In reply to Shame on Qatari National Day
Yes, the Qatari National Day was lawless. But it's a day were Qatari people celebrate a special day...just like many countries celebrate some occasions...some throw tomatoes in the tomato festival in Spain, some splash water on people in the streets in the water festival in Thailand, some spray silly strings in Geneve Carnival....and the list goes on...These are just to give examples on the celebrations! Qatar is a safe country, if some of you are shocked to see teenagers sprayed with red or wearing masks! i say it's nothing near having crack and pot in night clubs! or maybe that doesn't shock everyone as they are used to prostitution and getting drunk! If you have time, you better discuss the "law" of prostitution and drugs in your country as both of them are allowed! to be more persist "with limits"!
We respect people in Qatar more than your people respect us in your country...a taxi driver refused to pick my friend in Europe because she's Arab..I saw a man spitting on a girl because she was wearing Hijab in Europe...These are just few to mention!!
We are loving, helpful, respecting people...and we are not willing to change this...If someone doesn't agree and suffer from living in Qatar, we are sorry! more than the huge salaries you get, we can't offer more!
Happy National Day!! :)
...Its just that they were gorgeous and were probably perceived as aliens.

I hope who ever wrote " Shame on Qatari National Day " Reads this.
Im a qatari girl. and im absloutly angry with what u said. u dont even have the rights to do so! listen, if u dont like the way we celebrate, then good for u ! u just insluted the whole qatari people. u know what that would cause u ? Woow ! Good luck i tell u my FRIEND! If u have a good thing to say about us ur more than welcome, if u dont then keep it to ur self! we celebrate how ever we want, and not just because YOU dont like how we celebrate our national day DOSEN'T mean that we would change it, okay ? u better watch what ur saying and KNOW who ur talking about ! Got It ? ">.> !!
Oh and btw, what you call " shaving cream " is NOT shaving cream, its " fake snow ", ur just too stupid to know that! i bet u would go use it :]! YEAH I SAID THAT !
you or anyone. She commented honestly about what she experienced on national day in regards to traffic issues, bad behavior and the lack of authorities intervening in situations that were potentially dangerous.
If you take issue with some of the rude things other posters chimed in with, no problem. But her initial post was absolutely appropriate and okay. She has a right to voice her opinion, as we all do.
Quit harping on her.
Get a new hobby.

You should have been in the company of women in that crowd to know what I mean. Every passing local teenager was peeping into my car and behaving like a hooligan. The women in question were terrified. I'am not sure whether the women in burqas were spared. Verisi...I dont think that kind of behaviour and harrassement can be justified under any circumstance. If it was India,I would resorted to physical measures then and there. I was looking for police guys but they were nowhere in sight. I was seriously psyched up mate.

It will be broadcast on TV... or at least Youtube...
In this particular case, I am supporting the host... and having endured two hours in my own car with three kids of three years or below, I think I am entitled to offer vociferous support...
you are regretting that you 'criticized' something related to Qatar... that's just saying you wish you had shut up... that is nothing near an apology... an apology would be conceding what you said was wrong and that you were wrong to complain... which you haven't... some gracious guest you are...
Damn this thread is getting too much!!

I made the mistake of criticizing something related to Qatar and Qataris and I deeply regret that. I would like to urge all you expats to stop responding and especially stop writing these outrageous insults on QL.
WORDS HURT.
Please choose yours more carefully than I did and stop this before more people are hurt.
I didn't drink the kool-aid! -- PM
I honstly did not like the traffic and I will vote from now till tomorrow to improve it.
For me as a Muslim if I say a bad word then this is a sin and if another 5 said or learnd this bad word and said it then I will have my sin on my shoulders in addition to their sins when they said this bad word.
So I will never ever use bad words.
Its not wise to use threatening language. We are all here on a discussion and won't be effective in a fit of anger. it will only convince the masses futher that this certain group of people sow feeling of hatred all over the world. And it have always been.
I guess water and tomatoes festivals and prostitution + night clubs are not as dangerous as silly things boys do here, if u are nuts and suicidal thats fine, but at least one should respect other's life.
Qatariah...not sure why you should choose to post a response to a 'feedback' by an expatriate. These 'feedbacks' will only improve what is already so good in your country. As you rightly said,we are here for the fat pay cheques and will go away sooner or later. But if we are able to contribute to the well being of your country by anyway we can - It would only help.
The moral of the story is - The Traffic Guys failed miserably and your youth need to be managed well on occassions like these.
Not sure why all others are getting involved in matters not related to the main post.

stevil09 said Taxi driver are just scared ...
Taxi driver are just scared that the arab he picked might blow up himself. Thats a natural reaction not racism
seriously??? why is the admin on this website not saying or doing anything about this retard?? how is this type of immature crap being allowed to be posted??
You know what's messed up people? is that if i were anywhere else in the world and started to make fun of the people and the government of that country, i'd get in trouble. and if somehow some guy's got his head so far up his ass (excuse my language) that he has no idea where he is and what he's doing, then someone needs to take care of it. simplest solution is to call the authorities and show them what this guy has been typing, and im pretty sure they'll find him if they really want to. but hell im not gona let anyone take away my fun time!!! so again you want a place and a time? sure. i love in west bay. gimme a call whenever you're in the area and i'll gladly meet you :)
stdumbass09- dude are you kidding? hahahahaha, you wana act all tough on this website then go ahead. but leme tell you this. you want me to name a place and time? sure but you will get hurt. you're a sad little man who craves attention, and ul sadly try to get some any way you can. let me tell you something tough guy. my mobile number is 5727155, so whenever you're ready gimme a call and i'll set up everything for you. If someone needs to teach you some respect and manners then screw it i'll do it. hell i know lots and loottsss of people who would love to get on this too, but hey I want you aall for my self. so go again then tough guy. show me what u got. you want someone to snap you out of your misery? sure. i'll glady kick your ass to the moon.
"Everybody is a racist you dumb heads" is a great racist comment
Stevil09 just wants to spew his venom all over the forum, you need to stop digging a bigger hole for yourself and in the words of Edlover "C'MON SON GET THE F OUTTA HERE WITH THAT SH*T".
You are not even capable of bringing across any viable points or constructive criticism, and it shows in each and every one of your posts.
You are just one of those haters that jump the bandwagon whenever you are given the opportunity, every body else just gave their 2 cents and left, but you are still stuck here with your rubbish.
If anyone should be banned it's you and the likes of you that reek of self righteousness and superiority.
stevil09
"Never" hahahahahahahaha
that is so funny man! You are sooooo hilarious, do you seriously believe that? If you do, then you are delusional and need help ;)
stevil09
Human rights and equality are granted by our religion thank god! We respect other's humanity and do not discriminate. Of course there are exceptions who do not follow these islamic rules but in general we do not discriminate.
I saw discrimination with my own eyes in Europe; taxi drivers refusing to take on Arabs just because they are Arabs and muslims. Qataries where hit and killed in the UK in the most reacists of crimes. Muslims and Arabs all over the world are discriminated againt and now you say we are the ones that do not respect human rights and equality!
Just how did we strayed away into racist topic. The potentials are there, and thats why people are frighten. Just like everything else that we have to buy to enjoy, human capital are hard to come by if you want to succeed. The best to perform still comes from elsewhere, and of course you have to pay for their services
I am betting just Moejoe's Land Cruiser exhaust fumes would be enuff to blow stevil09 back to where he came from...
I accept currency and you can bet your car... cheques not accepted...

this thread has, as like others has been conveniently hijacked...
Now back to topic, Qatar National day is the only day where Qataris get to enjoy their Patriotism. They tried to have fun their own way, whichever they want, whether driving LC's or spraying shaving creams (lol... shaving creams are harmless).. many expatriates joined in the fun and it was memorable for many.
One or two rouges spoiled the day for some of you here, and the victim vented their anger on a public forum with a rather strong generalisation on the entire event itself, angering the spirits of the day. (the topic title was wee bit out of context).
That thread gave some spineless retards a chance to release out personal feelings on the locals. Its just not surprising that some smart ones tried to come clean on this thread.
wat happens in other countries, like how many of you mentioned, is not worth commenting.
continue with the hijacking.. pajju and gang..lol

are you trying to show me how clean you teeth are.
you black half broken teeth still doesnt impress me.
In the last two days there were camles and horses in some places where Qatari people are celebrating.
A Qatari should not be a shame when hearing about horse or camle.
See it is very when you go another country to forget your culture and original country.
For example some Indians who go to USA or UK to study feel ashame to answer the question where you come from?
Or if he get the USA or UK passport he will tell you I am british.
Who does not have a past does not have future.
yes and i am going to camel race today again to see our camels win :D
Anyone could jump in and post to get the topic back on the track...

There were even Camels in the Parade. Camels are part and parcel of the celebrations.

Darude's longest post EVER...yehhheeeyyy!!!!
DaRude, I was waiting for a full on comment from you.
And I agree with you. I posted a thread last week about the traffic diversions, as I was trying to avoid this nightmare for a few people.
azilana7037, I know PM didn't mean anything by what she wrote, she has been in Qatar for quite some while, and is happy with her life here. The title, yes I agree could have been better - but it did upset many Qatari's. The msg's that I got last night from girls were horrific, but I didn't expect that they would react in such a poor manner. The personal attacks were out of the question and not called for.
Yes, the kids on the cars and hanging from the windows, I myself was against. Not because I didn't want them to celebrate and have a good time, but the WHAT IF's that kept on crossing my mind - it truly wouldn't be worth it. The 15 kids all jammed into one car, for the ride was sweet, but also, it was a dangerous thing to do.
But who am I to say anything ey?
azilana7037, miss U - lets see you on the 25th morning at the collection stop. Would love to catch up.
i posted several other comments long one.
and for sure i also enjoy the day just was cursing myself for few thing that I MISSED.
i forgot to take the air horn with me.
i forgot to take that ribbon shooter (what the hell do you call that)
i forgot to take camera with me to take some nice pic.
and i never found that small flag to stick it on my window.

But I do agree that the TITLE did elicited reactions from all.
But still...a good topic title do get people's attention and create curiosity from others.
But(again)...there's no need to be vindictive about it...
are simply great you guys rock.
Instead of coming up with suggestions or ideas all of you are throwing trash on each other.
A member just pointed some cons you could have come up with pros.with some positive points.
But no all of you are just trying to show what a low life pathetic you can get.
Instead of discussing the day and the events all you guys are stuck in traffic how bad it was.
Well believe me the traffic wasnt that bad compared to last year. This time it was alot better and the arrangements done this year were alot better than the previous one. So it does get better and will get better in coming years.
And its just one day in a year they get to Celebrate as they want. How many public holidays do you get other then Eid?? So its ok to loosen yourself a lil bit.Few of the guys did come towards my car with silly string and spray but when they looked at me they stepped back without doing anything :P Well i wasnt that scary i guess dont know what happened to them.
The worst thing is the drifting where their cars get on fire or some accident happens i didnt hear of that and i think they didnt try that. Or maybe they did it in Indus area where they found themselves a new heaven. But still the police gets them there.
Now all of you Shut you filthy mouths and stop bashing pointing fingers.
GET BACK TO WORK YALLA
Plus am enjoying all this carry on :D
speaking one's mind is one thing and being vitriolic is another... 'Shame on Qatari National Day' is a very instigating title and she got what she asked for... like she always does... she instigates trouble... and usually others pay the price for it...
but you guys think it's NICE/MATURE to hit back on PM for "speaking her mind"? This is Qatarliving.com, we post topics about living in Qatar. She may be very vocal that she was pissed off by what she experienced but other posters did post their experiences which i could say, adding gas to the fire.
Nonetheless...PM could not be faulted for what she said, coz she speaks HER TRUTH and "TRUTH HURTS", you know. And for the period of Time I've known PM here in QL, she do defend the Muslim/Qatari culture, beliefs, etc from other posters who crosses the line...
I've been here for almost 5 years now and during QATAR NATIONAL DAY celebrations, I have had good experiences like:
* These teenagers knocking on my car door and putting those little Qatari flags in my car...and shouting happily. You can't help but get affected by their happy attitude.
* car horns and loud music...it's like NEW YEAR celebration back in my country.
* locals and expats waving to each other...
Anyways...we all know that some local teenagers do acted rowdyly that day which somehow inconvenienced a few(if not a lot) people.
It's THAT ONE DAY of the year where Qataris can have fun...just be happy with/for them.
Just my 2 dirhams worth of opinion...Cheers :-)
lets remind some exptriates that they come here for WORK not to ctritize the locals and the laws.
stevil09 , u come here to preach about human rights? go back to ur samoa islands !
As one member said, this forum should be called ZionistLiving as there is too much racism and hatred.
guys anyone know from wer can i get life ?
its mostly the westerners who are complaining... this one here got called out to the sea... but you got busted by the cops... for being you... and guess who's throwing a fit :-))... LOL
UkEngQatar- Wow that sounds like a lot of fun. That would have most definitly been a great place to watch the parade and everything from. I was stuck in traffic all day as well and it was tough, but at the end of the day, you could tell that people were happy no matter what they were doing. It would have been nice if they advertised a bit more about the sailing club, I'm sure it was a great experience!
MoeJoe.. I was invited by the Qatar Sailing and rowing club to part take in the Sailing Regatta to celebrate the National Day. Not only did we get free boats to sail they even threw a bbq and some prizes at the end.
Disappointed that no where in the press was it mentioned. The Traditional dhows were caught on Camera and mentioned in the Press but nothing about the 30 odd sailing boats.
So most of the fun I saw was sitting on my boat and watching the motorcade from the sea.
Saw a LC doing a 180 on the corniche as well as a number of other LC's drifting. Saw young men and children stiing on top of roofs with the Qatari flags, and they all seemed to be enjoying it. Even one youth was standing on top of a moving LC. man this like watching a movie stunt for free. I hope all of them arrived home safely. With the exception of minor accidents which might have been due to the rain as well as due to frustration of sitting in a traffic for hours..:)

I think no need to discuss about traffic & crowed in Qatar national Day. It's a day for Qatari people to enjoy. It's a simple math that someone who don't like the crowd should avoid that area.
But to Qatariah-luv, you mentioned that you respect people in this country !!! I am agree with you but to whom you respect ? Only westerner. Only white skin people you respect. Not to other nationality.
You wrote that your friend refused to ride in a taxi because of muslim and a man spitting on a girl because she was wearing Hijab in Europe. Think about yourself before talking about others. Cause Qatari people never respect any muslim came to work here from South Asia & Asia pacific region. Qatari people respects westernes as like as they are all in all. It seems without them Qatar is meaningless. Where Qatari people even not respecting muslim how you can get respect in Europe where people are non muslim there.
As a example last Friday before 8pm me & two my friends together went to Cornich to see fireworks. While we were going ahead police stop us saying "it's a family day & you cannot go more". Well & we agree that it's a good idea for family roaming in cornich but after couple of minutes we seen two westerner walking & cross the police boundaries. Not a single word from police to them. So, we thought this family day law only for south asian & Asian pacific region expat's or may be police thought those two westerners are gay family.
UkEngQatar- That's the spirit ;)
What am I Gonna to about it.
Next Year I will be much more prepared for the national day motorcade. Instead of wasting my whole day in the sea on the Sailing boat sailing along the Corniche without even been pictured or mentioned anywhere, I am gonna try to buy a Landcruiser and decorate it with Maroon and white and hit the road!
Well like they say. If you can't beat them might as well join them..lol :)

was on the way to Inland Sea and my group of three SUVs got stuck in the sand, we had plenty of kids and it was kinda hot... incidentally it was the same day a large convoy of other expats were going... about 30 of them... they stopped, looked at us... and they drove by...
In the meanwhile, EVERY Qatari who drove by offered or tried to help... we had three different bunch of Qataris in their Land Cruisers and even one on a camel... some of them were rude and impatient and they didn't speak English but their hearts were made of gold
stevil the only reason why anyway would mistreat you or be rude to you is probably because of who you are in the first place and the things you have to say to people. Comeon man, act like a grown up (im guessing ur probably not though from all the comments uv posted). but at least try to imagine ur self being in the shoes of one. No matter where u go, or where u r or where ur from, people would respect you if you respect them back. and quite obviously, you dont respect anyone or anything. Hell, ur probably just doing this to get urself some attention since no one else wants to give you any. get a life.
Using a blog to 'air' provocative statements is an amusing past time to some people - So let's just take it easy! It was Qatar's Day - it was their moment to celebrate !! The majority of expatriates here wish this nation well and were genuinely happy to see the country celebrate! So let's not waste our breath on those who want to nit-pick.
As for the debate on public celebrations - yes there will always be something that could have been done better - but come on guys! Things went pretty well overall. So why ruin it with poisonous remarks?
that's all you can come up with? what am i gona do about it? you think you've got some balls just because you're sitting behind a computer hidden somewhere? hahaha. man you're a joke. actually mr. tough guy, we can stand in the sun for a lot longer than five minutes. you really are ignorant about where you live man. Why dont you go out one day to mesaeed, ras laffan, al khor, etc and tell me what you see inside of the oil and gas plants. Secondly, many people are treated badly in other parts of the world. You try being a muslim/arab in the united states or europe and then come back and talk to me about that. Anyway, what am i Gona do about it? Depends how far ur willing to go amigo. Come out from hiding behind your computer, and maybe then you'l get a better idea. until then, continue with your miserable and pathetic comments which is apparently all ur good at. And again, you seriously think way waaaayy too much of yourself man. Unless you're the CEO of one of the bigeest companies here, then seriously, stop kidding your self. No one really needs you. Hell your old job probably didn;t need you either which is why they probably paid you peanuts compared to what ur getting here. yea, thats right. what are you gona do about it?
to answer your question... I don't feel uncomfortable nor mistreated by Qataris and I choose to stay, and there are tons like us...
We don't mind the dressing restrictions, we don't mind the drinking restrictions, don't mind the heat or the traffic and we don't mind the occasional revelry...
things may still need to improve but meanwhile I'd rather I didn't have to hear mad ravings from disillusioned individuals such as yourself so if you would grace us with your departure... we would be much obliged...
It is Qatar National Day and that is the way they celebrate. I was late on my way to church coz of the traffic but that is alright maybe residents of Qatar really went out of their way on the streets that is why.
We have been sprayed also and I managed to ask the Qatari to give me 1 of it also and I sprayed him back and it was fun. If they celebrate this way then it is a very fortunate thing that they are not under the influence of Alcohol or else it would be a total chaos.
We feel safe (no violence i encountered) on the street and we just enjoy seeing them do their thing except for those reckless drivers but i see that everyday anyway.

is a relative term and there is definite room for improvement every where around the world... but there is also such a thing as 'scale'... this particular issue has been blown out of proportion...
As a proud Qatari, I love my country and I love what it has done for me. Are there things that I dont think are right and that should be changed? Well yea sure. I'm sure we all feel the same way about all our nations. But some people here have really over done it and this shouldn't be the case. I agree with a lot of people who said that those who dont like it should leave. But not out of stuborness or ehatever it is you wana call it. But if I was living somewhere that I apparently that was so bad, then I'd get outa there for my own hapiness and to keep my self sane. Otherwise I'd be turning into a person full of hate and anger like a lot of the people that have been hating on Qatar. Wouldn't you rather be happy? Be somewhere where you dont have so sit and moan all night and day about how bad it is? Then leave! Not because we dont want you here no, but because you're such miserable and depressing people and you're rubbing your misery and hatred on a lot of others which is quite unnecessary! Why must it come down to this thread?!?! This is not right!
is that the best you could come up with?
I am talking six people DEAD... and that's just a teaser...
Here's another appetizing stat from the US...
"A recent analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics shows that, by the time our country finished ringing in the year 2005 (the last year for which data are available), 135 people had died in alcohol-related traffic crashes in the 12-hour span between 6:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve and 5:59 a.m. the next morning."
you are 1000% rite.. i m with you...if some1 feel uncomfortable here then plzz go straight to airport plzz.

stevil09- A lot of what people have said has made sense, both Qatari and the expats, but you're the one who seems to be really pissing me off here. What the hell's your problem? I'm from Qatar, but was raised abroad. I do not appreciate you saying what you said. To show you how retarded you actually are, let me ask you this. You're ticked off at the fact that you didn't have your privacy while you were out on NATIONAL DAY WHEN YOU KNEW PEOPLE WERE GOING TO BE CELEBRATING? Who's fault is that? It doesn't matter whether they the celebrations were handled were right or wrong, but for you to say something ignorant like that just makes me laugh. No worries though, we'll make sure that the next time there's a national day, whenever you come driving by, that everyone just shuts up for your very own privacy. Which i'm sure is what people do for you wherever the hell ur from right? Wake up man. You're offending a lot of people. A lot of locals who quite honestly really won't be affected if you were to leave or not, so stop making it seem like you're doing everyone a huge favor for being here.
While I applaud the National Spirit of The Celebration I DO NOT like the LAWLESS part. We have drivers racing round with no thought to other peoples safety,I simply dont know how you can compare water to the face or throwing over ripe tomatoes to this sort of what I can only call Idiotic Behavour.
You bring up drug and Prostitution? Maybe you need to visit the Ramada Area where these girls are on the streets being picked up by locals and expats.( Maybe search this very site for evidence.
You also mention drug abuse,Well world figures show that traditional Western areas show a decline in drug abuse however in countries in the Middle East are on the rise.

Maybe you need to look at the issues from your own country instead of mutually kissing each others ass,Sort the Virtual Slavery of thousands of low payed workers locked in laborcamps and payed less that what you spent on awful flags on your car.Look at Issues like family days in malls,These guys work all week to make next to nothing and God Forbid they want to spend it or go hang out in a nice mall with friends( FYI without these people and all the other Expats you would be still living in Tents.)
So In Conclusion.
Dont try and Justify your Stupidity,Disrespect and not caring as anything other than what it is.You Disrespect the Qataries that are trying to make this country better and not just come along for the ride.
The bee.. I guess you was inside that day to see all the accidents. I counted seven traffic incidents between the Marriot and Sana Roundabout just within 5KM stretch of Road. I wonder how many more incidents there were like these.
Some of the incidents had Ambulance waiting along the scenes of the accidents.

18th of Dec is the day all Qatari tribes were unified under the Authority of the Country’s Co-founder HH Jassim Althani. It’s a day it defined it’s existence as separate emirate. That’s why it’s called the day of loyalty , solidarity & pride
I guess you knew that already..but couldn’t help not showing off your prejudice ;)

Why do you go out if you have privacy concerns?
Privacy concerns? BS!!!! not on the road. Be at home.
Qatar National Day 2009..
What a shame to Qatar? This is a day when every one should sit quietly at home and respect the nation. Instead, Qatari's and even bl00dy expats where running, jumping, dancing here and there from the main roads of Qatar. How shame it is? What does the other decent expats will think about one of the fastest growing nation..? I was on my way to Sheraton hotel for an official dinner, and it took me 5 effing hours to reach there. When i opened my window to breath some fresh air.. Ohh my God !! These spoiled Qatari kids ran out and sprayed on my face and suit.. I got pissed off..
Even the elder Qatari's were drifting their landcruisers in that small corniche road.. They were about to hit the other vehicle which was parked near by.. OMG ! They are dangerous species.
For all those silly narrow minded people who think like that.. I PITY you !!!!! Phew* Phew* Phew* !!!!!
YOU guys are crying for nothing. As Versi, thebee said, For all those racist creatures, I say, better you guys QUIT Qatar and stay in YOUR own country 'peacefully'.
A big applause to all those kids,Qatari's, and expats who were there for doing those pranks who made our day that night. I REALLY loved it. I too would have joined if my health condition was good.
YOU GUYS SIMPLY ROCK!!!!!

S-Isale.. There are scence of celebrations like these every year when one teams wins the football cup or league title.
But compared to the national day they are very small.
I think we expats just have to get used to this day and plan our day better next year.

I absolutely agree. I have traveled to many places around the world and I have seen crazier things. The original post mentioned that there was no police! Are you kidding me? There were police everywhere closing streets up from one road to another. Also I was in some of the most crowded areas and I could carry a conversation just fine. About expats cars getting sprayed thats a bunch of baloney. Everybodys cars got sprayed whether you're an expat or not lol!....oh and for your information there were many expats singing and dancing in the streets and enjoying the celebrations so don't bring that stuff up at all. If you have an issue with Qatar National day then you better stay at home next year because the people that love our beautiful country celebrated whether it was out in the streets or in their own ways at home or elsewhere. If you can't appreciate a celebration like that, why don't you just pack up your stuff and leave!!!
There were a number of accidents on National day along the route of this motorcade.. I hope that no was seriously hurt.

There was a similar scene when Qatar won the Asian Games football medal. SO why was there no complaints at the time? Most of those who found issue this time round has been in Qatar during that time as well.
Two years it's been in December now...moved from September. My guess is the better winter weather increases participation in the festivities...both a blessing and a curse.

Instead of acknowledging the fact that these Parades of LC's were a menace not only to locals but to the expat residents of Qatar also. I guess I have been out of the country every December to actually appreciate the mayhem for my self. This year unfortunatley I was in the country so yes it did come as a surprise or should I say shock!
There are parades all around the world. Be it a New Year Parade or the New Year Eve Parties on the street with over million people present but at least they are controlled, so at least every one knows where they need to go to shit or relieve themselves if they get caught up in the mob.
I hope that you or your little one did not get caught up in this traffic chaos especially when one is bursting to go :) O well I guess that you know what heppens in these kind of parades and you take adequate supplies with you in case of emergency situation..lol

I agree with you it was such an enjoyable, but it never been shame to us as Qatari people to celebrate it the way we did.
i believe she'd better tell us how the celebrate the new year in their country or maybe she could advise us the number of accidents happen in one city only of her country in that day,or how many goes drunk or under drugs, that if you didn't put in count the Halloween, football games and other festivals. It shame on her the way she speaks about Qataris an describe them as idiots, which they are definitely not ,ALHUMDULELAH we are very sophisticated citizens and the celebration was limited in a certain areas only and the police was surrounding the whole areas and there for help and no accidents were mentioned . It is our right to celebrate this day the way we see it proper and the we did, and all those kids were happy to celebrate it and i can assure her that their reaction against her or her friend was a result for her ACTION which obviously was negative.
Shame on her what she wrote about Qatar, and hope she enjoy the new year celebration in her country accidents free.
thank you NIC, you read my mind, i commented on PM thread that i was in the traffic last year and i got the lesson.
and second to Boston, yeah if you went there, just participate and accept the consequences, STOP WHINING people who felt hurt by the loud music and dancers on the street, i can't see any blood, how were you hurt?? where and when?? no blood?? LIARS.

“This is Qatar, why should it be any better in its national day?!
expect chaos, the only certainty!”
If you go to the bull run in Pamplona, you can't complain afterwards if you get injured or killed. (But it's soooo "exciting")
You have to be TOLD that there would be locals in their Land Cruisers on the Corniche on Qatar National Day and not all of them with Police Patrol?... If you need to be told that, then you also need to be told when you need to go to the toilet or you may end up soiling yourself...
The best comment so far.
We were here during the 2006 Asian Games and it was quite a traumatic experience. But we did learn a valuable lesson: avoid leaving your home during local celebration days.
Next time, if you don't wanna face any of these problems, stay away from the hot spots, stay home or even better take a break and leave Qatar for a few days.

Genesis... the comments you pointed out by stevil, alexa and exiledsaint were absolutely unacceptable...
Polished delivery with vile intent is much more dangerous than crass bad language... but the diplomatic nature of people's language often saves certain users from getting banned
Being a frequent on many threads on QL, I have seen Genesis and Bleu fend off a lot of criticism in a gracious manner... but not all of that is constructive criticism, some of it is borne with genuine ill-will
There are several kinds of expatriates... lets face it, almost all of us come here to earn a better quality of life and better source of income. But then what matters is the 'attitude' that you come here with...
There are those who want to learn and understand the local culture, respect it, blend in and revel in it... then there are those who carry an attitude wherein they want to 'civilize the locals'... its an imperialist hangover and for them, nothing is ever good enuff, anything different from what they are used to is torture... however small the adjustment and everything has to change to suit 'their' convenience...
I am listing again the comments pointed out by Genesis...

Well, in my state of India, agitating people are stopping public buses and trains for hours and the police can do little to stop this. Crowd does get unruly on critain occassions which commands alertness from citizens more than administrative control. Just a thought what would happen if all those who stayed at home rushed to corniche?

Many of you unfortunately if they see one thing bad then they think all things are bad.
SammyUK..lol about Notting Hill Carnival. That is one big street party (over million people attending) must say VERY WELL ORGANISED, Met police try their best to keep it safe.
Now lets get this straight. No one here is complaining about the very well organised Parade in the morning, The Dhows in the Sea, The fly pass in the air, The Khaleeji Sword Dances organised all over Doha, and even the Sailing Regatta that I took part in and not to forget the exceptional Finale with the Fire Works.
The problem was the flash mob, who spontaneously took to the streets without any Police escort or control in site. The occassion got the best of some Qataris youths who ended up doing silly things, I guess it must just be the occassion.
Since the Authorities completely failed to allocate routes for this spontaneous parades by Qatari Youths in their Landcruisers, that's where the problem was. If the Authorities had allocate special and dedicated routes for this parade of LC's I am sure it would be a lot more fun sitting in a LC moving at 5mph through Doha.
So what PM had highlighted was the failure of the Authorities to control such large parade of cars on the National Day and failure any kind of dedicated Routes and Traffic Management. The Authorities should have advise motorist of these routes, just like they advised the public on the no go areas and parking on the Corniche.
Well I hope next year they will manage the traffic better for the Sake of everyone who part took in the parade and the unfortunate souls who got stuck in the Traffic.

Constructive criticism is one thing, racially profiling a nation as savages & barbarians has different meaning. The same topic as been posted by PM is discussed in local public forums, with majority of locals speaking out against some negative scenes of the celebration & disorganization of traffic

When PM talks a lot of responsibility, she should have at least had the courtesy to stop the thread. Did she do that? Wasnt that part of her responsibility.
Why was it not done? That would have saved a lot of insults from flying around.
I wish some Qataris would open up to the idea that some people criticize as they care how Qatar is viewed by the outside world. For many expats this is their first Arab country to live in and many including myself want a good impression to be made, you don't want people looking at the society with they myths they learned at home. Its true that many expats never encouter the Qatari society so its nice to put their best food forward. I still think it would of been more fun for everyone had it been better organized and traffic dealt with. I did see people fighting due to the traffic jams that ensued.
Funny thing is some people were saying it happened bcoz booz and pre-marital relatiosn arenot allowed!!
And i was watching plce videos last night, where sailors in Russia had a parade and at the end of it, they were so drunk that they started beating each other, them breaking cars, putting trucks on fire and hitting riot police. Some westerners are just too full of themselves.
Eco that comment was immediately deleted.

Seriously -- if you were in a car that got hit by some yahoo who then drove off and left you there, wouldn't you be slightly irked too? Wouldn't you be wondering where the police were and why they weren't stopping similarly behaved individuals that you saw around you?
Honestly people, she's lived here for a long time by choice. She's posted many lovely things about life here and the local people/friends she has met here. She's not out to just stir the pot (as some other posters seem to be).
I'm more offended at the replies that some others have given -- using foul language, trying to obfuscate the issue by responding with 'oh yeah? well you westerners shoot smack and whore around with prostitutes on your birthdays' kind of comments.
Nobody is saying Qatar isn't a lovely place to live for the most part. The vast majority of us expats have made our choice, and we've chosen (as Veris said) to endure the minor inconvenience of some things as a trade-off for a better job/salary/standard of living/whatever.
That doesn't mean living in Qatar is nirvana, or that we can't spout off when something irritates or frustrates us. We complain about things that we think need fixing when we're back home, when we travel, and while we live here.
PM was simply pointing out that she thought there wasn't enough of a presence of traffic police and security forces, and that those who were out there weren't doing much to control the rowdy behavior of many youths who were driving/behaving dangerously.
She's free to speak her mind.

WELL DONE QATARIS PEOPLE AND HAPPY LIFE TO YOU ALL. ALLAH YOSTORKOM!
Im sick of all the intollerance from both sides, from one side people who criticizes all from Qatar but still stay around, on the other side people who criticizes all about western, but still stick to western movies, tv shows and even lifestyles...
so for both
If dont like Qatar...GO HOME !!!
If dont like Western, live like amish do ... no tech no movies, nothing from modern western lifestyle....
Apart from the small inconvenience of traffic jam, I found the National Day celebrations absolutely fine. Yes, people get rowdy in the wee hours, but that is true for all countries. At least here people are not drunk. Last year, I had my vacation on July month in UK and it was bright even at 10 PM. But everyone advised us not to go outside after 8 especially on weekends.
Qatar has the some of the best figures in criminal activities. This is one of the safest places on earth. If someone cannot bear traffic jam for few hours since there is a celebration going on streets, you have two options – Stay indoors or don’t stay at all.
Yes a very small percentage of people get unruly in all celebrations. But it is still better in Qatar than being in a place where English football match is going. Have some courtesy to the life you enjoy most time of the year and stop criticizing.
It said:
I think PM needs to go to London and experience Notting Hill Carnival lool if she thinks that Qatars national day was bad, spraying cars and sitting on roofs... imagine crowds of thousands of drunk people, fights breaking out, people getting stabbed... Damn get over yourself PM...
now lets see if it gets on facebook and newspaper.
not everything is Unacceptable what PM has mentioned, but there's a simple solution for it,, "Don't go out if you can't stand it..can't you skip a day?!!"
I do agree with most of what Qatariah-luv has written. Also, i'v experienced myself how arabs are treated in Western Countries.
moreover,,Qatar's traffic laws are strict & all tht mentioned by PM is not a daily bread..Iam sure, its not difficult for one to accept it for just once a year when most of the population enjoy it.

There was other stuff too but i aint putting it up here... it was just about pm... lol she pissed off a lot of people... opps
I ddnt find anything wrong in them celebrating too!!!!!
Rightly said, every country celebrates its special day in a way or the other. come and see the holy in India lol
I was on the road stuck, with ma family.. there were young Qataris allover spraying foams ..etc. They never botherd us, rather we enjoyed watching their pranks. They were having a great time. wht the hell!!! Why they are not suppose to have fun on a special day??, and why you dont like it when others do?? grow up
I totally agree to Verisi, on ;; expats make too much fuss on silly things out here''..Very well said... You may stay at home next time.I will surely be on the road to see them having fun.

and what did it say?
I cant believe Pm's thread got broadcast on my blackberry like 3 times by angry Qatari people... Dizzzamm !
verisimilitude and pearl of qatar , well-said!
^^^ No, not a good number of people are under the influence of something here in Doha. That is an inncorrect fallacy.
What Qatariyah is saying is valid, inwhich people celebrate in "civilized" Western countries by drinking, sex, and other forms of behaviors.
Of coure not all Western people do that. I have Western relatives, and certainly they do not engage in that behavior.
Yes, there are Qataris who drink, blah blah blah, but that does not have to do with the topic discussed here. People's behaivior here is nothing compared to what people do in the streets of Europe or the US on special occasions--or even on NORMAL DAYS, where going out means you have a chance of getting killed.
Really, enough of the "state-controlled newspapers" debate which everyone writes about, as if we are living in a lawless jungle with blindfolds. Its getting too old.
The point is WE as Qataris and Expats who love Qatar were attacked in this stupid site, and we reply back.
The only reason I became member was to reply to some stupid posts made by well, children.

The National Day celebrations may have been wild but it was fun... the unruly teenagers were a respite for me while I waited in the car for the traffic to move
Eventually, it was one of the teenagers who made way so that the traffic could move or we would have been stuck there a whole while longer
I also agree with the premise that some expatriates make too much of a fuss over silly things... there are plenty of those here in Qatar Living
One's that consider little adjustments they are expected to make to fit in with the local society akin to some kind of martyrdom they are making for the sake of the development of this country... baloney...
I've been an expatriate all my life... I won't say I love everything in Qatar. But this is one of the best places in the world where I would want my family and I to be in...
The sacrifices or adjustments that I need to make to live here in my view are almost inconsequential when I consider all the conveniences that I am offered...
Well said Qatariah-luv! I am a western expat. My nieces are visiting Qatar for the first time. They and my 2 daughters were in the thick of the action on the Corniche on Thursady evening and also with the fireworks and parade on Friday. I was thrilled that they could have had such a fun experience- to see the vibrant soul of the Qatari's.They were safe and had the time of their lives. Thank you Qatar for a fantastic celebration. We were very excited.
@ Qatariah-luv,because of course,"crack & pot in night clubs" is something good Qatari boys (& dare i say girls!) never indulge in right???...please don't get me wrong,i agree fully that you have very valid points in your post above...EXCEPT for this usual "holier than thou,we don't indulge in any vices" stand...would you disagree with me if i claimed that a good number of young Qatari guys were under the influence of various substances on national day evening like they tend to be on most days?...you probably would which means you live in denial like a large % of your brothers & sisters which makes it difficult for me to take you seriously, fair enough?...young Qataris were enjoying themselves on national day just like young people in different parts of the world would, their mode of expressing that celebration is their choice,i was out on friday evening & i did get caught in traffic for a bit but nobody bothered me...but please please,if you want to be taken seriously, stop bringing up this "drugs/alcohol/prostitution/western vices" story,i know as well as you & loads of others that a very significant % of young Qatari boys drink,do drugs & indulge in prostitution just like certain segments of young populations anywhere in the world, just because nothing appears in the state-controlled newspapers & it's a taboo subject to talk about & people pretend it doesn't happen,DOES NOT mean it doesn't & doesn't change the fact that it does,so please, let's be realistic if we are to truly debate this...
Qatariyah thanks for this post. Really, what PM said in the other post outraged a lot of Qataris and expats who were very angry at what she said. Posts like that really show the true side of a person--and how dark it can get.
I just hope racism and hatred against all people will stop, cause really, it is not the best way to go. Live life and enjoy it to the fullest.
People like PM do not actually move a single hair in my body, but in the end, she has made a fool of herself--and if she does not like living in this great country, well... the airport is pretty close to West Bay!
Qatariyah, I appreciated your comments here and the previous threads, and keep raising our heads high!
Every each are equivalent to a silly act whether if its in qatar, spain, thailand or india. And one reason for people to act wild is just what suprise many of the expats in this land of honour and dignity. Some how hard comment or hard talk are bitter pills to swallow to some, and as usual always, this is QL discussion thread.
qatar is the most safest country.
may allah bless qatar and its people.
I agree with Qatariah-Luv 100%.
In other countries they make activities worse than what was done in Qatar (take Spain as an example) and here i find it very normal. I was on the corniche on thursday and the celebrations were very friendly and yes they published in the newspaper to avoid some streets on the national day because of traffic jam.
Tell that to your mates buddy
has a good and bad pictures..But Qatar is the country having a lot of good features.. It is just we have to decide to see positive or bad.. I prefer to be on positive side always..

i do agree that qatar is a safe country, for now. to say that you are not ready for changes is true. but your youngsters are crying out loud for changes. they are shhowing it in a way they can.
taking the other thread negatively is but human, if you are wise, you will take that as a wake up call.
youngsters are not into your culture or in any culture. i am not saying your youngsters are bad. everywhere in the world youngsters wants changes, wants freedom, wants to explore. instead of defending, put your acts together. guide and educate them before its too late.
they don't know why they are celebrating, therefore they don't know how to celebrate. old folks are confused for having different dates of national day. i guess start from there.
progress
i always give Qatar my gratitude and due respect....i earn my living here, feed, cloth, and educate my children....
as what my GM once told me.....if ur an expat no matter what level you are, u maybe a labourer or ceo....we are all the same...we come to Qatar because we dont earn what we are earning here back home....
Despite the racist comments made by many in the other thread. You must understand some are "Trolls" who feeds in posting controversial comments while others are just consumed by their own prejudice. I don't know how this got blown out of proportion. Maybe because of the "Blackberry" broadcast message received last night encountering everyone to read the thread & written posts.
You made some valid points, and i hope this get debated in an intellectual manner without turning it into culture based bashing of one another
And youngsters (I really doubt they were Qataris as I used to see other Arabs do such almost everyday they wanna 'celebrate') throwing plastic bottles on them is just plain rude.
It's not about changing their attitude. It's about knowing how 'they' feel about what they usually do. It really isn't our conduct to throw plastic bottles on 'them' or anyone, specially when they say 'Bakla' on Filipinos, 'Mallu' on Indians, 'Pathan' on Pakistanis, or such typical nationality 'words' after throwing the bottles...

To be honest i had more fun on the national day than eid...!!

God Bless Everybody...
what stupid is that you don't read newspapers..it shows the area of the crowed and which streets and areas it will be in so you can avoid it. And what brings what I mentioned up, you better read Shame on Qatar National Day article and all the replies cuz my post is in reply to that...god u have a lot of reading to do!
Im suprised why is pot, crack and prostitution comming up with the celebration of national day....
U think Qatar is free from all these???
As you said people celebrate all over the world in their own way but i have never seen crowds dancing in the middle of the road and blocking traffic.... that's stupid.
Aana free, jaana free,
Pakde gaye tho khana free.
I'm glad you enjoyed it A_prodigy! really happy to have positive, understanding people like you here! :)
U made a lot of valid points, we went to have dinner the night before national day and we got caught with the crowds no body bothered us and we didn't feel threatened in anyway, shape, or form.
It got a bit rowdy around 10 p.m. but that happens every where like you said, I have been to many countries and I have seen far worse.
On the contrary people were waving at us from both sides of the road, and some even noticed that neither us or our prado was prepared for the occasion, a girl gave us a flag, and one guy even offered to walk across the road and hand us one!
It was very enjoyable and I admit we had music on full blast just like every body else did, it was all pure fun and the kids did get down and dance in the middle of the street but it was only when the traffic was congested and they weren't holding anybody up, besides National day was a public holiday so we didn't mind staying up late for a change and taking part in the festivities.
