Why just women?

Miss Mimi
By Miss Mimi

Not a bad idea. Stronger laws and pictures showing exactly what modest dress is would definitely clear up a lot of issues, but why just focus on women?

http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/government/uae-culture-minister-to-be-...

Abu Dhabi: The Federal National Council is to demand at Tuesday’s session that a law be issued on a UAE dress code so that local culture and sensibilities be respected by force of the law.

Hamad Ahmad Al Rahoumi, a member from Dubai, will be quizzing Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, on the issue.

Al Rahoumi told Gulf News there has to be a law and it has to be respected.

“There has to be respect for the people in the UAE. Residents and tourists should dress modestly and not spread their bad habits for our children to see and imitate,” he said.

The FNC representative stressed the dress code should ensure all residents and visitors respect the tradition of the country in all the aspects and not misuse the freedom.

“I am not demanding that visitors and residents wear our clothes, but their dress should be respectful and not revealing,” Al Rahoumi said, stressing that women wearing revealing clothes are against the UAE’s culture and offend local sensibilities.

The law, he said would target expatriates and tourists who violate the traditions, especially with regard to the dress code.

He also uggested that the law also tackle other “unacceptable behaviours” such as kissing in public.

“These behaviour affect our children, who learn from what they are experiencing.”

The representative also demanded that visitors and tourists be informed of the rules and that it is offensive to dress in shorts and mini-skirts or kiss in a shopping mall or in the streets.

“Dress code brochures should be given out at the airport and when the passport is stamped with the visa. Also, there should be big posters in malls and everywhere showing the rules and how women should dress decently.”

Right Brit, the major source of revenues left for Dubai is tourism and toll/parking fees/fines.

Abu Dhabi & Sharjah follows Saudi's cultures (conservative approach).

Fluffy123, you hate seeing men's hairy thighs during shopping?

Unless if the shorts are too tight..(what I mean by too tight is that you can see the division sign in the front) I don't think it is a crime to wear shorts for men..

common.

honestly yes men do dress inappropriately. but majority of indecent dress does come from women. you don't see men wearing midriffs and short skirts. And men don't have cleavage hanging out. the fashion industry creates more revealing cloths for women than the men's fashion industry does.

but men definitely need to be banned from wearing shorts. i hate seeing men's hairy thighs while im shopping. totally gross.

Why we talk only about UK, what about Russians and Africans too servicing locals of the country and Regional guests.

Late but least Dubai woke up for whatever reasons, its good.

I was just kidding with the UK tourist joke UK & Brit, forgot to add the ;)

There are lots of pro's in Dubai and Abu Dhabi (as there are in Doha) but you can't arrest every skimpily clad woman as a prostitute. Especially since most of them cover up in abaya when they go out to do their business.

In general the police here are concerned with stopping trafficking and busting up brothels, rather than arresting single pros. Same as in most countries.

"Yes, it is still going on, but honestly, you can't arrest every single person you think might be a prostitute (or you'd be arresting every tourist from the UK in Dubai)."

A bit harsh.. I know we sometimes like to mingle and have a good time, but .............

let me complete that for you Brit.

I think MM is forgetting that the these prostitutes in Dubai are servicing the locals as well as the Saudis that come over for the weekend. Dubai has never been the tourist destination for British single males they rather prefer to go to Thailand or Philippines.

Yes some lonely single men who are working in AUH and Dubai may frequent these places.

Then there are pros to suit the Budgets if you go to Naif road Deira area thats where your low end Pros are, where as in the Jumeraih Beach Hotel and towards Dubai Marina Area along with Sheikh Zayed Road Hotels cater for your top end market. The best of all are the House Orgies and parties at the locals..:)

Sorry for the little Hijack Miss Mimi just wanted to get the record straight. Now I wonder why they banned the Canadians from Free entry to the UAE..:)

I enjoyed my time in Abu Dhabi and yes Abu Dhabi is way ahead of Dubai in may ways.

Don't get all your information from TV Flor. Citizens arrests are not that cut and dry, and they depend on the severity of the crime.

And there is not such thing as citizens arrest in the UAE, so it would be harrassment pure and simple.

77% of sexual abusers are parents.

Parents buy their children's clothes.

Therefore parents buy kids sexy clothes and then want to rape them.

Can't you see the link between clothes and sexual assault?

The implementation is going to be very important. I really think brochures and posters demonstrating proper dress are excellent ideas and should be instituted even if a law isn't passed.

And I think the enforcement of the law needs to be in the hands of the police, not "concerned citizens" or self appointed muttawahs. If someone starts harassing someone for what they are wearing, than those people need to be arrested as well.

By flor1212• 13 Jun 2012 10:01
flor1212

it's the message not the actual implementation. I just look it like this, "some people will be lucky and some will not be". If you're caught, then you are unlucky, if not, so what. The "leniency" of authorities there is also compromised when they turned to tourism as their other source of income. So unless someone complained, the rule remained, "no harm, no foul". To some, it's the thrill or risk of tripping on the limits!

Actually the new law is also about the enforcement of things like public displays of affection.

And there are vice arrests every single day in Dubai. Just read the papers. Brothel owners and human traffickers are arrested all the time. And the punishments are harsh.

Yes, it is still going on, but honestly, you can't arrest every single person you think might be a prostitute (or you'd be arresting every tourist from the UK in Dubai).

I'm sorry Flor a country can't be Islamic. Does it pray 5 times a day and peform Hajj? Only people can be Islamic. A piece of dirt is just that.

This is all a storm in a tea cup. Maybe they should do something about the rampant prostitution in Dubai rather than the evil short wearers. Funny how none of the locals ever bring that up and there are no vice arrests.

Actually I think it will be passed. However I don't expect the dress code to be too harsh. No shoulders, no cleavage and nothing above the knee. And I suspect that it will only be enforced in public areas like malls.

If you read this article you will find that there actually is no law, so hence no punishment for "offenders".

I'm not complaining Brit. I think the laws are necessary. But I'm allowed to worry about how it will be enforced.

I could not understand this statement "It is NOT permissible for a man who believes in Allaah and His Messenger to put his hand in the hand of a women who is not permissible for him or who is not one of his mahrams. Whoever does that has wronged himself (i.e., sinned)"...a mahram, as per WIKI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahram) is "Anyone who a Muslim is not allowed to marry is mahram, if they are of the opposite sex and have reached puberty".

What I don't get is that when local women go home they wear the same clothes as western around their children/family. Is it the issue that they don't want children to see knees and shoulders? or that they don't want men to have the opportunity to be able to see other WOMEN?...I highlight as I agree that this article is clearly aimed at women dressing 'decently'.

Instead shouldn't children be taught about different cultures and beliefs and be encouraged to respect them and have an open mind toward others.

As residents, we will just take it and generally because we are paid well..

Regardless of the dress-code rules...

When it gets to a point you can't put up with the rules the locals see as important..you would do as others before you and just move on..

in reality it really just doesn't matter...

wish they would make a law about taking a bath...

Abayas make life easier..Had to wear them in Riyadh when off the compound, would say it saves the stares but it doesn't..Shopping yesterday saw a woman in short denim shorts it just makes me smile, people wear what ever they want but you have got to be respectful..

Why only expatriates?...Is the locals over there dressing properly?

This is really funny to see Men in Shorts and woman fully covered, the dress code is for Both genders.

Peace

UAE has woke very late; despite fines, punishments, deportations, nothing worked so a NEW LAW on modest dressing :)

I was at the Marina mall a couple of days ago and saw two guys walking through the mall in bike shorts and tank tops that left NOTHING to the imagination! I'd like to see what would happen if a woman walked around in the same outfit.

As long as the law applies to both sexes and is enforced fairly I welcome it.

If you have been on twitter lately, there has been a concentrated effort by concerned Qatari residents advocating wearing of modest attire in public places. The campaign is being spearheaded by Ms. Najla who also happens to design the flyers. It appeals to man and women alike. Follow them on https://twitter.com/#!/OneOfUs_qa

I agree with you. I recall in Riyadh, a Saudi couple moved into our compound. The guy used to come to the pool dressed in see through Jamas or skimpy shorts, whereas his wife used to be covered from head to toe...

Sure. I'm the one who always says tell us to wear abayas and get it over with. My issue is not with the laws themselves, although I do worry about how they will be enforced (and by whom!) but with the fact that they seem to be targeting just women, when men dress equally as inappropriately.

Shame on you. Jumping to assumptions :O)

I think that this is probably aimed at the tourists. However...

Hypothetical Question: Let's assume that these laws were introduced and some sort of enforcement mechanism implemented.

Would you stay in UAE ?

so funny...

worried about how someone dresses..

but not worried about the prostution that is rampid in the UAE...

What a joke..

I agree although not with this statement:

The law, he said would target expatriates and tourists who violate the traditions, especially with regard to the dress code.

He also uggested that the law also tackle other “unacceptable behaviours” such as kissing in public.

“These behaviour affect our children, who learn from what they are experiencing.”

Kids are more influenced by their favourite pop stars not by someone they see in the street..Tv,internet,youtube even the shops selling all the "normal" clothes these are influences..I have been in the middle east for 5 years and never seen ex pats kissing in the street..They are looking to blame others for changes that are happening in there own society..Kids want to do and dress how ever they like..

Not that I'm aware. But there are old ladies who hide in bushes to catch people making out. So I'm sure they'll start packing tape measures when heading out to get a Fat Burger at the Dubai Mall.

So earlier we wanted a dress code in black and white and now why only WOMEN. And we call everyone else shit stirrer...Duh!!!

Not going to happen. Women will bear the brunt of these new "laws"

You'll see self appointed muttawas going through the malls with tape measures.

How about the men who wear shorts well above the knees NM? Or the one's who wear tank tops and tight tops to show off their muscles. Or the ones who go topless!

By FathimaH• 11 Jun 2012 14:54
FathimaH

Fine..well and good to do away with confusions. Now ladies know what they can and cant wear.

BUT I agree with MM.

" Also, there should be big posters in malls and everywhere showing the rules and how women should dress decently.”

Why only women? Why not the men? Are they allowed to dress as they wish then? Can they wear shorts and what not?

See this is what annoys me about many people. They always act as though it's only women who have been/should be given guidelines as to how to dress.

Among Muslims you get So many men, who whilst strongly support the hijab, casually brush off their own dress code obligations as "sunnah" "not a must" "we are excused cos we don't do it out of pride" "women are different men are different" etc.

And then when it comes to setting laws against exposing, or not exposing, by authorities, the concentration is again on women and not the men. Why?Are men not capable of dressing indecent? Laws should be for all!

By nomerci• 11 Jun 2012 14:54

MM...you mean the thobe with no undies?

Or skin tight pants leaving nothing to the imagination?

Or wearing make up?

I agree Brit, it SHOULD be used for men to, yet here's this lovely quote:

“Dress code brochures should be given out at the airport and when the passport is stamped with the visa. Also, there should be big posters in malls and everywhere showing the rules and how women should dress decently.”

Women women women!!! Why not focus on the men who dress indecently as well!
