Frederiek Nolf
PROMISING Belgian cyclist Frederiek Nolf was found dead in his hotel room in Doha yesterday morning, casting a shadow of gloom over the Tour of Qatar.
Nolf, 21, who rides for Team Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator, had been “cracking jokes” at dinner on Wednesday night before retiring to his room at the Ritz Carlton with his teammate Kristof Goddaert.
A file picture taken on June 10, 2007 shows Belgian cyclist Frederiek Nolf crossing the finish line to win the GP Memorial Van Coningsloo race in Rijmenam, Belgium. Nolf, who was to celebrate his 22nd birthday on February 10, was found dead in his hotel room in Doha yesterday morning
However, when his team director Jean-Pierre Heynderrieckx went to their room yesterday morning to wake them up for the fifth stage of the Tour of Qatar, Nolf failed to respond. He had apparently died in his sleep although the exact cause would be known only after an autopsy.
