Should we ban large sugary drinks..

Mayor Bloomberg is trying to ban large sugary drinks being sold. A judge has said the ban is illegal.

Bloomberg said it was important for government to educate the people about what they are eating.

Yes, education is important, BUT should a government be able to ban the sale of such drinks?

Is this Big Brother ? Is it going too far ?

What say you ?

this ban is good for hard headed people, who know that downing too much sugar in their system is harmful, yet they still do...

companies get richer for producing and selling "harmful" products... people get sick... they go for costly cure... yet the best action to take is prevention...

i salute the mayor for initiating the move...

I personaly believe that blanket bans are wrong. Education does work - but to a degree.

Banning stuff is the Commie’s way of running things.

If we as a modern society believe in individual freedoms of buyer and seller, and the worldwide accepted concepts of market transactions without Big Brotha’s middling in it, this question should be out of discussion.

BTW , how about banning landlord from increasing rent?

go to any normal juice stall and ask for mix juice or abaadi, avocado or any fruit juice and see the amount of sugar they add to that drink...one will get diabetic drinking those juices...:(

im in full support of banning sugary drinks but really that is not enough. So many restaurants and take-away stores that sells junk food at a very cheap cost and healthy food is so very much expensive.

It comes back to a deeper issue in the US about how the government subsidizes the production of corn, which ends up as sugar. The US agricultural sector is awash with sugar, and it's hardly surprising that the end result has been producers of beverages pushing the costs lower and lower.

Bans, taxes, restrictions etc may be effective to a degree, but they aren't addressing the root causes.

Banning where people can and cannot smoked as worked to drop the number of people who smoke in the West, so perhaps the answer is also banning where people can buy Big Gulps. Perhaps not in the vicinity's of schools or playgrounds?

bans can work indirectly: by being discussed in forum/legal battles (which bloomberg lost yesterday but ill appeal), it raises awareness between the poplulace.

Bans never work, and nor do warnings.

In my view large, sugary drinks should be taxed, to help offset the financial pain to society that a generation of obese diabetics is now costing.

I agree in principle to the idea that if someone wants to drink, smoke, or eat himself to death then that's his own choice. But at the end of the day, it is other taxpayers left to cover the cost of treatments, surgeries and medications. A tax could help with this cost, as well as making people think twice about drinking a cup of sugar water.

hehe..as if after so called 'warnings' cigarette sales is down!! not really,

sugary drinks are still not as injurious as sugar-coated words :)

Rather they should carry the injurious to one's health type warnings that are trumpeted on cigaret packs. Not everyone might buy those upsized sodas to consume alone, and on the other hand someone who wishes to consume larger amounts may then still buy two or three of the available small size ones, hence banning large size sugary sodas alone would be senseless.

There's an obesity epidemic and steps need to be taken. Too much sugar is a major cause of obesity, and there's no need for those huge Big Gulp style drinks.
