that ever happens in Europe at all.

Hopefully some of those royal English kids will fall in love and get married with a Mulatta that will tear their butt upside down.

That will defiantly will break "The English Royal White iceberg in half."

What percentage of a persons ethnic background qualifies them to be black, brown, yellow, white or green? I overheard a visibly caucasian American gentleman telling someone that he was a "Red Indian". The only "Indian" thing about him was his long hair, he didn't even have a horse. Barack Obama is "black" yet his mother was "white". 50/50. Is the glass half full or half empty? He was born in the US and he is an American...period.

Listen folks my mother is white, father is black, We grew up in a white surroundings all my life. I come from an almost remote part of canada. I never new racism until I left my home town to live in a bigger city. I never heard the word Nigger, Honkey or what ever it is they call each other untill then. When we got in arguments at school I never heard a white kid call me that name and I never called them racial names. As a matter of fact I can remember the first time I was called a nigger, it was by a 5 year old white child. I wonder now about that child and I am willing to bet that that child hates any race or anything that is not white. Racism starts with in the family and is carried out by people who make comments like timtan.

For those of you that are saying We Blacks think that it is ok for a black to call a white man racial names, I think you got it all wrong. I have a feeling you are basing this view on what you see on TV and in the media. Average, white people and black people don't call each others these names and don't practice racism, this is why we now have obama. As far as some people having chips on their shoulders, I don't know if you are white or not but in the case you are not white. I'd like for you to come to north america or europe and lets see how long it will take for you to be discriminated against, wheater it be because you are arab, indian, muslim, or just simply because your skin is not white. Nowhere in this world have I travelled have I been more disrespected by people than in my own country canada. Not just by whites but by others who think they are racially above other people.

If it seems that some blacks living here in the western world have a "BIG OLE CHIP" on there shoulder then your probably right. I personally don't have a chip on my shoulder. However, I like to have my opinion on these forms voiced.

I am always excited to go to sleep! In anticipation of the new experience I will find awaiting me.

The Tiger Woods joke is a great favourite of mine.

Kenyaqueen misunderstood my point. All, I was trying to say was that with Obama in office, people will have to be careful with the type of humour used. What worked in caricuturizing Dubya, will not be acceptable for Obama - hence the mention of the monkey cartoon.

I personally believe that for Obama, the lines taken will be sinilar to those used for Condi Rice - more high brow.

Sure white comics get away with it, george karlen, is a great example, big time! of course he based his making racial jokes on the same stereotypes that black comics do. He was great at it and and blacks or other races couldn't have been too offended, he always filled a room with blacks, whites, indians ect.. way. There are other whites and east indian comics as well, I think they tell the jokes in away that was not offensive to the public. I do think for the most part, black comics tell jokes about blacks that portray how they are truly viewed by society both black society and others. Years before black comics came along there were always stereotypes out there that basically came from the media, which in turn helped racism flourish. The public especially whites didn't believe that there was racism against blacks. So, u c blacks brought these stereotyes of themselves to the stage. Now, you can truly see that there is racism out there.

A lot of black comedians base their whole act around black and white stereotypes. The jokes aren't necessarily racist, but a white comedian would never get away with doing the same thing.

labda, I appreciate that, really though! other than some dumb azz black comics somewhere out there in TV land, I don't think you will hear the common black person making jokes about other black people or other races at that. Fact is is that most of us black people know better to not make racial fun of other people, simply because we know how much it hurts.

And yes white people can make up jokes about anybody they want! after all where would one expect that racism started.

When (not if) jokes about Obama start flying around I don't think there'll be a problem as long as they aren't racist. There will be plenty of things to take the p!ss out of him for.

But I think I see your point Brit - the problem occurs when people don't understand the joke. The perfect example being the cartoon of Obama dressed as an Islamic extremist on the front of whichever US magazine it was.

But I agreed that a monkey portrayal would probably not go down too well, regardless of the intent behind it.

(btw Rizks - only Obama's Dad is black.)

LOL at kenyaqueen.

Britexpat, why would you want to poke fun at Obama? He's the sweetest little thing ever! No but seriously, I don't think too many Black people would react "well" to an Obama joke unless they were the ones telling it. :S It's different when its nice and innocent like your Tiger Woods joke. But you put a monkey in the sentence and my sense of humour flies out the door. LOL

A british prick.

Compared to the earlier guys we didn't need to make up stuff coz so much of it was real.. With Obama I guess we'll have to wait till he slips up... :)

YES!

Racism is bound to rear its ugly head..

Perhaps I am wrong, but a simple example..

We've all seen the caricature of Dubya portrayed as a monkey.. Would you be able to do the same with Obama??
