A Time Before Family Day

By zayd

This is a question for the people who've been here for some time now. What was it like before the "family day" policy was put in place? I ask because i believe that nothing comes into existence (especially social rules) without a good reason...and for something so unpleasant to be implemented then i'm guessing the reality that came before it must have been even worse...

So tell me, what was it like before family day? I really hope some qataris answer this question, especially bleu...i always find sense in his comments.

Please nobody turn this into a bashing thread, just go bash that guy that opened the indian thread or gypsy for not conforming or something :D

Family Day started when these big big hypermarkets cameup. Before there were only shops and no family day.

All the days were a normal day for a normal human being....:(

btw, family day has been around since before I came in some malls. Like Gypsy, I remember Landmark always used to enforce it properly, but they don't seem to any more.

I never have and never will understand why people repeatedly go to the malls during peak times, week in, week out, as if it's some form of entertainment. There's gotta be better things to do with your free time, even in Qatar!

so nobody other than FS and tallg were here before the family day rule was applied?

I had the same thing happen to me at Landmark way back in 2005 or 2006. I turned up one Thursday evening to get some groceries and was turned back because it was family day.

If anything, the family day rules have weakened over time, not strengthened.

LOL. Sure! But I live pretty far away from Landmark now.

Actually when I first came here Family Day at LandMark WAS instituted properly. I remember my brother, about a week after arriving, went over to Landmark on a Friday and he was told it was family day and he wasn't allowed in, he had to call me to come over and join him.

Ahhhh those were the days.

They prefer the westerners staring at them rather than Nepalis, Indians or Other Brown skins like us...

Racism at it's peak...

It's not because things are difficult that we don't dare, it's because we don't dare that makes things difficult!

oh alright then...well did their presence just aggravate everyone or did it deter actual shoppers from going out to the malls as well?

By tallg• 22 Apr 2009 11:49
tallg

No zayd - it wasn't quite that bad!!! It was just the sheer number of men congregating together, and the manner in which the stared at everyone.

by the way I don't see any major difference, the purpose of 'Family day' was introdued to peace of mind shopping day for families.

But in reality on the 'family day' you will see lots of 'White Colar Bachelors' romaing aroung in the malls following young girls/ sending bluetooth messages or staring women.

Regardless nationality they should not allow 'Bachelors' white or black or brown ...

I have stopped going to malls or souq during weekends, I prefer to take my family during week days because it is less crowded and easy to find parking also the streets are empty :-)

I am against this policy. For me the family day is from Sunday to Wednesday ;-)

tallg, thanks for the input...so what other kind of behavior was there? people sprawled accross the floor, crowding the malls pointlessly, did any fights ever break out? i'm just trying to picture what it was like

t_coffee_or_me...i wasn't calling anyone a dick...i was saying that if someone comes into this thread and tries to turn it into a bashing thread then he would be acting like a dick. I assure you that i hold speed in high regards as i have never found him to act in any dick-like way :)

Sorry zayd, I realise now that I didn't answer your question fully.

Like FS said, people felt uneasy about the large groups of men who were gathering in the malls. There was a tendency for these men to stare at everyone intently, which is quite rude in a country with a conservative culture like Qatar. And unfortunately a minority took things too far and started as FS described, which is probably what tipped the balance.

excellent! so tell me, as a female going to a mall on friday how would you feel? and can you remember when the family day policy was implemented?

All these people working in the construction site was inside city centre on weekends to get some cool air and some good show (free of cost) and intentional bumping into females..which made all the families and so called Executive bachelors uneasy.. That’s why Family day was implemented….

(Felt like answering for a school exam with no clue about the correct answer…looool)

Is that what you were looking for Zayd?

By zayd• 22 Apr 2009 11:08

there's plenty that's wrong with family day, i don't argue with that...

but what was it like before? i wanna know what circumstances existed to bring this notion into life.

what name bashing? are you talking about the last sentence? that's only a joke...

well in case people don't get it what i meant was this: if you want to turn this into qatari bashing or any bashing of any sort then i can't do anything to stop you, but you're being a d!ck so please don't start bashing. i really just want some honest answers to my question from a bunch of different people with different points of view, that's all.

There is sound reasoning behind family day, but unfortunately the implementation is wrong since they only target single men from certain races. If they denied entry to ALL single men I wouldn't have a problem with it.
