Should she be allowed?

Jodi Jaecks is a breast-cancer survivor who had a double mastectomy to prevent any recurrence of cancer.

She never had reconstructive surgery so her torso is now the same as any man's.

Yet she still wasn't allowed to swim topless at a public pool, even though a full body swimsuit would cause her pain because of her still healing chest.

The parks department finally allowed her to swim after several articles were published about her struggle.

This implies all flat chested women should be allow to go topless in pools...

Only means she's still healing inside.

People see the scar and they think the wound "inside" is healed....WRONG.

Muscles and layers of muscles intertwined with sheaths, veins and capillaries were surgically cut and removed. These muscles doesn't regenerate and it take months to heal. We see scars because the skin heals faster but underneath it, is all sore.

Plus the fact that one's body metabolism affects the healing process...

Not surprised about the negative reactions...people reacts to things they don't know or cannot comprehend...or refuse to understand because it goes against to what they believe in or grew up knowing.

I applause the woman who stood firm...and to those who supported her right....BRAVO!

US? Is there still anything restriction left there?

The United States. Not here in the ME, where even men are discouraged going topless :)

She has the same traits of 'thinking of the larger good' as is displayed by many posters here...or is she an old QLer just reliving good old times...:)

BTW, where is this all happening, I mean which country?...:)

From the picture the scaring didn't look bad. However, would you tell a burn victim they couldn't go to the pool because their scars might scare children? What about an amputee?

What about scars ? Could they scare children ?

I think she should be allowed Flor. The issue with women going topless is that people don't want to see their breasts, or there breasts are considered sexual. Since she no longer has breasts she should no longer be held to these socially imposed constraints.

Her chest is no different than a mans.

As for going to work topless and walking around. If she works in an environment or is in an environment where men go about topless, than I don't see why she shouldn't.

Well from reading her posts, I'd say she has made her opinion on the matter very clear!

you posted it and yet, you have not given yours!

And what is next, she would petition to go to office topless or walk around topless?

This is a tricky one!

It would personally freak me out a little but if she is uncomfortable wearing a bathing suit up top and the doctors have suggested that this will help her then she should be allowed to.

By Miss Mimi• 24 Jun 2012 12:08

Because some people don't have the courage to speak up and go on national TV Flor.

If a woman with a masectomy wants to wear a top to the pool, no one is stopping her. However, for those who don't, they won't have to speak up about it.

By flor1212• 24 Jun 2012 12:05

It should be a case to case basis as the authorities suggested. Why does this woman want to speak for others. Let others speak for themselves and the authorities to act on it accordingly!

Prisoner she HAS nothing personal up there. She doesn't even have nipples. there is absolutely nothing but scar tissue.

Brit, If all the woman look like her. Absolutely no breasts left, no nipples, etc. Than I don't see why she shouldn't push for it. Why should a woman with a masectomy have to go through the ringer every time they want to go swimming (as per doctor's recommendations).

No Merci, I imagine the t-shirt would cling and hurt as well.

I don't know....lately people are pushing it left, right and center...all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons. Can't they all meet somewhere in the middle? If this lady feels pain wearing a top, can't she just put a t -shirt on? why do people always have to push agendas to the limit?

Even though

But still she is a girl..

She has to hide her personals..

I hope u r getting my point

My gut feeling is that she should probably be allowed to do this, I would be interested to hear the views of a medical professional re the top being painful or uncomfortable.

By britexpat• 24 Jun 2012 11:33

I fully support her cause. However, she is disagreeing with the local authority where they say that they will consider each application on a case by case basis..

So, my point is - She has got what she wanted . Is she now asdking for too much ? or do we allow everyo9ne with a full mastectomy to swim topless ?

By Miss Mimi• 24 Jun 2012 11:26

Did you see the CNN article Brit?

I agree with her that the law should be changed for all women with mastectomy scars. Especially as swimming is touted as a good way to get the scar tissue stretch and moving again...

The reason women's bathing suits have a top is to cover breasts. These women don't have breasts. So why should they have to cover? Especially as it is uncomfortable to wear clothing on healing scars.

And just because they aren't as painful as they were, doesn't mean they still aren't painful or uncomfortable.

The full story is not there , so let me play the devil's advocate here...

She has now been given permission to swim topless in Seattle's pools - only during adult lap sessions.

However, she is now saying that this is not good enough.. She wants the dress code changed for all women with mastectomy scars.

In addition , she admits that currently bathing-suit tops aren't as painful as they were in February.

So, my question - Is she now pushing the barrier a little too far ?

By Miss Mimi• 24 Jun 2012 11:13

Why not Prisoner?

She doesn't even have nipples, much less breasts.

Not sure what's wrong with your link Prism, it's opening for me.

I was allowed to swim with my C-section scar after 6 weeks, even though it still wasn't healed.

"Still healing chest"...wouldnt the water cause some medical problems, I mean like some infection, etc. Moreover wouldnt swimming itself cause pain, when the part hasn't healed yet?

P.S.: Can't open the link.

I've been through the pain of lumpectomy and trust me, it hurts really bad. I am still recuperating even after a year. Its sad that people care less until they go through the situation.
