hi everyone,

i am going for a job interview next week for a directing post with al jazeera. i've been reading up from the post here, to find information about Qatar...the part about the harressment from the men (not saying all local men are bad)...given to asian women scares me!! i am from singapore, i would like to know if anyone...has any info

1) salary + benefits (i know its tax free)..no idea whats the salary range for media/tv industry in qatar

2)  transportation...especially public (taxis-cheap??) - i dont drive...plus its darn difficult to pass driving here in singapore...and its not cheap owning a car (small space area) ..AND gd trpt system, hence i got lazy abt getting a licence :P:P

3) it is easy and cheap to pass the driving licence

4) woman- how they dress...

5) work environment

6) telephone, cable, internet...how much does it cost?

7) furniture and electrical appliances? standard 3 pin (like those in UK..same as in singapore) or 2 pin plug??

8) any animal shelter? i love animals...cant possibly bring my cats with me :( :(

pls any information esp the 1st one will be much appreaciated...

terimakasih & thank you!!

This isn't a new query guys. Check the date on the original post.

This thread has been resurrected by jojo, for some reason, with a randm, unrelated question about smoking.

Is it true that folks in Qatar smokes everywhere resturants, shopping centers, etc ... even in places that have a no smoking sign ?

This is one thing that I particulary have low tolerance to. Don;t want to be breathing in the seond hand smoke.

Tell me what you know...

My Singaporean friend complain that Singapore is too clean? What the 'hell'??? :-) How on earth can you complain that their country too clean???

Another Singaporean family i know who works for QP, the husband complain that he is bored here because the life style is too laid back. Unlike in Singapore that you have to compete with everything, then people started to developed 'kiasu' behaviour lol ...

About cat ... yes the QAWS will more than happy to have you as their volunteer ... the need more people to help out.

u will hv to drive in Doha. Taxis is a pain and unreliable, and in the summer you will not want to stand on the road side to flag them down.

Car is cheap compare what u are paying in Singapore ( we lived there for 2 yrs before we came here).

Dont compare Doha with Singapore, take it living here as an experience, by then when u go home you will really greatfull with what you have in Singapore :-)

Yes, definitely go to QAWS, don't bother with the pet shops at all.

If you decide to get a cat here please please please adopt from www.qaws.org and do NOT buy from a pet shop.

1) Minimum salary should be in the range of $5000-6000. You should get housing or a housing allowance, medical insurance, maybe transportation allowance.

2) If you don't drive you're in trouble. In the long run taxis won't be cheap and they're not dependable, i.e. they don't come to pick you up when you expect them to arrive and you don't want to wait for 20 mins or half an hour for one to appear in the street, especially when it's over 35 degrees.

3) Take a few lessons and if you're nice to the examiner you should pass.

4) Modern dress; blouses, skirts, slacks, jeans. No cleavage, no minis.

5) Cool and air-conditioned. Assuming you'll be working for Jazeera International it's a nice modern place with things still falling into place, sometimes literally.

6) 2 Mbps DSL tops out at just over $100/month. Avoid local cable and get yourself a satellite receiver with subscription to Showtime, $60-$120/month depending upon the package. Mobiles are either prepaid or postpaid.

7) Yes, 3-pin UK-type plug.

8) Qatar Animal Welfare Society + pet shops.

Good Luck
