Road Rage

Though an old topic, and one of most discussed ones too.

But a friend of mine experienced something unusual last evening near iftar time. He is a middle aged man who strictly follows rules and regulations.

Last evening when he was coming back home, was harrassed by a local female driver, who was trying to overtake his car, and was going well beyond the speed limit. My friend gave her way, but somehow she was utterly angered for some odd reason, and tried to HIT him several times. (by braking in front, by trying to hit him from side, repeatedly)

he managed to avoid it and also noted the car number plate. My question is can he report this life threatening road rage, though he has no proof. And where to report.

This road rage should come as no surprise as we all know how certain people drive here in Qatar during non fasting months. The lack of respect and consideration for others during the holy month does not diminish. Level of IQ or education? You choose.  It is what it is and we should keep that in mind and have good situation awareness every time we get behind the wheel.

I had experiance on the way home with a karwa driver who was driving like a maniac, he was beeping his horn at cars to get out of his way, when the traffic lights where on red, he added ten minute shortcut to my usual five minute journey and did not stop on entering roundabout (i prayed to my god, as the front grills of a land cruiser where heading straight to my window!!) when i question his decision to go this way, he burst out in to a tryant of abuse at how i should not be speaking as he is fasting!! and this was only 2pm so god only knows how he was by 4.30 i am new to the culture and respect the reason why they are fasting but when they put my safety at risk it is my right to give back the abuse he gave !! today i think i will try my luck against the sun and walk

With all these road madness syndrome apparently we are all experiencing, guess only thing we can do is of course to be patient on the road and just give way. It pissed me off tousand times but its safer. I'm also a lady driver but being expat sure does experience road bullying either by covered ladies or some arrogant men trying to show off. Tried to report incident once but since I dont talk arabic, it was just a waste of time. What I learnt here is that if you have car which can match their crazy driving speed apart from road limits.. I just drive faster than they can if I'm in such rush. Otherwise when im tired, fuming and not so ready for road fights I just stay on slower lanes calming myself and give some crazy screwed up heads the benefit of taking, cutting my way including those in front who drives slower than lazy a sigh...(swearwords in all languages). After all just wanna reach destination safely like all the rest.

Go easy Suhail - I totally get your inner rage but as you well know, there is only going to be one winner and unfortunately loser ............. personnally, I believe that NO Qatari below the age of 25 should be allowed to drive any vehicle with an engine size in excess of 1.6 litre.

Btw the problem with Qatari lady drivers starts at the driving test ground when the accompanying Father has a quiet word with the testers ....................

I had a similar experience a few months ago. One early morning, I was driving down the Shamal highway, on the left lane, minding the 100 km/h speed limit. A young local in a pickup was tailgating me, flickering his headlights and blowing his horn to give him right of way. Which I did once my right lane was empty. But apparently, I did not move fast enough for him. He literally tried to hit my car and tried to push me off my lane to hit other cars.  I lost it, I started chasing him, trying to stop him. Had I succeeded, I would have definitely beaten him, regardless of the consequences. I chased him for 3 more exits, missed my exit and came to work late and enraged. I would still kick his a$$ if I ever see him again.

TC, I strongly suggest your friend go to the authorities.  Whether they decide to pursue this or not, your friend or someone else may not be so lucky next time.  I was in a similar position last year but unforunately it resulted in an accident. I have to agree about the lady drivers in Doha, I'm not sure they realise they have to actually stop at the roundabout.  To be fair to them, it must be difficult for them to see with their face pretty much fully covered and then huge sunglasses to ensure they can't see at all!

from personal experience, i have noticed that most of the time, the women drivers dont have control over their cars, especially the cruisers and patrols, and are not able to even stay in the lane or manage the roundabouts. they keep applying breaks on empty roads.

if she was driving parallel to our german friend, and unable to control her car, it would appear as if she is trying to ram into his car. add to this, her fasting, as well as her speed, and she is an accident waiting to happen on the road.

If your german friend doesnt speak arabic, then its better to take someone along who can speak arabic. Its worth approcahing the police and checking what they think of the whole issue.

Tinker - Even if you're not driving u could become their victim.

I was once walking in the street bringing an umbrella, when a speeding Landcruiser's side mirror hit my umbrella,I became a spinning coin..and was out of balance..I have nothing more to say but "Homar (Donkey)..I promise myself never to take umbrellas again. :(

I'm not muslim, but I know this month is very holy and i guess it's time for kindness and a full surrender of one's self to Allah.. not hitting somebody else's car for whatever reason..

"oh,i'm sorry i was just so hungry and in a hurry to prepare food for iftar..I'm sorry for hitting u repeatedly.." -Is that something we want her to tell the police?

If she's in a hurry she won't bother hitting other person's car repeatedly. This only shows she wants to show that she's powerful and maybe one of the people who are above the law which Qatar Traffic Law claimed that "NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW AND TRAFFIC REGULATIONS ARE IMPLEMENTED FOR EVERYONE".. They deserve a standing ovation for that with trumphets being played..

Rizks when fasting the bladder should be empty especially late in the afternoon.Maybe she had other problems that she and God only knows. I don't normally say this but I feel sorry for this poor german chap who had to endure this Rage from a local lady..

By Khanan• 17 Aug 2011 09:38

you are right but they use fasting as excuse for the over-speeding and road rage.

Avoid roads in Ramadan from 5:45-6:10.Its the  most dangerous time and you will see alot of road rage and madness. was witness to few while doing the iftar drive at Ramada Jucntion

Maybe she was in a hurry and wanted to drive fast while fasting..:)Does Fasting make one drive fast? Does one lose their patience more when they are fasting. I thought fasting was all about control and being patience?

He can report this incidence, and they will check on the other party as well. since he has no evidence, its just his word against her's, and it might not get registered as an official compalint. but they may call  both to the police station to sort this matter out amicably.

He needs to report it at the traffic police, in the area where this happened.

Oh, I do hope he speaks some arabic.

Yes he can report it to the local police department nearest that location.  He should write down as many details as he can before even leaving to make the report.  As long as the woman isn't a Qatari national then something may get done, or at least a report on that vehicle's history will get a black mark.  If she is a national, then nothing is usually done.  Keep in mind that if something can be done, at least it is worth trying to remove such an inelegant driver from the roads.
