What does Asian mean to you?

Tigasin321
By Tigasin321

Hi everyone. Please excuse my ignorance on this but the term Asian confuses me. When I think of Asian people, I think of Oriental people from China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand etc. I don't think of people from the Middle East or Eastern Turkey as Asian although technically, they are. As far as people from the sub continent are converened, do they think of themselves as Asian? Do Asians have anything at all in common or is just and inadequate term for a huge part of the world and a massive variety of peoples?

Above list of countries are Asian geographically. But when a person is called "Asian" in US, it means they are oriental looking. Which are people from China, Japan, Korea's and other Southeast Asian countries? The term, "Asian" is a political correct replacement word for racist word, "Ch***y". I hope that answers the above questions. And has anybody ever gave thought why people from US are called Americans worldwide, why not people from Canada, Mexico, Brazil or Chile and many more....

Australasia isn't something that is too common...however Oceania is what refers to down under of Aus Vs NZ...

Asians: Well while we do accept the technicality, normally Indians are quite different to in the looks so are referred to as Indians, but when it comes to Far East Asia, China, Korea, Japanese you sometimes cant make out who is who...they are all look alike...so thats why they're referred to as Asians...

When I hear Asian I think either Far East Asia (China, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, etc) and South East Asia (India, Paskistan, Nepal, etc) but I don't consider Middle Easterns as Asian (although geographically they are) but the culture and traditions are very different. Even Middle Easterns are very different among themselves, for example Lebanon is very different from Qatar although they're only about 2400 kms away.

Although one's identity may seem to be a very personal and individual decision, as we shall examine, there can be many historical, socioeconomic, and sociological factors that can directly or indirectly influence this decision. Just as there is a wide range of experiences and circumstances within the Asian population, so too can there be many different, overlapping, and simultaneous forms of ethnic identity among Asian.

For me, Asian are: Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Thai, Pinoy, Cambodian, Laos, Myanmar, Singaporian, Malaysian, Brunei, and Indonesian. The rest I called: Arabian, Indian, of Turkish.

We all as an Asian, have similiar taste in Food, Culture, Dance, Customs and Tradition. Which totally different from the Western culture, food, Customs and Tradition.

In the end, we all answer to the same MArker.

when i was living here asian meant the same to me... chinese, philipino...etc

but when i moved to the UK asians were actually indian, pakistanis, afghanis and all and far eastern ppl were referred to as oriental..

middle easterns are arabs

and so on

i think it does make it easier to distinguish them that way

but hey.. who cares..

i always use the term Asian for philpines, china, Japan, and thailand

but technically Indians, Qatarianr, suadians all are Asians cuz they r all in Asia ... but when u talk about a race or body type Asian is always used for phil. china jap. thailand etc ...

so it depends where do u use it and who is using it too .. it can be both ..

so how r u Richard ..
