Is Qatar out of Coins?

I have noticed that many businesses here in Qatar instead of giving the proper change back on a purchase, they try to give a candy or some gum. And the prices are always conveniently priced at a little over .50. The clerk always says sorry Sr. We have no change or the boss tells us to give the gum. It’s a great way for them to earn extra. When they offer me the gum I tell them I will use my ATM card

I have made it a point if I don't get change at the larger outlets (like Carrefour or FFC or Lulu) to go to the manager's office and complain on my way out - it's not the cashier's fault it's management and until and unless we all complain to managment nothing will change

How much change is lying unused in everyone's home??

If you don't put the coins back in circulation then there will always be a shortage..

Most of the times they deliberately do not give change. It's the best way to earn millions for these big outlets. Yes, by the end of the month, all those small change make up to thousand of Riyal and after and after 1 year the money comes in 7 figures.

It’s also the best way to SELL those crapy gum or biscuit that people don’t buy. So it’s a WIN WIN situation for the business.

So next time use your credit/debit card or have the change ready.

You beat them by offering a 50 dirhams and getting 1 riyal back!

and I refused to accept those candies.

I kept leaving the store with .50 dirhams change unclaimed. That lasted for a week. The next week, I went in to buy PEPSI & water...and I went straight to the door. The storekeeper stopped me and ssaid I didn't paid for it....so I told him: "YOU HAVEN'T RETURNED MY CHANGE which is QAR2.50 riyals...and the PEPSI AND WATER costs the same, WE'RE QUITS.

He scratched his head and let me go. From then on, they always have change/coins for me ;P

the little corner shop next to me has a supply of coins and will always give change without me having to ask, unlike the supermarkets who never give coin change...

Three months after my arrival i realized that there are coins in circulation. I didn't know until then they had coins :)

I have never received any coins even in big supermarkets :)) and i never thought why there are no coins since i only count the paper :)))

Wow. I will pay more attention now.

You're right, the notes come from the UK.

I don't think it's a ploy by the menial cashiers, because they charge that mint/ candy to your bill. It's like you bought that candy to round off the amount.

I think the bank notes are made in Wales if memory serves me right.

most of the coins would be lying around our homes. collect it and put it back in circulation

It truly is a ploy,... I would belive the govt of Qatar has and is capable of minting sufficient supply of coins but it is the shopkeepers who try to earn extra cash who resort to this technique.

Its a ploy by the shop keepers or workers to make some extra cash..

Back home the Mint in SA is also a landmark that gives tours and educational lectures. They had the most amazing restaurant there too...

Isn't the place where they make coins called mint? Now they are giving mint instead of coins at the shop.

By anonymous• 24 Nov 2010 23:15

Seriously, how hard can it be to mint more coins???...highest GDP on the planet but no coins...typical...

Here is the thing; the shopkeepers are brainless idiots!

Why?

Take my local shop for example.

There are no price tags on anything. You have to ask them 'how much is this'. I don't know the prices of anything in there.

So when you go to pay, WHY tell you 11.50, with gum, just say 12 bloody riyals! How the hell am I going to know?!! That way I won't get annoyed at thinking I am losing money.

They could do this without causing half the arguments.

Do I want to pay more for my shopping? No.

But I have never been into a shop and said '20 riyals? I am SURE my bill is 19.50'.

They are so stupid.

Simple solution, if they ask YOU for coins, give them cheap candy. If they can give it to you instead of money, you can give it to them, non?

By rEzyz• 24 Nov 2010 21:47

they give us candy to reset mood, which switches off after paying bulky bill~!~

Quite funny that it is always the paying customer who is on the losing end. Why not offer one customer the chewing gum and the next one the 1 Riyal? I carry a little wallet full of coins with me - because I do NOT want any of that crappy chewy or minty candy they want to give me.
