READ-ME: Current Threats

William Boot
By William Boot

There is currently an increased threat of terrorist action in Doha, with specific information about threats to named hotels in the city.

The question is, do you believe me? You see, no one will officially say that security has been increased at the hotels, or state the reason for the increased security.

I've been told by members of staff from two separate hotels that security has been tightened in response to specific threats. The embassies will certainly have been informed about the threats, so why no warnings?

Why is it that Doha residents have to rely on gossip and hearsay in order to protect themselves?

i noticed hightened security at one hotel but they still dont stop you when the metal detector beeps bc of your belt or phone or whatever. The US embasy is so parinoid too, i am an american and I still crosscheck warnings against the brit embassy website b4 travel or something like that

PM - "...have been told by someone highly placed in security that the most effective security is that which you don't see and there is plenty of that here."

That's what I heard as well. We just take reasonable precautions but no need to be paranoid.

nothing from the british embassy ...

the 5 stars hotel that i frequent for my exercise class did not tightened up the security either. After the marriot bombing in Jakarta, they used to check my car when i reach the drive way, and the always checked my bags when i entered the main entrance.

Now NOTHING !!!

I know they now make memberships in clubs in Doha but this one is just silly.

They should target Dubai first. LOL

William .. I was in a compound in Saudi which was attacked even though all compounds were on alert and the threat was real..

I personaly don't believe that the threat is higher today than last year in Qatar. If the "agencies" have wind of something, then I am sure they are taking measures to mitigate the risks.

There are guidelines for evaluating how "specific" and "credible" a threat is.

It is illegal for the US Embassy to have received a terrorism warning and NOT pass it along. Believe me, after Pan Am 103, when they did have a warning and used it only internally, they won't violate the rule. If the US Embassy in Doha has gotten a specific threat they would have issued a warning.

If there have been threats made about specific hotels, some people may choose to ignore the threats, whereas others may choose to stay at home.

If there is no danger, why increase security? If there is a slight danger, why wouldn't you inform the public?

My guess is that the authorities are worried the hotels will be emptied if they make a statement. Well, I don't care about keeping the hotels' restaurants full - I want enough information so that I can make a balanced decision about the safety of my family.

And, of course, the newspapers are again complicit in the conspiracy of silence.
