Taxis in Qatar

I ride taxi everyday when going home from work and it's really good news when more taxis are on road. But what I found out from riding taxi everyday is that some taxi meters run faster than others.

Usually, it only cost me around 8 to 9 QR only from my work place to my home but some taxis cost me 12 QR.

From bin Mahmoud to City Center cost me usually around 12 to 14 QR depending on traffic but recently one taxi charged me 27QR (taxi was using taxi meter) which is beyond the normal rate.

Recently, more taxis are charging on a fixed rate (they don't want to use their meter) and some taxi meters move faster than usual.

I hope there is a regulation from the government to prevent these taxi drivers on deceiving their passengers.

Hey even I have experienced the same. I travel by karwa taxis everyday and somedays the meter is really high compared to the normal.

The 1 and 0 outside n inside doha makes snese to me. I guess they r unknowingly cheating us.

If you are travelling outside Doha the charge will be high, they can change the speed of meter. i think its near to the amount showing there is 1 or 0...if 1 it is inside doha, and 0 it is outside doha(am not much sure about 1 and 0)..some drivers may change to cost you high money...

I do not use the taxi much, but when i lately used their service. I am told the minimum rate is Qr.10.00 for a min distance, so even if the distance travel on the meter shows Qr. 6 or 8, they will charge you Qr.10.00

It's illegal for Karwa to not use their meter, but that doesn't mean much.

And after seeing the legal process play out at Villagio, do you honestly think that you'll be covered by insurance if you were in an accident with a Karwa driver?

Judging by the standard of the typical Karwa driver, being in an accident with them is almost inevitable.

Fubar,

it is illegal to use a non licensend "driving" service.

Also looking into the fatalities rate in Qatar, do you really want to drive with "someone" who might is not insured?? seriously?

Karwa and the new Al Million have their rates posted - it's supposed to be a certain amount per km, and not based on time - so if it's running faster, would it not be the odometer that's not correct?

Why do people still use Karwa?

Save yourself the stress and hassle, and find one of the many drivers advertising here on QL in the classifieds.

Chances are it will cost the same as the overpriced Karwa, but at least the driver will be pleasant.

I have printed out the above Mowasalat Sticker.

Everytime the driver insist not to drive per meter, i let them do and when he is demanding money i hand him out the sticker copy. The only way this thiefts will learn, they not only cheating the clients, they also cheating their employees. If one of the drivers is trying to get his money via violence, i just call the police. just make picture from the meter not in service and thats the needed evidence.

i have enough of this guys, i actually use a limosine service regularly and this company has fixed rates.
