DOHA 2016 Celebrating Change
lol you don't understand what I'm saying. If the athletes village remains empty and unused (which I hope will change), who cares if it brings us better rights and a more developed country ?
I for one can't wait for more buildings and apartments to come along. Hope the rent will go down :D
__________________________
Have you seen the deserted athletes village. its been almost a year since the athletes left and it is still empty.
Let us all support the Olympics so that the Govt builds some more athletes villages to desert them after the players have left.
Who knows maybe the Govt is kind enough to rent out those apartments to the expats.
Now I firmly believe that there are somethings that can only be learnt the hard way (EXPERIENCE)
Good day
@hummer, of course everything I say is my opinion :S Can someone speak on behalf of someone else opinion wise? :S.... For me, it's sad to see people using drugs, for drug dealers, they're happy... it's one of those things that's too obvious to talk about IMO
@Knox, You have to admit that the Asian games did bring great change. Greater than there ever has been. Yes it was not perfect, but Qatar has never done anything at such a scale.
The Olympics will be under the world's eye, so I hope that my government will be smart enough to make sure that we are shown in good light.
If we win the olympics, it's 8 years away, you bring up alot of points, but that supports why I want us to win. To bring ALL these changes.
Common now, politically, the country isn't going to bid on something and then act naive. Qatar has a surplus of international revenue. It's a nation which HAS to spend it's money legally to give back to the global economy. If the olympics ends up giving us empty stadiums that wont be used 20 years from now, I say it's a small price to pay for a better life.
But I'm confused with something, when I brought my N95 over to Doha, I was amazed that alot of the areas were mapped. Even the roads to my home. I was able to use the Navigation built in to find tiny shops, atms, malls, restaurants, hotels etc... There is a new system being launched for the middle east called Galileo (spelling?) which will be very specific.
You asked what Qatar acheived from the Asian games, and I believe that it gained experience, knowledge and showed the flaws that they needed to correct in the future :)
Please don't think that I am here to argue, I just want to show another side of the coin. Maybe I'm a positive person. But I truely believe that this could bring a world of change for us.
At the end of the day, even if Qatar didn't win the bid. I STILL hope that the change comes :) For now, we can't kick out the closed minded people, but we can force them to change.

You did raise some interesting points
1) Tourism
2) Internationalism
3) Building infrastructure
4) Society change (to please public)
5) More businesses (more competition, lower prices)
6) expansion of region
the list is endless.
For a minute I agree with you but did the Asian Games bring all the pre-Games promises and the much hyped benefits. You and I know that all those promises failed to materialise so durint the Olympics toursits and the fans will be coming to Qatar but seriously the question is will they keep on coming after the games to look at the deserted stadiums
Talking about stadiums you should go to Greece and see the condition of the stadiums there. Remeber that Greece has much larger population than Qatar and Football is big business in Europe. You cannot compare the revenues generated by football in europe and in the middle east.
Qatar is not even ready to grant the people living in Qatar some basic human rights so how do the human rights restrictions look in the INTERNATIONAL MARKET
And what does Qatar has to show the tourists? a closed museum, City centre, sand dunes, and some forgotten beaches. Dude Qatar does not even has a map. You cannot even find a house without asking people for directions. The houses dont even have numbers.
I still remember the leaking stadium during the Asian Games and the newly built road that got swept away. Dude people made a lot of money everyone, expatriates and Qataris as well from the Asian Games. I thought by now the blindfold would have been taken off from the Govt's eyes but looks as if some never learn
Anyways I support qatar's 2016 bid as my business will progress by leaps and bounds.
What did Qatar achieve from the Asian Games?????? This is the question that we should be asking ourselves before we emabark on olympic spending spree
There will be sex, drugs, partying, and alcohol along with it. I don't support bad acts, but the sad fact of life is that is what is needed to bring change, especially to open minds.
>>Maybe to you these are a sad fact of life. But for many people it's not!! This is the exact point knowcollege was trying to point out....with attitude like this..."bad acts"... how will Qatar cope with these sort of changes??
'Our freedom is but a light that breaks through from another world'
@knox, are you serious? It helps from many aspects.
1) Tourism
2) Internationalism
3) Building infrastructure
4) Society change (to please public)
5) More businesses (more competition, lower prices)
6) expansion of region
the list is endless.
Why do you think it'll be a blunder?
Stadiums will always be used. Qatar is set up to buy major football players from around the world to start a Middle Eastern leage, more venues attract more sport and diversity.
You say what tourism do we have?
This is the whole point! To develop and encourage change to promote a tourism sector. What did dubai have? Nothing, it is identical to Qatar.
It seems you have the old Arabic mentality, if there's one company why start another.
Well knox, all I can say is, Dubai is a city in the Emirates. Doesn't matter how successfull it is, Qatar has to look out for it's own interests. I guess that if you love it so much, perhaps it would be a better home.
I can say one thing for sure, if I lived in a country, whether my own or not, I'd hope that it would be a great place to live.
But I agree with the partying comment.
There will be sex, drugs, partying, and alcohol along with it. I don't support bad acts, but the sad fact of life is that is what is needed to bring change, especially to open minds.
We need to learn that what a person does is HIS reponsibility and not our own. We can advise people to be better individuals.
You make it seem as if Qatar won the olympics, the country would look exactly as it is now and not have any differences. Of course that is not the case.
Lets all support the bid because I'm confident it will bring a world of change. Whether for better or for worse, it's better to hope for the best and try, than to admit defeat before trying at all.
^_^

This is the thing yeah....if Doha wins the bid, they would HAVE to be prepared for serious change....like a young unmarried couple who wants to go to the Olympics and stay in the same hotel room *shock horror*...would Qatar be willing to except these changes? Interesting point you raised knoxcollege.....
Our freedom is but a light that breaks through from another world'
If Qatar wins the bid for the 2016 Olympics we should brace ourselves for some serious partying by the english and the European fans.
I hope Qatar Police has no objection to the drunk people on the streets and believe me English Fans dont like the sight of police.
And where there is liquor there will be sex as well. So what do the Qatar laws say on illicit relationships and Qatar should start teaching its police some English as they will need them during the Games.
This is just one aspect there are thousand more uncovered aspects. Now I also support Qatar bid for 2016 Olympics.
How are the Olympics going to benefit Qatar? Tourism?
Did the Asian Games change anything?
If you make a mistake admit it, rather than making a bigger mistake. And I think this is what Qatar is trying to do by trying to host the Olympics Games and setting forth the stage for a blunder. Who is going to use the stadiums after the Olympics?
On a positive note my company will get lots of lucrative contracts if Qatar gets the nod to host the Olympics.
What does Qatar has to attract tourism other than a couple of sand dunes, desert and crappy summer and spring weather. Why is Qatar trying to compete with Dubai. Doha can never attain the status of Dubai.
I hope Qatar wins, I doubt it would mean rent increases.
In fact, if the country develops faster, there will be MORE apartments available and more competition :D

kiko most of the athletes now are under the shade of doping.
Now even if someone breaks a record yotake it with a pinch of salt.
You can start a new thread...."Where will you be in 2016"?
In that way, we can all remember what we said..
Cheers,
Whoever leave Qatar first, pls keep in touch. And remember this conversation in QL ... in 2016 we shall see where we ended up at ... x
It would be nice if Doha win it. But then again ... good excuse for rent hikes. :-(
Stealth, is doesnt mean that there were doping found in sporting event means that all sporting event and all athletes are.
That is a thinking if immatured person. You heard it was black and you assume they appear all black...when you just heard of it and not saw it.
Tell that to the athletes who disciplined themselves to the limit to win the gold - for glory, for honor of the country they represent.
Well.... i think it's wether Madrid or Prague....but da thng is...i doubt it's gonna be 2 running times in Europe...2012 is london &it goes around u knw... ;)
IS this what you are all after!!!!!!!!!
Sport is one big lie and taking place in a system of hypocrisy as a German
doping expert said.

I'm supporting Praha....go PRAGUE!!
'Our freedom is but a light that breaks through from another world'
:)
I dont wanna give hehehe
Stealth, it's not what you can get, but what you can give.
If they get Olympics, rents will be ten times what they are today. I wish they do not get....................
anything offered for supporting the bid?
