thats right drmana, yours is also one of the solutions..

btw, the first is generally considered from the left unless ofcourse you are writing arabic or urdu or the like..

rishimba, I agree : norwegian lives in the first house. But does the riddle specify 1st house from left or right? No, it doesn't.....so I am right as well. As per my sequence, norwegian lives in the first house from right. Hence, all conditions fulfilled.

I've encountered this riddle a lot of times and tried answering it numerous times so I already knew the answer but I keep on forgetting that's why I have answered it "numerous" times. Haha... I even sketched it on a piece of paper..

anonymous

drmana, i took nearly 30 minutes to get it and then i cross checked all the conditions...

norwegian lives in the first house..thats one of the condition, so it has to be yellow.

rishimba, why is my sequence wrong? Does it cause mismatch of any of the given facts? If not, why the sequence I got should be considered wrong?

drmana, you are right, the german keeps the fish..

but the order of the houses is a bit incorrect.

it should be in the order of ( from left to right): yellow, blue, red. green, white.

ok, my conclusions:

1.Yellow house has Norwegian, who drinks water, smokes Dunhill and rears Cats.

2. Blue house has Dane who drinks Tea, smokes Blends, and has Horses

3. Red house has Brit who drinks Milk, Smokes Pall Mall and has Birds

4. White house has Swede who drinks Beer, smokes Blue Master and has Dogs

5. Green House has German, who drinks Coffee, smokes Prince and has FISH.

So the German owns the Fish.

Is this correct?

I know the answer , but I can't tell because I don't want anybody to feel bad :P

It's not really that difficult. The part about Einstein's quote was probably bogus. But still it was fun.

I am not sure is ALBERT EINSTEIN WROTE THIS RIDDLE EARLY DURING THE 19th CENTURY. and doubt that HE SAID THAT 98% OF THE WORLD POPULATION WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SOLVE IT...

I have solved hundreds of similar problems.. as a matter of fact, I used to love this type of puzzles...

so in my spear time i will definitely try to revive this one of my hobbies.. :)

So are we right or wrong? What is the answer?

"It is better to be hated for what you are than being loved for what you are not."

deepb

Yep, my bad drmana. It works if you solve from right to left also. But the house order changes. From left to right it will be Green, White, Red , Blue and Yellow in that case.

By deepb• 7 Apr 2010 12:28

I remember struggling with the green white and green coffee combo for a while. Let me check if it can be done from right to left. Give me half an hour.

By drmana• 7 Apr 2010 12:07
drmana

why would that be so deepb? In the sequence I arrived at, green house is still on the left of white house.....

"It is better to be hated for what you are than being loved for what you are not."

By deepb• 7 Apr 2010 11:54
deepb

drmana, If first house starts from right then clue no.4 green house is on left of white house gets fumbled and you will not arrive at the answer.

By drmana• 7 Apr 2010 11:52
drmana

its not just the sequence of house that should fit in the riddle, isn't it?

"It is better to be hated for what you are than being loved for what you are not."

Yellow house, Blue house, Red House, Green House, White House.

By drmana• 7 Apr 2010 11:37
drmana

deepb, first house from which side.

as per me, Norwegian does live in the Yellow house which is first house from right.....

"It is better to be hated for what you are than being loved for what you are not."

By deepb• 7 Apr 2010 11:34
deepb

No drmana.

the norweigan lives in the first house so He lives in the yellow house.

The houses are in this order - Yellow, Blue, Red , Green, White.

By drmana• 7 Apr 2010 11:29
