who wants to see this site really updated and expanded?

This site is far too slow. It's partly due to the forum architecture. If the administrator really wants to upgrade this site into a full fledged (awesome) forum; and believe me it does have that potential then the more techie people here should, together with the original maker of this site should set up a team......admin, moderator etc. The best (and I can vouch for it) forum software is vBulletin Version 3.5.3, powered by Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. If you want to see how large and complex a site can become, visit www.expat.ru
It has become my number one source of information whilst in Moscow, and it is truly and awesome site.

What do you all think?

Thank you Super, that is one of the most frustrating things i've found too. Nice to know someone else thinks so. :)

I totally agree with Moonbeam. This site although an infinite improvement on what existed before is incredibly difficult to navigate. If it is not in the current listing you lose track of postings completely.

Other forums have email notification and much more detailed summaries

You can also quote posts so people know what specifically you are referring to

Qatari, yes Drupal is not just a bulletin board, but vbulletin or many other (even free forum softwares) offer what Drupal does and more. This site has some of the stuff that other forums do.

The difference is that on Expat.ru for example, you can:

PM users

See New posts - with details to what is being commented on (unlike here)

Display options - sort by, sort order, from date

Pages reload without Error

User CP accepts handles, email buddy lists, tracking

Quicklinks

Calender

Sticky Threads

Email notification

Internal search engine

Posts

Linear, Threaded, Hybrid display views available

Supports BB Code in posts

Supports HTML in post

Smilies

Avatars

Optional WYSIWYG or standard editors for posts and Private Messages

Attachment images

Quick reply box (with optional "forced" click on post to quote)

Preview post option

Post rating

User reputation

Polls

Post Reporting - report posts to moderators

User post count

Admin tools for Posts - edit/delete/move/ etc

Preview safe attachments

and more.

MY POINT IS NOT TO DEBUNK YOUR GOOD WORK. I repeat, my suggestion was only to see if you wanted to improve your web site. The easier the site is, with the least amount of problems; the larger your community will become. And, you won't lose anyone because it's sometimes frustrating to navigate.

In the end, whether or not you decide to upgrade, improve, moderate or whatever, is completely up to you. There are many different solutions other than vbullettin (which I quoted out of experience) which are also free; such as http://www.invisionfree.com/ but have limited bandwitdh.

my 2 cents worth :)

Moonbeam, I think you confuse an inclination to expand the site with your belief that Vbulletin is cooler than Drupal. This site isn't just a bulletin board - we offer blogs, photo galleries, news aggregation, buddylists and syndication.

Any enhancements and suggestions are welcome.

Qatari, I did suggest. I have been an active forum member on the other site for 1 year, and in all that time it was never hard to post, hard to find information in an organised manner.

This site is good, however, my suggestion was to help improve it so that it could handle a larger number of posts, easily searchable and reputation points assigned to determine the validity of the poster.

On the other hand, if you have no inclination to expand your site, no problem; leave it just the way it is.

Regards,

Moonbeam

Feel free to suggest anything...

On the moderation side, usually we don't need to moderate anything since people register before they post - this forces a level of responsibility. So far we are doing fine...

Oh goodness, my intentions are not to debunk anyone, especially not qatari! I think he's done a wonderful job. My suggestion is only to improve. This is qatari's site, so it's his call. Mine was only a suggestion. No offence

Butterfly, on most sites moderators are there to protect the viewers, not censor regular info. Just think at all the kids that have access to sites which should be moderated.

Anyway, like I said, mine was a suggestion. Please let me know if it not okay to do so.

I like this site because there is no Moderator. Please no moderator...

Qatari has done a fantastic job

Hi Super7, I'm in Moscow right now, but as soon as I get to doha, I'm definately going to get back into riding....need to work the flab off, after 8 months of freezing weather! It got to -45C here this winter! I know have a list of farms, only a couple i think actually do riding, but if you love horses, I'll send you the links if you send me your e-mail address.

As for the site, it quite complicated to set up, so it must be a team effort. Plus the software costs something (obviously, nothing is free in the world). But I see immense potential in it for Doha. So if the right group gets together maybe it can happen.

I'll do a little research and see what needs to be done.

Moonbeam do you know anything about riding in Doha? I notice you are into riding from your profile.

Also why don't you do the new site?

Can be quite lucrative if you do it right
