truthfulness

I just watched part of some game show on TV and thought the result would be a good lesson and conversation subject.

The show is about the host asking the candidate questions. The candidate must answer true or false. The candidate is hooked up to some lie detector to check if they are speaking the truth or not. Every time the person answers the question he/she goes a step further. Of course they win money....I do not know the name of the show, but am sure most of you know what I am talking about.
Anyway......
There was this girl on just now and she answered some pretty difficult questions and hard to answer. All along your family, husband, wife are there and hear your answers.
One question, asked by her ex-boyfriend, was if she would rather be married to him rather to her husband (who was sitting in the audience and listening to this) She answered in favor of the ex.
An other question was if she had ever had sex outside the marriage. Her answer was yes.
So I guess that is the end of the marriage, cos I do not think any person will take this from their spouse and that on TV in front of I dont know how many people.

During the show they keep on asking if the candidate wants to go on. If they pull out the keep the money earned uptill that point.
If they give a untruthful answer they will risk to lose everything.

So now I will get to the point I am trying to make....
This girl answered all the questions up to now correctly, regardless what it would mean to her marriage.
Then they ask if she thinks she is a good person. She answers yes. But the lie detector says it is a false answer.

This shows, that it is easier to be truthful about feelings you have for others than being truthful with your self.

Do you think this is the case for everybody. Are so many people hiding the truth from themselves? What about you?
I would like to hear your answers.

No stupid answers please, nor jokes. This is a serious discussion only.

She gambled with her marriage by being truthful

But then she failed answering this last question which, in my mind was easy to answer and, most people expected her to answer that she did not think highly of her self, specially after what she just revealed about her self. Then she lost everything.

because this is a tv show, my bet is that it was a tricky question that would get a false lie. There is no point in lying if you have already admitted everything else!

Exactly my point. She was so truthful about all the other questions which would in my eyes would be a reasonable reason to lie about. But then this question about self truth she flunked. This leads you question if the show is doctored.Or is it so hard to be truthful with one self.

Well maybe sahe did not know if she thought she was a good person or not. It seems odd how she could be honest with all the other questions and then lie about the last one. If she had addmitted all the other horrible things why would she lie about that last?

It does present an interesting question. Did the show doctor the last answer? Or could she really not admit it? Why lie at the very last question? Could she really not admit the truth about herself?

Probably because we try so hard to live up to the expectations of those around us? Especially those closest and dearest to us.

I know I would never go on TV for any of these kind of shows and do not understand people who do it. But that is not the point I was trying to make. My point was not really to discuss the merits of the show and if we like them or not. My point was to talk about truthfulness with yourself.

Why is it so hard to be truthful with yourself?

Understood,.. but still U go on knowing that U will be asked questions like that? Sorry, but in my books if you do so willingly knowing that U'll hurt and destroy it's nothing but cheap thrills and publicity.

This is not at all like Jerry Springer. There it is just cheap stuff looking for sensation. This is a different level.

If you saw this show, then you must see what I meant about losing it all for being honest with your self. This meant to me that honesty with your self seems to be more of a problem for people than you think. Maybe I am different, cos I am too honest with my self. Maybe it is because my faith teaches me that God know everything and this taught me to be honest throughout.

I watched this tonight as well. They were clever with this last question, she lost everything...

I agree Alexa, they must be stupid to think they will win all this money without risking anything..

ALexa I have a feeling they find people who are willing to do almost anything for money. Sad, but true.

Also, I bet these people dont know exactly what they are getting into when they go on these shows

I have also seen this show. The one I saw, they asked the guy if he had lied about having an STD test, He said yes, he did lie and had told his current partner he had one when he had not. The camera cut to his finace sitting in the audience with this look of terror on her face..I mean she was just stricken.

This man was so awful, how do you lie about that kind of thing and then admit it on television?
