Smokers Lounge

Hi All

I invite all those smokers who are desperately seeking to quit smoking and need advice. I have been a smoker myself for almost 18 years now and understand the negative impact of this addiction on human body and mind very well. I also know that most smokers do want to give up smoking due to health related issues but couldnt do it sometimes due to lack of will or circumstances. It is high time we treated smoking not as an addiction but a disease-a disease that requires immediate counselling meidcal attention. I welcome you all to give tips and suggestions to peope suffering from the most dangerous of diseases of the 21st century. I shall be positng more facts on this issue in the coming future to create awareness among all to avoid this abominalbe habit.

Regards
arvind

I need help too, anyone please?

Hi

Ever since my arrival in Qatar my smoking has increased drastically. Its been 3-4 packets(60-80 Cigs) each day. I desperately want to see a tobacco cessation specialist so that I can either reduce or completely give up this habit. I am here on a visit visa, hence cannot visit a government run hospital like Hamad, which I have heard has a dedicated clinic to treat smokers. Does anyone know of any private hospital offering help in this regard? I need immediate medical intervention.

talking is a good start (unless you smoke more when having a conversation) but what is really required is ACTION

Try Chantix. Can't get it here, have to order it online and have it sent over. You take it twice a day for 3 months. You smoke through the first week to week & a half and then quit. Chantix acts on the brain and blocks your craving for nicotine. I know, I ordered some and I was smoking 4packs a day, I quit on Chantix 3 weeks ago. Don't even want one any more. :)

Look at where and when you smoke. Most smokers have "habits" - avoid those places and try to change your schedule (i.e. you smoke when you have a workbreak - do something else - go get some water, chat with people who aren't smoking). Be conscious of what triggers your reaching for a cigarette and make a conscious effort to change your habits.

It's not easy (I know, I smoked for 15 years) but if you can change your physical habits that right now accomodate your habit, it is "easier". Take it one step at a time (I didn't have a cigarette today, last 2 days, past week/month etc. - I have a streak going - don't break it) Get new habits, something that keeps your hands busy - I took up knitting (maybe not an option for you??LOL) and you can't smoke and knit at the same time (it also requires some concentration at least in the beginning) - maybe model making, weight lifting, etc.?

A guy I work with stopped over night when he had a stroke. Are you going to wait for the stroke or quit now?

the best way is not to cut down but to completely stop. nicotine supliments do help you to get past the psychological addiction of holding the cig and breathing it in but you also psychologically know that you are getting your dose and eventually you'll go back. so the best way is to completely stop. decide and be sure of it in your mind before attempting it because it is difficult. get the support of your family and friends and tel them to encourage you and help you not to slip.

there are many good websites which offer advice. simply google it.

im a smoker and im not ready to give up yet. i can admit this! ive never tried but i have read a lot about it, so i am informed when my time comes! right now its dunhill all the way !!

RESPECT to you if you give up coz i know how wonderful this disgusting habit is!
