A Pakistani woman who was set on fire for refusing a marriage proposal has died of her injuries.

Maria Sadaqat, a schoolteacher in her early 20s, was attacked in her home by a group of men on Sunday and died in hospital in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Her family say she had turned down a marriage proposal from the son of the owner of a school she had taught at.

Campaigners say attacks against women who refuse marriage proposals are common in Pakistan.

Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif launched an immediate investigation into the killing, which will report in two days.

Maria's father has said the school owner was one of the men who attacked his daughter. Police told the BBC that the men beat her and doused her in petrol before setting her alight near the hill resort of Murree, not far from the capital.

Brit, people in the judicial system and law enforcing agencies are also part of the same culture. Until and unless our mindsets change, we shouldn't expect anything better.

Mufti:Misogyny is not a part of any culture but exists in individuals. You can find misogynists everywhere they are not limited to any particular region.

I agree with britexpat that if the judicial system and law were properly enforced the perpetrators wouldn't have been so bold.

Mufti: I agree.. However, if the judicial system and the law were strong enough and these guys knew the consequences, then they would not be so bold ..

Brit: It isn't really about lawlessness. Misogynistic attitudes are cultural.

WT: This is not about property or chattel.. This is about respect for human life and civilised behaviour...

The simple fact here is that lawlessness breeds such actions...

Some 12,000 years ago people settled and began claiming property. That's when humanity left the planet. As long as people own things there will be other people who want to take these things. There can be no peace as long as people own things. By the way, 'private' comes from the Latin word 'privare' which means to 'steal'.

Umer (raliyallahu anhu), during his ruling, During a horse race in Egypt, a black persons son came first beating the rulers (Governors) son of Egypt at that time.

The Victim (The father of black person came to Saudi Arabia and lodged a complaint to Umer (raliallahu anhu), The ruler for all Islamic states.

Umer (Raliallahu Anhu) said, we have our parliament gathering shortly, and all governors are coming. So asked him to wait till then.

When all the governors from different parts such, Syria, Yemen, Egypt etc., came to the meeting.

He called upon the governor of Egypt and asked Him to lash by the black person. He allowed him to lash how much ever he need’s but the black man went away lashing one time.

This is justice.

Now: If two original state owner’s (Brothers) are cannot come in terms, The Agent has a part to play. Let me go with the agent for some time as I am a peace believer till the owners wake.

Btw: Brity, I respect your disagreement as those leaders need more thought’s in to their affairs.

One person's or a groups actions do not defame the entire community. There are rotten eggs in all communities.

The women are the victims in the sub continent. In India (Delhi and Mumbai), rape is rampant, and the govt is baffled on how to tackle it. On the other side, in Pakistan and Bangladesh crime against women like acid and fire burning are coming out. Theses countries have weak legal systems which is why such crimes get away without exemplary punishment.

The core reason is that these countries are coming out from the centuries old "Agricultural Slavery" where women had little rights.

Male dominance is yet another factor, that treats the women as an inferior class.

Education and strong legal system can change this phenomena.

The "particular community" defames itself by their actions, Mufti.

mohamed800: I would have to disagree with your logic...

The key thing is that there are many many educated people in teh sub continent.. We as humans know what is right and wrong...

The simple fact is that progressive governments and religious leaders have turned a blind eye to such goings on and allowed them to continue..

They haven't taken action against these criminals and have a largely ignored teh problem because it does not affect them...

Unfortunately the skilled and educated people from the Subcontinent countries were already shifted to developed countries for their benefits and to fulfill the needs of developed countries.

Unfortunately the situation prevail bad in back home due to the lack of fundamental education & economy.

It’s time to work towards these areas for the migrants who migrated to other countries. Otherwise the generation will forget where they originally came from.

Giving proper education about the life and the purpose of marriage, child development etc., will lead to a better society.

Since the migrants to the western countries play tremendous part to uplift the western countries, they need to have a look at the countries where they came from as well.

We know those migrants have the option of seeing the picture clearly rather people who living within the situation. May be for them it’s part and parcel of life. But for the BBC to report, what an important situation it is.

So it’s better late than never to take the news positively and work towards the same community to uplift the life style. I hope the communal groups and well wishes will come front to solve this kind of situation and uplift the community.
