@elle: SAFE DRIVING AND ACCIDENT FREE COUNTRY STARTS FROM BEING A GOOD AND SAFE DRIVER..

As I have observed, some of the drivers in Doha are not diligent in using signal lights when infact this is the easy tool to communicate with each other on the road. Another thing is how to use the round aboout lane. I felt so nervous commuting specially when we started entering those areas. I hope there is a way to change this attitude to avoid accident and delays. I just wanted to express my concern for the good of all commuters be it local or expats.

Not only in Qatar... I was nearly run over by a car on Sunday, while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing. The driver saw me and purposely sped up and then cursed me for not jumping out of his path. Weak characters just like feeing powerful!

IQ tests? As s_isale asked "Does it show the true worth of an individual?" It doesn't. Emotional Intelligence tests maybe. But even so, many mild mannered people turn out to be demons behind the wheel!

Then what about the people already here? They would easily qualify.

Bit overzealous with the moderation there?

Anyone coming to Qatar with a driving licence from a country with with a death rate of > 10 per 100,000 population / annum should be subject to an extended driving test (theory and practical) and a 5 x increase in insurance premium too.

s_isale, it should be road or traffic specific IQ tests, not the useless general ones. And, of course, questions based on assumptions. And if you pass the test, there is still a chance that you do wrong in a certain situation.

Of course Qatar needs to change. Road deaths are the number one cause of death, according to government statistics. They account for nearly 20% of all deaths, which is about 13 times that of the US, Britain or other European countries. In fact one would need to go to an area that has land mines under its roads or is fighting a war in order to find significantly higher rates of rate deaths than in Qatar.

More stringent application of road laws, to all individuals regardless of nationality, by an empowered traffic police department, has GOT to be enacted.

Oh and an extended driving test for anyone who might be cosidering driving a Tiida or a white pick up truck. You know what I mean...

They should introduce intelligence tests and psychological tests before they allow people to enter the streets!!
