Transit passenger arrested in Abu Dhabi for unpaid UAE bank dues

Good move by the authorities.  A warning to others.

The passenger, Abdul Raheem, 40, earlier worked in the UAE and left the country without allegedly clearing his dues.

Raheem, an Indian newspaper delivery driver in Saudi Arabia, was on his annual vacation from Jeddah to the Nedumbassery International Airport, Kerala, on September 1, 2015, when he was detained at the Abu Dhabi airport by the police.

Raheem has already spent more than two weeks in the UAE and is out on bail after pledging his passport.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7 he says: “I was travelling on an Etihad Airways flight from Jeddah to Kochi on September 1, 2015.

“When the plane reached Abu Dhabi, a CID officer came to the aircraft, called out my name inside the plane and took me out.

“He told me I have unpaid loans and credit cards and that I cannot leave without clearing the dues.”

He says that now he realises that it was a mistake to leave the UAE without clearing the dues.

Raheem has approached the legal cell of the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) and his brother who works in Al Ain for help.

According to an Indian social worker with the KMCC, the legal cell has begun receiving such cases, where transit passengers with pending loans or credit card payments to UAE banks, have been held up here.

“Many people think it is easy to take loans and credit cards and leave the country without clearing the dues. “They are taking a big risk. In this case, the victim is stranded here for 16 days and he has no means to make the payment.

“It is better to clear your dues and then leave the country,” said Advocate Sajid Aboobaker of  Hani Al Jasmi Advocates, handling the Abdul Raheem case.

“Any blacklisted person for loans or credit card default  can be detained even after clearing immigration and boarding the plane.”

Same way if you give away one million Rupees to a middle income working fellow he will donate 25 % on the first day, 25 % will go to the celebrations / his work days loss , 25 % for the gifts to the married sisters of his father , 20 % for repaying a portion of his debt ....... he may be left with only 50,000 Rs. within three months plus his wife will fight with him for being so kind suddenly . Now compare it with a rich businessman ...... if he finds same amount of money ......... even his wife & girlfriends won't know about that ....... he will go the bar & drink with a starnger & come back after spending only 5,000 Rs ... saving a neat 9,95,000 Rs. ............ ............ I mean to say give money to somebody after through check if he is able to handle it & use properly ............ Bankers fail miserably in it ...........

The most revered name in private equity, and for many an extension of American foreign policy, the Carlyle Group, admitted that one of its funds could not repay its debt. For every $1 of equity, the $22bn Carlyle Capital Corporation fund was leveraged with $32 of loans. In other words, it toppled over under the weight of unsustainable debt.

Lehman Brothers went bankrupt. Merrill Lynch, AIG, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, HBOS, Royal Bank of Scotland, Bradford & Bingley, Fortis, Hypo and Alliance & Leicester all came within a whisker of doing so and had to be rescued.

Western leaders, who for years boasted about the self-evident benefits of light-touch regulation, had to sink trillions of dollars to prevent the world bank system collapsing.

MM: Buddy you are making no sense i'm sorry...banks are predatory sharks i agree, but the guy is an adult, sane and had the choice to say no to the loan offer...i'm presuming you're muslim and our religion has spoken in depth about the evils of debt. Did you know that a dead muslim's reckoning is kept pending until his debts are cleared? One should always notify friends or family so they can clear your debt in case you die in a state of being in debt. Even religion aside, its a simple concept, do not spend what you do not have. People who deliberately run from a country like this are criminals in any law. Nothing you say can justify it and the guy is reaping what he sowed, sorry.

He could have make arrangement to pay back the money since he has started working in another country, that shows he deliberately abscond with bank loan. As many that still plan to do the same if the authority did not get you, your conscience will make you restless till you pay back with double interest.
