Western Educated Arab!! What does it mean?

By nowhereman

I have read and heard this sentence, "Western Educated Arab" a couble of times in the past few days, from people looking for tenants. And was asking myself, what does it mean??
Does it refer to be being good in english, cuz I speak very good english, does that qualify me!
or about having some kind of social rank, does working as a software developer, make for that.
or maybe about having a certain ideas or certain type of character, but we all know that not all "Western Educated Arab" -what ever that is- have the same character or ideas. neither even all the westerners have the same mind set.

So, what does "Western Educated Arab" really refers to?
I have no idea... Any ideas?

Yes, that's exactly my point. it is a vague description.

And Oryx, I so much believe that any one having a place to rent, has the right to choose, who he would feel beter having around. it has nothing to do with descrimination.

I'm Arab, and I started this topic, but I wasn't talking about it, feeling ofended or descriminating, just was trying to point out, how much vague and loose, and not much defining the term "western educated arabs"

But I must say it, after over a year in this country, I find very difficult to find proper accomodation, if you are an Egyptian,

regardless of what type of person you are..

- specially that among the egyptian community, it's hard to be a person, who likes to have his privacy and appreciates having his own space without much intrusions -

Exactly - all the ones that bombed the London Underground were 'Western Educated' - and there are many many Qataris who have been no further than Saudi and would not want to - but their social skills with me - have been faultless. And there are British yobs with their violent lager culture I dont' want anywhere near me... so yes all v. confusing.

Many job ads etc are stupid esp. when it comes to ageism....

but I guess it is the perogative of those who put the adverts.

I didn't want to live with an arab male - for personal reasons i did not want to disclose publicly.... and I just wanted to save folk time.

I didnt' want to live with an indian family either!

And I wouldnt' want to live with a Canadian unless it is gypsy because she is the exception that proves my rule..

IT is your house, amd you definetly have the choice, but you just have to be careful of how you word it.

Example: You can take out an add in the paper saying you are offering $50 to anyone who will mow your lawn. Its a big lawn, so make sure you are up for it if you wish to apply.

OR

Your add can say you are offering $50 for anyone who will mow your large lawn....old people and fat people don't bother applying.

LOL I know its extreme, but its just to illustrate a point.

In this case, I don't think Western Educated Arab is derogatory....its just vague. I mean I personally know Western Educated Arabs that run the gamut from Religious zealots to wild hedonists!

Stay safe all.

Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?

Hi butterfly....:)

my whole point being Latino educated or where ever educated teaches new social skills that an employer may be looking for.

If an employer needed someone to deal with Latino clients and was also English I thus have the credentials.

It is not something to get all ariated about and scream racism.

The advertiser (rightly or wrongly) has the criteria in mind... the more precise the advert - then best for all us so we don't waste our time.

If a Latino wanted a Latino housemate I would consider myself eligible to apply because I am Latino educated and thus versed in the social values they wish to live by.

I put up a house advert once and got some REAL hate mail because i didn't want any arab males, indian families etc... I only wanted a western female... my perogative my house I know what I want to live with and dont' want to feel bad about whats in my fridge etc

I hadn't realised you went to Uni in Mexico and thus were 'educated' there. Apologies, I had thought you went there to teach AFTER Uni.

Absolutely nothing! lol The movie was really good. But we just realized that it was the same old boring face of Denzel as in every movie time after time.

However just for argument sake, this movie has to do a lot with Arabs in the West. One reason would be that after Malcom X seperated from the false "nation of Islam" before his assasination, many of his freinds and fans also turned to the Islam that originated 1400 years ago in the Arabian land, Mecca. As we know that the Muslims also carried arabian culture and traditions as it spread around the world to a certain extent. This movie was a story of a black american Gangster who was going through an unbelievable economical, social and cultural change, but the director managed to forget how Islam and the Arabian culture brought in by the Muslims in Los Angeles changed the life of many gangsters in U.S. You can read chapter 7 of this book "the autobiography of an L.A Gang member" for more intresting stuff.

I went to universtiy there for some time both as an undergraduate and post graduate. I was in Latin America for a total of 8 years.

This makes me 'Latin American Educated' - doesn't it? I was formally educated there for a period of time and got the necessary certs.

I was always the only non-Latino in the class.

yea, no offence to both, but I feel like I'm living in India or Philipine, I've been looking for a place to rent for a month now, almost all adds for Indian or Phillipino only.

haha, and when I found a couble of adds that might suit me, and were not were not Indian or Phillipino only, it was for Western Educated Arabs :) -Which I still think a definition that don't define much, in terms of personality or mind set-

So I can pretty say I'm Under Siege...

I didn't understand it either - it was a bit too BBC Radio 4 even for me! ! :P

A "Western Educated Arab" is known as a "Fresh off the Boat" Arab in the US, which is different from a 1st or 2nd generation Arab that grew up in the US.

Only people that came to the West in their adulthood, and like to think that they are somehow more "refined" than your typical Arab would ever refer to himself as as a "Western Educated Arab".

Sounds to me like he has an inferiority complex, and is trying to assert his class status in a status obcessed country like Qatar. I would personally steer clear of such an individual, and hang out with regular Arabs who are comfortable with their identity.

Its about the set of social skills you pocess.

I am actually a Latin American educated Westerner.

So I have the social skills and experience to interact with and know about Latinos.

I know the cultural values, icons, social expectations etc.

Here are some things I know about.... that maybe not many Westerners do:

frijoles

cochinita pibil

Virgin de Guadalupe

Cantinflas

Charros

Granizado de Tuna

El grito de independencia

Chac Mool

Dia de Muertos

Cenotes

It is part of my life experience.

Well, I kinda agree with you Ragnarock, it's about the value system, cuz I don't think studying in the west for a couble of years, means any thing, or gives any significant indication about the person, different Arabs cud study in the west, and still have completely different mind sets, and belong to different value systems.

buttercupryle, if you're asking me, if I'm members in Filipno expatriatesgroup, No, I'm from Egypt.

I think those looking for "Western educated Arab", could have just said what they want exactly in a person. cuz really this defintion, doesn't define much...

Some one who looks at the world in a western perspective. Massari is an extremely westernized Arab. Any sort of extremism is a porblem. There are western Arabs who do not find it necessary to wear designer clothes and sing pop songs and attract all the girls with thier expensive cars.

For example, Tariq Ramadhan is a prominent western arab figure. If you don't know him , you can look him up on youtube. His last book is amazing.

For instance are you western Educated if you grew up in the middle east and did all of your living and studying there, then just went abroad for a few years and got a university degree from the west?

Surely that's not the same as someone whos family imigrated abroad when they were 6 and spent almost all their life in the west!

My guess is that in the case of adds like this, they are looking for someone western minded (with the associated value systems of the west) whilst trying to remain politically correct....but who knows for certain what they mean.

Stay safe all.

Literally this may mean Arabs who grew up and studied in Western countries.

or may mean Westernized Arabs like Massari.
