Teacher punishes schoolboys with lighter fire

An Asian female teacher used a lighter to punish school boys by burning their hands and face, prompting education authorities to immediately sack her.

Police arrested the teacher after parents reported that she used the lighter fire on their hands and faces, which carried burn marks.

The students’ families in the Saudi capital Riyadh reported the unnamed teacher after noticing such marks on their faces and hands.

“School boys told their parents that the teacher burned them with a lighter as a punishment in class,” Sada newspaper said.

Apart from sheer stupidity , it highlights the need for recruiting “qualified” persons to teach our kids.. All too often schools go for the cheapest option

D.E.D.I.C.A.T.I.O.N. for what? - Although "the teacher" is a highly valued profession in the Islamic teachings, in the Islamic society of Qatar it is not. "So, you are a teacher? Well, then with your 12,000 Riyals or so you live BELOW the (relative) poverty line of us citizens," says the Qatari student. "You are nothing. Dedication, for what?

And if I teach at a university level, I couldn't care less if my students get it or not. It's their responsibility. I only offer them the subject. They are supposed to discover it by themselves!

"The real value of a good teacher comes across when having to deal with students who are not very good." - It depends on the age of the students, brit. I don't see any sense in teaching a 17-year-old who doesn't want to learn. His parents have missed to teach him already and a teacher does NOT have to replace the parents! In that case, where the rest of a class is willing to learn, a teacher cannot and should not sacrifice the progress of the class for the sake of one idiot!

//The money-making aspect has driven out the dedication aspect. That was not the way some decades back.//

This is what i was stressing in my earlier post. however you choose to criticize only for the criticism. No highly qualified(in terms of education and teaching skills) professional will work for peanuts . It is all about schools making maximum profits while delivering little.

Brit: There is something I missed stressing in my earlier post: Teaching demands "D-e-d-i-c-a-t-i-o-n." However, the current situation has turned this noble profession into a commercial thing where demand for income overrides the desire to teach. The money-making aspect has driven out the dedication aspect. That was not the way some decades back.

acchabaccha: I agree with you to a point.. Modern teaching methods involve many aspects - not just degree.

I always urge people to read the following article :

Sometimes students aren't "good" students either.

High salaries and qualifications are no yardsticks for a proper judgement of people who can teach. I have come across many highly paid and qualified people in the teaching profession who are simply not good teachers. While they have good knowledge of their subject, they simply lack the quality to deliver, Certain natural qualities such as patience, a good understanding of weakness areas in students and the ability to rectify them, a good speaking power backed by a cool temperament are more essential to teaching than perks and degrees.

What else shall you expect by hiring unqualified and low paid teachers.

The teacher should not just be sacked but punished for such brutality. The most important qualities required to be a teacher are patience and cool temperament. Degrees, qualifications and experience are secondary.
