Pinoys allege discrimination after being turned away by realty agents on overcrowding, ‘smelly' food complaints

DUBAI: Filipinos allege that real estate agents are refusing to rent out apartments to them in certain Dubai buildings and areas - and their dried fish delicacy is partly to blame.

They told us Filipinos are prone to overcrowding.

The reason? "With Filipinos, you find 20 of them in a two-bedroom unit. Don't blame my landlord."

Some residents specifically look for buildings where there are no Filipinos to avoid the smell of dried fish fouling up their rooms, especially in centrally cooled buildings," said Kumar, referring to "tuyo" (dried fish or squid).

Ironically, even some Filipinos find it disgusting as the smell tends to linger and sticks to clothes.

"Either I follow my owner's orders or I'm out," said Saeed, a building watchman in Deira.

If I entered a villa or community and was greeted by something I thought was foul-smelling I would not rent there and neither would most people.

Personally, I do not mind the smell of fish.

are normal. I also don't like these filipino dried fish same way I hate masalla - my nose gets irritated by it.

TB,that is the other way. It will be better if you also insert inside the meat the crushed garlic, rosemary & black pepper. Then make a gravy composed of rosemary, lemon, black pepper & salt....apply it on the beef while being roasted....every 10 mins. It will be yummier. Hmmmmmn...Im getting hungry.

TB, how do you cook roast beef? If it smells like the gravy of fresh rosemary leave, lemon, olive oil & pepper would be nice.

The smell of dried fish (tuyo, daing or dilis) are smelly when cooking (it is true!) but they are so yummy.

I agree with pamity; this shouldn't be discussed in the main forum or shouldn't be posted at all even in filex. I dont really understand why this Flipino OP posted this topic here.

this is better posted in FILEX than in the main forum for the obvious reason...

oh my!!! and what about our mallus who stay as many as possible in a 4 x 5 mtrs room and sometimes share the bed in shifts and the seductive smell of coconut oil in their hair wafting all over the place and the smell of spicy curry cooking in the kitchen must make for an interesting experience

Put many lines under the word Kumar ... lol ..

Well frankly i do hate the smell of dried fish, and when my wife cook it i really feel like Suffocating, however, once we open the windows .. it takes a while before it's gone

on the other side, we have neighbors who cook and the smell is really terrible WHOLE DAY LONG .. and we can smell it from our apartment and they are living in the lower floor.

Interesting post. This type of discrimination occurs all over the gulf.. Just a sad fact of life..

Haven't we seen ads on QL requesting specific nationalities only ..

There's Hakarl in Iceland/Greenland, Stinky Tofu in China, Kimchi and Hongeo from Korea, and from the fashion capital France they have Vieux-Boulogne Cheese aka Sablé du Boulonnais and Époisses de Bourgogne Cheese (banned in France by public transport because of its smell!), Natto and Kusaya from Japan, etc.. there's more. Google all of these.

Overcrowding? Of course! How on earth could these people afford an individual flat with their meager salaries. But here's the thing: can Dubai send all these people back to their countries? Hell no!! However small these people earn they contribute something in the country. You can find them in almost every industry: health, entertainment (we are tops here!), business, etc...Get rid of the stink and see what happens.

It was posted by a Filipina out of interest. Not someone that was looking for it to become a topic of degredation....

Stop seeing the evil in every post and use your brains to think first before you post your stupid responses.

Extreme foul body odor is the real deal - biological weapon of mass destruction. Hope countries won't use it against each other because it's absolutely deadly!!! Sorry to say that.

I love dried fish & squid, and smoked fish. People don't know what good stuff they're missing. The tiny dried fish "dilis" is nutritious, full of protein.

Bon Appetit Pinoys!

Why blame people for their life styles & food when we all know our own flaws!?!...

I say live & let live, whats an odour ( good / bad ) is a persons choice & life style, but try not bothering others with it...

Welcome, one more serious complaint on environment pollution ? no one to be blamed except the users.

It is much better to smell it from the food since its their natural smell than from a human being who smell worst than a decaying garbage.

hahahaha...how about those who never take a bath??

just polish their hair with oil or gel, wear their unwashed clothes again and again and again...

Just make sure you will not be sitting beside the fax machine,or else, when they come and send fax.say good bye to your good day.

People are immune to our own smell. Now, I just don't know if I smell like cows as in Beef, or Chicken like in KFC Nuggets basket. Yikes!

I love to eat dried fish and dried squid. At least the smell will only last for an hour or a day in one place unlike to those who are a walking air pollutants.

How abt over-spiced curry? The landlords in Dubai should consider banning people prone to stinking up the entire hood with coconut oil.
