What if there's a war?

I read the news below in today's newspaper and was particularly attracted by this:

“They may be able start one but they cannot end it and it remains in Iran’s hands,” the general said. Read more:

U.S. Navy Announces Iran War Preparations

March 17, 2012 • 3:52AM

Without hardly batting an eyelash, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathon Greenert informed the Senate Armed Services Committee Thursday about what the U.S. Navy is doing to prepare for war against Iran.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Ct.) nonchalantly asked Greenert what the Navy is asking for in the budget "that will specifically increase our capability to defend against any Iranian action" in the Persian Gulf. Greenert said, among other things, that the Navy is moving four minesweeping ships to the Gulf, in addition to the four that are already there, along with four more minesweeping helicopters. Greenert indicated that those minesweeping vessels would be working very closely with similar British minesweepers that are also already there.

A retired Naval officer who blogs under the nom de plume "Galrahn," had this to say on that same day on his blog "Information Dissemination" about Admiral Greenert's revelation: "In other words, the Chief of Naval Operations announced to the Senate Armed Services Committee this morning specific details about preparations for war with Iran, and in response the Senators drooled on themselves in silent capitulation. The only thing missing from that scene from this mornings Twilight Zone moment in the Senate was the CNO knocking on the microphone asking 'is this thing on' for dramatic effect."

Iran is acting like Lawrence of Arabia back in 1920's,

Iran will just talk sh!t, shout, give threats, and in the end will just go and sit on the lap of United States, their role in region is like that Rascal, who give threat to everyone, and having another brother or friends, who come to the same people and collect protection money promising to protect from that rascal!

US/Iran/Israel are doing the same with Arabs, Iran is threatening them and they are paying to States,

Hearing about US/Iran war for more then a decade, but never happened..

BTW Iran can never beat States, they don't have that much capability! their situation won't be different from Iraq & Afghanistan!

Anyone who thinks Iran would even be a contender in a conflict with the US is an idiot. The US would not invade but use airstrikes to destroy Iranian military infrastructure. The US would have air superiority the moment its jets take off and would eliminate Iran's traditional fighting capacity in under two weeks, and that is a stretch. The US would have no reason to put ground forces in Iran.

If Iran hit tankers, world opinion would go decisively against it. The US would then be able to build a coalition against Iran in the region, including KSA and other Gulf countries--who fear Iran much more than the US does (remember all the leaked cables from KSA and the Emirates urging the US to bomb Iran?).

Iran's best best is not to retaliate with force against the tankers but appeal to world opinion and play the sympathy card--something that would go a long way imo.

How can there be heavy casualties on both sides ? The USA, as it did in the Balkans and lately in Libya will use long range misiles and aircraft to destroy and disable the Iranian defences and attack capabilities.

Yes Iran has speed boats and light ships, but they are no match for an Aircraft Carrier with its support group comprising submarines, frigates , destroyers and minehunters. The USA will not risk any soldiers on the ground because the public will not accept it.

The Iranians also have a lot of speedboats so would probably try to attack tankers and offshore platforms and that would be difficult to stop.

However as Britexpat says its all bluff at the moment. If there was a real war the Iranians wouldn't win it. The US military machine would destroy Iranian capability in about 2 months with the whole of the GCC cheering them and providing money. The big hope would be then the Iranian people would rise up and throw those religious dictators out and grab back their country.
