Pork Bacon and Sausage at QDC Qatar

xtian001
By xtian001

It seems Pork Bacon Sausages are already available in QDC Qatar! Can anybody confirm?

EDIT: It's confirmed! A pack of 10 sausages cost 28QR . Same goes for a pack of Pork Bacon (don't know how many grams). It seems people have bought lots today and stocks seems to be dwindling. It might be chaos tomorrow at QDC as people get to know the availability of Pork products. Not sure if I want to be there tomorrow. When will the Pork slabs arrive? Really soon it seems. Since Pork products are already being made available in Doha, the Pork cuts are soon to follow. Might wait till the dust settles.

Quagmire, I'm with you - some people take pride in saying they are easterners, they hate the western culture, but they would still refuse to enter into these countries with a non-western passport... I'm just wondering... WHY???????????? LOL!

Sorry, I have to laugh at that!

What kind of a farm was that then, didn't you have grates that it fell through and the food was put in a trough?

What about the chickens, did you see them scratching about in the dirt and eating their own poop, or did you miss that bit?

"When are they going to start selling horse though? Now that is really tasty. And a bit of dog for the Koreans and Vietnamese wouldn't go a miss either. I wouldn't eat it but if they want to its up to them, it is a free country after all."

I think the issue with those is that they aren't readily available for export/import. Dog farms in Korea and Vietnam are VERY small (as only a few places sell dog meat), and the conditions aren't sanitary by most standards.

Also, again, I don't believe there's a lot of horses farmed for meat, at least not to provide enough to export.

Dude seriously? Am I taking advice from someone who has Quagmire as their icon? Yeah, I don't think so! Not that I need to prove where I'm from..I was born and raised in Canada and have lived in England for the past 7 years before arriving in Doha. As for pigs, I have had the unfortunate task of watching over them at my Uncles farm in Canada when I was a teen, and let me tell you-- NEVER want to do that again. They do eat their own excrement and also have no problems rolling around in it.

As a educated individual, I would expect you to have better taste in your choice of TV shows. Family Guy..very classy.

You obviously weren't born in Canada or Britain!

Pigs don't eat their own poop! who told you that? LOL they are pretty clean animals actually. It's just the meat doesn't keep as well in the heat (i.e. before refrigerators were invented), so in olden times people got ill from eating it.

I know for a fact that chickens, prawns and (some) sea food eat excrement and I bet you have eaten all of them! On my Uncles farm, I often saw the cows eating grass growing through the middle of a cow pat!

What do you think about that then?

Come on, tell us, what country were you born in?

Good news people.Welcome to 2011 Qatar!  Keep on moving with the times.Choice = freedom; freedom = Choice. When are they going to start selling horse though? Now that is really tasty.  And a bit of dog for the Koreans and Vietnamese wouldn't go a miss either.  I wouldn't eat it but if they want to its up to them, it is a free country after [email protected] - That is just an old story book, it's not true. It was made up to supress the masses, whilst the rich and powerful get richer and more powerful at the expense of the gullable and weak (check your history books over the last few tens of thousand years, or download the movie "Zeitgeist" and watch that). Nobody believes that stuff any more, same as nobody believes in ghosts and witches and black magic, its all lies. We know the world isn't flat any more and that it is millions of years old.Times have changed sunshine - get over it.  We are all a lot smarter and more educated now, so we don't fall for "legends" and "old wives tales" anymore.  knowledge is power dude, not clinging on to old myths of the past.  One word: DARWIN.  If this comes as a shock to you, climb back into your cave. You can believe what you want.  I respect your choice but respectfully dissagree.  I suggest you do the same mate.  I even think it says that in the "big made up story book", too.  Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. Sound familiar?Feel free to pop over and have a chat about it over a bacon sandwich and a beer, in the mean time stop making a fool of yourself.Cheers.

C/Brit - you so massively contradicted yourself it is positively hilarious

'Generalizing about a people is the most narrow-minded thing you can do...'

I assume when you said the following:

'Also...you are what you eat. So oink oink'

Did you mean, if you eat pork then you must be a pig - if this is not your meaning, please explain?

Also, your reasoning is very faulty but I will just say this, do you eat chicken - hope this does not upset you too much but most chicken purchased here not only will sit in its own faeces but their own urine too.

If I wanted I would go on to say that all Hindus are piss heads that worship everything under the sun..but I'm not as pathetic as you. As for Pork, anything that eats and rolls in its own feces is not good enough to be consumed. I know a lot of non Muslim individuals who prefer not to eat the meat because of how unsanitary its living habits are. Chew on that.

Discrimination against people is Haram.I refer to labour law and the poor treatment of labourers who has helped to develp Qatar.

Disrespect for the life of other humans is Haram. I refer to the recless driving and speeding on the roads.

Expats are here to help to build this country and to educate the children.

We turn a blind eye towards the above mentioned so those who are SO against PORK can turn a blind eye.

If you don't drink then you would not see any of the pork right.

If I don't invite you to my house you wont see the pork.

So all that I can say...get a life!! Let us expats enjoy our pork.

There is so much 'haram' stuff going on in Qatar and all the devotess can worry about is someone who eats something that they need never come into contact with and does not affect them in any way whatsoever.

That is one messed up situation

Yes it is certainly very discriminating. My husband's BIL was staying in a labor accommodation sometime back and was appalled to see certain guys actually downing bottles of eau d cologne(the non fragrance kind in particular) why such differentiation? To think a rich Muslim can get an alcoholic beverage with ease in a Muslim country but a lower paid non Muslim can't seems very very messed up to me!

By Good old joe• 22 Nov 2011 19:54
Good old joe

Well said Fatimah - and is it not haram that some guys can buy and drink but others are not allowed to get anywhere close to or into QDC to buy a bottle nor to drink and then they are accused of damaging their liver, etc by getting by with cologne, etc.

You being a non Muslim, you don't understand and I being a Muslim I too don't understand! Seriously all I can tell you is that don't judge Islam by the twisted acts of many Muslims. Pork is as Haraam as alcohol, reckless driving which endangers lives is actually an act against faith itself, smoking which can cause death and illness is haraam too, and yet people do so...why? Perhaps they simply assume they will be forgiven for all they do of haraam just by claiming to be Muslims which is a very wrong way to think!

We as Muslims don't deny that pork was maybe allowed for other faiths sent by our Lord but then He(God) made it forbidden for us. Similarly even alcohol was allowed for all the previous faiths but forbidden for us.Why? God alone really knows why!

According to Islam the "apple" bit was a myth. Adam(Peace be upon him) who was the first man and Prophet was forbidden a fruit of a certain tree in Paradise but what this fruit was is unknown to us though people have guessed it to be "apple" or even "pomegranate" like. And this "haraam" was for him and Eve only.

Please note following:-

1) Access to QDC is still restricted to liquor permit holders.

2) We need the liquor permit to create an invoice.

3) No other permit is necessary.

4) The value of pork purchases is NOT deducted from your permit value.

5) There is no limit on how much you can purchase.

6) The current range is restricted to frozen smoked & un-smoked back & streaky bacon and 3 types of sausage (plain, Lincolnshire & Cumberland).

7) All packs (400gms for bacon & 454gms for sausages) are QR28 per pack.

8) Frozen items like chops, joints and belly pork will be here in about 1 month.

9) A chilled Italian range of Salami, Parma Ham etc is coming by air freight and should be here within 7-10 days.

10) We hope to get some chilled ham & gammon joints by air in time for Christmas, but we are still negotiating prices on this.

Please note that we sold 10% of the first container in 4 hours yesterday, but don't worry the 2nd container is arriving in the port today.

We will be selling freezer bags from today, but I recommend you bring a cold box with you when shopping for pork.

As you will discover we do not really have space for this new venture, so please bear with us if the crowd in the cold room is too much and the queues too long. I recommend you avoid Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays if you want to avoid the queues.

Please note we will be building an extension to house this new product range, but this will take at least 6-8 months to complete. We are also planning a separate shop on The Pearl (next to the new liquor shop) but again this is at least 8 months away. The new liquor shop on The Pearl should open by end of January 2012.

If you are a Muslim then know, brother, its not for us to give dawah to Non Muslims using their own religion. This is not the way of our Prophet and may very well be very sinful for us. We can only tell them about Islam and that too only call them to Thawheed first. Until and unless they are Muslims we are not supposed to tell them halaal and haraam as those are all secondary.

Just want to say your knowledge of Islam amazes me.. you have actually made a great effort in knowing your stuff and you don't argue in vain without facts...keep it up! And it is true we do believe in all the holy books of each Prophets' but we follow only the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet as that was the religion chosen by God for us, the followers of Muhammad, our final Prophet.

As Muslims its not for us to tell disbelievers of Islam what they can eat and what they can't.. as long as they remain non Muslims, things that are impermissible for us are not forbidden for them.Besides if it is about halaal and haraam then our advice should be for our fellow Muslims who indulge in many haraam acts daily but yet think they are somehow excused.Pork has only now arrived in Qatar and most likely will be consumed by non Muslims yet alcohol has been available for ages and is fearlessly consumed by Muslims too specially those who should know better(ie the ones who are blessed with being fluent in Arabic) So how can we Muslims act all upset and offended now?

By fubar• 22 Nov 2011 16:18

If being Muslim means spending all day on internet forums peddling rubbish about bacteria in pork, and demeaning others, I'm not interested.

At least they have the wisdom to respect other people and their beliefs (or their choice not to have beliefs).

Muslims believe that the Bible was corrupted. So you already have that answer yourself.

By Miss Mimi• 22 Nov 2011 15:39
Miss Mimi

Christians believe that some of the Old Testament is the word of God, but not all of it. They believe that it was corrupted in the 2000 odd years between it and the New Testament. The reason that it is included in the Bible is because it gives us our history, the book of Genesis, Noah, Job, Moses, etc. However, only the words of Jesus are the true words of God, so Christians only believe what Jesus confirmed to be true, like the ten commandments.

By Miss Mimi• 22 Nov 2011 15:34
Miss Mimi

No, people were mistaken. People made up laws that were not Gods, like not allowing men who had been castrated to enter a temple, or banishing people who had been dismembered to hell. People misunderstood what God wanted, and Jesus was sent to correct them.

Surinder is like an American Republican Presidential Candidate.

He's simply rote learned some talking points.

He doesn't possess the intellectual depth to move beyond them - and when someone challenges him he just resorts to reframing the question back to something that he think he knows just a little bit about.

Sad thing is he thinks if he does this long enough he will convince us that he's right.

Whereas all he's doing is convincing us that he's an ignorant, arrogant, vacuous fool.

By Miss Mimi• 22 Nov 2011 15:30

Also, I should clarify that Christians don't necessarily believe that the rules in Deuteronomy and Leviticus are the words of God. The only rules from the old testament that the Christians believe in are the 10 commandments. Deuteronomy and Leviticus are more historical laws passed on through the Jews, not the words of God. Hence why Jesus was sent to correct them.

Surinder you do understand that Christians aren't Muslims right?

By Miss Mimi• 22 Nov 2011 15:16
Miss Mimi

Neither was wrong, Jesus was sent by God and spoke for God, as Christians believe he was the son of God. God communicated through him the same as he spoke through Mohammed.

Jesus didn't request for a correction, he came to spread God's word to more people than just the Israelites (Jews). And to correct things that the Israelites had been doing wrong (as Christians believe that God's original messages to Moses were corrupted and misinterpreted over time, again, the same way the Muslims believe that the Bible has been corrupted, the Christians believe the Old Testament was corrupted).

But you have made amendments surinder. The Quran allows shellfish, camel and rabbit to be eaten, which are strictly banned in the Old testament, which Muslims also consider to be a Holy Book and the words of Moses. Muslims have also banned alcohol, which isn't banned in the Old or New Testament. So obviously Muslims also found the need to change things.

PORK UPDATE

Guys this is as official as it gets from the QDC manager

############################################

Please note following:-

... 1) Access to QDC is still restricted to liquor permit holders.

2) We need the liquor permit to create an invoice.

3) No other permit is necessary.

4) The value of pork purchases is NOT deducted from your permit value.

5) There is no limit on how much you can purchase.

6) The current range is restricted to frozen smoked & unsmoked back & streaky bacon and 3 types of sausage (plain, Lincolnshire & Cumberland).

Best regards

Colin

QDC: Pork now available for purchase in Qatar

Pork meat is now available in Qatar, an employee at the Qatar Distribution Company has confirmed.

As a conservative Muslim country, Qatar has previously limited access to alcohol and completely banned pork meat in the country, as both products are considered haram, or unlawful, in Islam.

But rumors have been swirling for months that QDC, the only place where expats can purchase alcohol for home consumption, would begin selling the previously forbidden meat at its Doha location.

There’s also talk of a QDC opening on the Pearl in early 2012, which will sell both alcohol and pork.

Sales of pork bacon and sausage began two days ago, the QDC employee told Doha News. He did not clarify whether the meat would require a permit for purchase or be sold on a quota card, like alcohol is.

But customers said all that is needed is an alcohol permit to enter QDC, which only non-Muslims are presumably allowed to hold.

On Qatar Living, the development has already sparked excitement and dismay among Qatar residents.

Commenter qatarisAWESOME said:

SeriouslY?? …whats next? legalization of abortion in qatar??

User Alumnar said:

A pack of 8 sausages costs 28 Riyals. Available regular, cumberland and lincolnshire. Bacon: smoked or non-smoked, both in rashers or thick slices. Each pack 28 Riyals too. Expensive but available! I bet there is none left by tomorrow - QDC looked worse than Lulu on weekends at 4pm ;)

Commenter initiator said:

They should not sell it. It only appeals to some expatriates in Qatar, albeit a tiny percentage of them, and like any country in the world it is reasonable enough to expect some degree of respect for the local laws and norms. Qatar is a pretty liberal place any ways, and the people who do eat pork, will not be giving up too much in other ways by not eating it.

For those who are shocked and concerned about diseases from pigs... don't be:

a) TRICHINELLA SPIRATIS ( Trichina worms )

It is the most dangerous parasite to man ( Rheumatism and muscular pain). No one

is immune from this disease and there is no cure.

Actually - occurring in rats, pigs, bears and humans.

During 1997-2001, the incidence decreased to a median of 12 cases annually, with NO REPORTED DEATHS.

So I call B.S. on that one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichinella_spiralis

b) TAENIA SOLIUM ( Pork tape worm )

The worm causes malnourishment of the person leading

to anemia, diarrhea, extreme depression melancholia and

digestive disturbances. They grow and encapsulate, inducing pressure to the

system around, resulting in dangerous diseases (diarrhea,

digestive disorder, anemia, chronic invalidation).

Actually - It is important to note that human cysticercosis is acquired by ingesting T. solium eggs shed in the feces of a human tapeworm carrier via gravid proglottids, and thus CAN occur in populations that neither eat pork nor share environments with pigs, although, as stated, the completion of thelife cycle can occur only where humans live in close contact with pigs and eat pork.

So I call B.S. on that one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taenia_solium

b) ROUND WORMS

Examples: Ascaris, which may lead to digestive

disturbances, appendicitis, obstructive jaundice.

Actually - Ascaris suum, also known as large roundworm of pigs, is a parasitic nematode that causes ascariasis in pigs. Until recently it was believed that Ascaris suum could also infect humans; however, it has now been established that humans are affected by a related parasite, Ascaris lumbricoides.

So I call B.S. on that one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascaris_suum

c) HOOK WORMS

Examples:Ancylostomiasis, which may lead to

anemia, oedema, heart failure or retarded

growth ( mental and physical), tuberculosis,

diarrhea and typhoid.

Actually - The infection is usually contracted by persons walking barefoot over contaminated soil. In penetrating the skin, the larvae may cause an allergic reaction.

So I call B.S. on that one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancylostomiasis

d) SCHITOSOMA JAPONICUM

Bleeding, anemia and other syndromes. If ova

are settled in the brain or spinal cord, paralysis

and death may occur.

Actually - Schistosoma japonicum is an important parasite and one of the major infectious agents of schistosomiasis. This parasite has a very wide host range, infecting at least 31 species of wild mammals, including 9 carnivores, 16 rodents, one primate (Human), two insectivores and threeartiodactyls and therefore it can be considered a true zoonosis.

Shat’s that got to do with eating pork???

So I call B.S. on that one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schistosoma_japonicum

e) PARAGOMINES WESTERMAINI

Infestation leading to bleeding of the lungs

( endenve haemoptysis)

Actually - Paragonimus westermani is a lung fluke and is most prominent in Asia and South America. It was discovered from two Bengal tigers that died in zoos in Europe in 1878.

So until pigs become tigers, nothing to worry about here.

So I call B.S. on that one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paragonimus_westermani

f) PACIOLEPSIS BUSKI

Digestive disturbances leading to persistent

diarrhea; generalized oedema.

Does live in pigs, so well done on that one. But… A study revealed that F. buski was an endemic in central Thailand, effecting approximately 2,936 people due to infected aquatic plants calledwater caltrops and the snail hosts which were associated with them. The infection, or the eggs which hatch in the aquatic environment were correlated with the water pollution in different districts of Thailand such as Ayuthaya Province. The high incidence of infection was prevalent in females and children ages 10–14 years of age.[11]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasciolopsis

g) CLONORCHIS SINENSIS

chlonorchiasis-obstructive jaundice, liver enlargement.

Wow, this one is totally off target:

It is a hermaphroditic fluke that requires two intermediate hosts. The parasitic worm is as long as 10 to 25mm and lives in the bile ducts of the liver. The eggs of the worms are passed through fecal matter which are then ingested by mollusks. One becomes infected by eating undercooked, smoked, pickled or salted freshwater fish.

NOTHING to do with pigs whatsoever.

So I call B.S. on that one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clonorchiasis

h) METASTRONGYLUS APRI

Causes bronchitis, abscess of the lungs.

occurs in the bronchi and bronchioles of pigs, occasionally in ruminants and very rarely in humans. No significant pathogenic effect.

So close, but not quite.

http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Metastrongylus+elongatus+(syn.+Metastrongylus+apri)

i) GIGANTHORINCHUS GIGAS

Cause anemia and digestive disorders.

Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus is an acanthocephalan parasite which lives in the intestines of pigs and other suids, and very occasionally in humans or dogs.

So another shockingly rare thing for pork eaters not to worry about.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macracanthorhynchus_hirudinaceus

k) BALATITIDIUM COLI

Causes acute dysentery and general weakness.

Balantidiasis in humans is common in the Philippines, but it can be found anywhere in the world, especially among those that are in close contact with swine. The disease is considered to be rare and occurs in less than 1% of the human population.

Terrifying…

Thank you to which ever Sheikh up in the Diwan decided that Qatar is mature enough to handle the sale of some meat.

Only permit holders are allowed to buy from QDC

There I was planning my mega breakfast for Friday. I ticked the sausages, ticked the bacon, ticked the eggs, ticked the baked beans, ticked the tinned tomatoes, ticked the fried bread... was just about to sit back and congratulate my self on perfect planning when I realised I had missed such an important item? And I don't think QDC will have it yet. Who can tell me what I missed out?

Good move! But still hope that Qatar someday will follow the same as in DUBAI & OMAN where there are NON-MUSLIM section in SPINNEYS & AL-FAIR respectively in which pork products are available.

I wonder is all those porky naysayers will queue up at QDC to demonstrate - thought not, they only feel brave on QL where no one knows them and they can get FT's removed with ease.

sorry to harp on about that but there was something not quite right with 3 of my FT's being removed in one hour - think someone did not like me...

This is not a religious debate. There is no need to mention religion in here. It has all been said before. Now if you have no interest in pork go and find a thread that is relevant to you.

but to correct Surinder.Raj. just to reiterate you since your talking about the bible, in new testament version of the bible all meat are blessed by the creator so it will be clean and free to eat by all people.

Hasnadeen, if you are sharing then make sure that they are not eating pork as it will be difficult to use separate fridge and cutleries in a sharing accommodation. You can discuss the issue with your friends and if they still want ot eat the bacon I suggest you to change your accommodation.

In my opinion:

If Qatar is not open for any changes, I believed it will not grow continuously.

Anyways, I just confused about it, is this obviously for those who have liquor license/ID only?

By redtreble• 22 Nov 2011 07:14

Initiator - Noboday is aksing you to eat it so how is it going against the laws and customs of the country? If we buy it, and drive home, put it in our fridges and freezers and then consume it ourselves, how does this impact you in any way?

Nothing to do with the credit limit of the liquor card. You just need the card to get in and show at the tills to show then you are LEGALLY ALLOWED to ve in QDC by LOCAL LAW :)

By Angelo• 22 Nov 2011 05:28

Is it being sold based on the credit limit of the Liquor card or separate?

They should not sell it. It only appeals to some expats in Qatar, albeit a tiny percentage of them, and like any country in the world it is reasonable enough to expect some degree of respect for the local laws and norms. Qatar is a pretty liberal place any ways, and the people who do eat pork, will not be giving up too much in other ways by not eating it.
