Still eager to take master/doctorate degree?
Just snapped in my mind this afternoon about a time when I wanted to take a master's degree in my course. At that time I was also given a privilege but I said it's time for me to face life's odds and evens. But if I would be given a chance and opportunity again, I'll take a go for it. While some people would take an advanced degree just for the monetary issues, mine would just be the willingness to study again...and add a finer conduct to my profession. Like some 'Antartican' guy says: It's never too late.
In these modern times, is it still worth it to take the advanced degrees...or maybe things like these aren't really practical anymore? I hope not.
P.S. I also noticed that the more a man studies in his life, the more he's tolerant. I may be wrong...as what I usually say in my signature.
Rich perhaps my post has seemed bit harsh, in no way was i writing off the idea completly, It is indeed a hell of an undertaking and there are many people at my company who never completed there doctorate, while trying to do them while working. I do know what it entails as have friends doing Phd's at my place of work. The work I do is predominantly research and I have been out at silly times at night in UK as well as in the middle of nowhere in Africa and Asia doing performance investigations of surfaced and unsurfaced roads.
As I said though in my post it needs a careful decison, For you it worked out but I have also observed a negative attitude to Dr's in industry, the guy doesn't actually say what subject he wishes to study in. In addition I remember reading a salary article on the UK and higher salaries weren't always reflected in having a Dr.
If they are not sure - do a masters and see how they get on.

A PhD is not just a piece of paper, it is five very long years of hard work in my case in my own time (weekends and nights) whilst carrying out a full time (60hrs plus) working across Europe in the Highways sector. Now i wouldnt have got my job here without it, and no i am not an academic, i am a well rounded hands on engineer, perhaps you may have been out with me all the nights testing with my University then you would have had the slightest insight into what it actually entails. Now you can sit in a lab and prove anything, or model, massage statistics to get what you want and uphold your hypothesis in your final viva, but what does that get you, you may have well just done a online degree which probably will turn out to be fake, kind regards Dr
Go for it... Choose a topic of interest to you and not just one that may help in career advancement..
Never stop learning.........
I have generally experience that a Masters is a good choice no matter what field you are in.
Dr or Phd need to be a careful decison as you are essentially studying a very specific process which doesn't lend itself to Industry and more likely to be as precursor to going into Academia. I knew a guy at work who dropped his Dr title from his bus cards etc becuase he didn't want to be labled as a person who couldn't do anything apart from his doctorate.

I completed my MBA a few years ago.You can never stop learning..
The "advanced degrees" may not help you get a better job, but they will always enrich your life..
better to pursue your plan before you'll find another reason to stop your eagerness.

...who needs a postgraduate degree in here anyway? They can hire retarded managers instantly who might've only finished high school! LOL

heery_yuy2 i would also like to know, but i am anxious about the kind of diploma i might receive knowing the large fake diploma scam over the internet. whoever would be proud to hold a fake diploma?
Of course higher Degrees are still worthwhile, however depends which University you obtained them from which will predict your future salary. If you get an MSc from Oxford then the skys the limit, howver it depends on your attitude for the job. You will find that employers arnt just looking for the degree status, they are looking more at your life experience e.g. past emplyers etc. When i applied for the job here i found that there was some reluctance to offer me an interview as i have a PhD, however after demonstrating that i am not an academic who sat behind books all my life, i could demonstrate hands on experience in my field, good luck!
And might've to remind you all that it's a MSArch in Urban & Environmental Planning that I'm supposed to take for postgraduate degree...which isn't just an 'online' degree. It's a real school study.

in BIOCHEMISTRY OR CLINICAL CHEMISTRY...so I could do some major subject teaching when I retire (seriously) :-)
or take some educational units...
Anybody has any idea on what SCHOOL they offer those here?
I have just finished my masters degree online couple of weeks ago. Now i feel that I want to learn more, pursue my studies... Love studying... However, the main problem is online stuyding is quite expensive.. I want to wait maybe one year, and then continue... maybe another MA, or y not docotorate..
I've just applied to do an MSc online...fingers crossed!!
I have post-graduate diplomas, but I still want to study. I haven't figured out yet how to that here in Qatar.

Everything happens for a
reason.
You got it all wrong. Once you started to know you can't stop to know more. It's as simple as that.
I think it all differs in what the person's main objective in professional development. Some people may think, the higher the degree you earn, the bigger your price value or just simply self-fulfillment.
I'm planning to take my masters online, but still hesitant in pursuing it.
If ever I'll be able to get my M.A.N., I'll go back to teaching again.
