Washing your hair in the water? Some are loosing hair!!

jbaby675
By jbaby675

OK-- I am here in Qatar and have been for 2 weeks. Everything is ok-- had one slight incedent (I know it's safe but ladies still keep your eyes open). But for the most part everything is cool--

My question is about my hair and the water. I've been warned that the water may make me lose some hair. I may need to rinse with a bottled water like Evian to make sure I am not. Is this totally true? If so why and how can you avoid it? I have a lot of hair and Evian is expensive. I've been cleaning my scalp and hair with witch hazel and sea breeze (I am running out and need more) and you must wash your hair here probably more than other places (heat and dust). can someone clarify this with me?

OH-- I am willing to teach African dance if anyone is interested--

Well all of the family have a full head of hair.

So possibly it could be

1. hormones after a certain age

2. stress certainly

3. desalinated water

4. several shampoo changes

5. medication side effects

So perhaps

i. going to a nutritionist

ii. yoga.. the serious type

iii.clear the clutter off from anything that gets you

stressed

iv. drinking water.. dehydration means a trip to the Dr.

v. healthy eating as opposed to dieting..or jumping onto a vegan diet

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

use coconut oil daily and massage it on your hair and scalp... massage slowly daily for blood circulation and if you are using shampoo ..make sure to wash well as the deposit on scalp leads to hair loss.. Also it is good to have body massage once in a while for those with dry skin...

And the important thing is to drink a lot of water

The water here is jars her on the hair. But if you take extra care of your hair you can prevent breakage and hair loss.

Make sure you use conditioner on your hair every time you wash. Leave it on for like 5 minutes then rinse it out. Also try and use a sulfate free shampoo. Shampoos with sulfates can be a little harsh on your hair especially if it is dry.

Also if you like using the hair dryer like me purchase a heat protection serum or spray before using heat on your hair. Or just put a little oil on damp hair before blow drying it.

Guys, chlorine is being used during the desalination process, so yes... this may cause some hair loss, of course depending on your Ph.

Personally, never had a problem but my wife and daughter ARE! There is some treatment that you can buy on the local market that is called "Permea Plus" they have some tablets (one a day) the shampoo and a special oil. It's pricy but very effective.

If you want to read more on the subject, go to: http://www.desalinatedwater.info/

Install a water filter - many people find this eliminates hair loss due to the desalinated water.

To whoever mentioned the use of lead pipes - highly doubtful any are used in Qatar (a) at the time lead was used most often, there were very few building that used piped in water (b) if you look at construction today (and over the past 20 years) they use PVC as in much of the rest of the world.

This is true, I was sceptical until I went to the hair dressers and she basically told me that the chemicals that they use to de-salinate and treat the water here (and that is what it is) are quite strong. These chemicals  bond with the roots of your hair folicles causing them to weaken. In time your hair will drop out and growing your hair back takes time, if at all.

I have had significant hair loss in the last 18 months which I never used to have in the UK. I was basically pulling clumps out of my hair in the shower. I initially put it down to the fact that I had  a baby last year and then I was breast feeding but I stopped doing this some time ago and I realised the hair loss was continuing. Luckily, I still have a good head of hair but the hair dresser recommended just rinsing your hair with bottled water (does not have to be Evian, can use the cheap local brand).

Hopefully this will help you guys out there!!!

only Evian? that's ridiculous... normal tap water will do, just dont use hot water when washing your hair as it also causes hair loss/fall...

has been complaning about losing her hair since coming here 4.5 years ago ( me too but then I'm a bloke so I guess for me it's part of getting older). So, while she is in UK for the summer we have installed water softener for bathing/hair washing and filter for drinking. Let's see when she returns. BTW the bottled water - including Evian- still has a lot of chloride content.

normally hair-loss causes by inside not outside reasons- to be more clear, stress, anger, insomnia etc will cause hair loss rather than shampoo, water...

just relax and keep balanced diet.

yeah i heard desalinated water cuase real problem for hair. make it break off cos it damages the hair and makes it brittle. i started taking permea plus tbalets 1 year ago and that really helped make my hair strong but i read now that permea plus making a new shampoo to stop the water problem. not yet ready in doha but you can get it in dubai.

I experienced this when i first came to Q and when i saw the Dr's about it they said that a lot of people experience that when they come here. ive travelled extensively to the middle east prior to relocating here and everytime i visit the ME the same thing happens. i guess some of us are just unlucky. I started taking hair vitamins from the chemist and this helped and everythings back to normal.  Actually the water here has also dried out my hair but i use almond oil after showers and find this helps...

you feel your loosing your hair i feel that too i think its because of the hardness in the water apart from loosing hair it makes them frizzy too so i guess that we need to take good care of our hair to keep them healthy like using good hair oil, shampoo & conditioner etc.....

After 17 years of using Doha tap water, I don't see any major problems but then I don't have any other experience to fall back on.

You may find hair loss as a result of your hair getting used to water that is a bit different from where you lived prior to. Give it some time and do a scalp and hair oil treatment now and then to maybe help with the transition. You can use Vatika which is available in all supermarkets. Stinks but try it out keeping in for a few hours. Place a cap over to keep the heat in.

yes that is true information,i have the same experience, the tap water in Qatar have a very high  chlorine, which the company adds to disinfect the water, "which is good thing "but unfortunately this hearts the eyes and the hair, but it's good for the teeth” they become more white" :)I think you can reduce the chlorine by boiling the water for some time and let it cool down then you can use it,

I have lived in different countries and every time I move people said that the water is bad and make you lose your hair, Water in USA to much chlorine, in India to dirty, etc.... I am sure that is NOT true I have been living for about a year and a half and my hair and everyone I know is fine.

I noticed an increase of hair loss when I first moved here for about a month and a bit, now I'm barely loosing hair at all. I don't think it has anything to do with the water, I think it has to do with adjusting to the heat. Animals shed when it gets really warm, why wouldn't humans? ;)

Whatever the reason it should stop fairly soon with not to much detriment to your hair.

I been in Doha for 30 days and i am lossing hair too, i am worry cause i find my hair everywhere in my house, i am drinking water from the bottle, good diet and not stress at all, i hope this stop soon, one good thing ... i use to have curly hair in Ecuador and now is straight.

Another reason would be that there are still lead pipelines in use for the water. So it might be (I really don't want to scare you off here) that you suffer from a minor lead poisoning. Loosing hair is one of the first indications of lead poisining. Just an idea... I hope you're not drinking tap water.... Check for that if you are not sure.

I agree it is probably all the other factors such as stress and change in diet that might be causing possible hairloss. If you are concerned about the water improve you hair care regime and use a good shampoo and hair conditioner and add the occasional hot oil or deep conditioning treatment to your regime.

YES. Tap water in Doha is like washing your hair in sea water. It will fall a lot, it will be very very very dry and brittle. I used to cover my hair with coconut oil and err...eggs and beer.

It happened to me when I arrived here that I lost hair, then I have been suggested to rinse with bottled water. But after a while i stopped. Now seems my hair stopped losing, so maybe it was just at beginning when I changed from soft water to de-salinated water or maybe I was under stress.

I've heard that before. Because of the desalination I guess..

But we are used to it.I dunno.. have you noticed you are loosing hair? I don't really know what to do if that's the case but If I were you I’d take vitamins or eat whatever is good for the hair :-)

BTW, When abroad I noticed that hair gets better. So I guess this theory is right.

Never heard that before. We were there 17 years and still have lots of hair even though we used tap water for showers and hairwashing twice a day.

The water comes from the de-salination plant and the only impurities are what is picked up from the piping system.
