Pope Francis has been selected

Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected in a surprise choice to be the new leader of the troubled Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, and said he would take the name Francis I.

Pope Francis, 76, appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica just over an hour after white smoke poured from a chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel to signal he had been chosen to lead the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.

The choice of Bergoglio was announced by French cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran with the Latin words “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum. Habemus Papam” (“I announce to you a great joy. We have a pope”

Francis becomes the 266th pontiff in the Church’s 2,000-year history at a time of great crisis and difficulty. Although a conservative he is seen as a reformer and was not among the small group of frontrunners identified before the election.

He also went against one of the main assumptions before the election, that the new pope would be relatively young.

He is the oldest of most of the possible candidates and was barely mentioned in feverish speculation about the top contenders

I dunno who made this about Islam or Muslims...The Holy Pope is an international and very INFLUENCIAL figure, therefore I don't think this is issue pertains to Catholicism only....If Anything I do have Catholic family members, so it's part of my daily life anyway....STOP BEING SO DEFENSIVE, THIS IS JUST A DISCUSSION, NOT A JUDGEMENT.

Catholics are not that weak to be provoked by a weak community or religion who doesn't have fundamentals. It has a tradition and values ever since it formed. People who are defensive and trying to blame others are weak. Also, they will be barking until they end up without fulfilling their unwanted and meaningless goals. Catholics never harm people mentally or physically like others do by killing innocent people all over the world. I do not understand why a particular community or religion is so defensive and aggressive as they do not have clear fundamentals I guess. Stop peeping into others business and try to admit your hidden plans. This particular community is getting haunted and attacked by others in different part of the world is why they are so aggressive and majority of their people are ignorant, arrogant and illiterate. Be a human being rather than living for religions. Cheers.

Question

If the holy pope's actions are believed to be controlled and/or inspired by God and not his own will wouldn't u think that all popes throughout history should have the same stands on issues?

that answer of that question alone opens up a whole can of worms of u think about it!!!!

I hear your views 100 percent.. I believe the same applies to all religious leaders of the world.

By wirehead• 17 Mar 2013 08:10

nope. there were pretty evil popes in history so believing they are controlled by god is absolute crap. at the end of the day, they are just human beings.

yeah , you simply right...The Catholic Church is the largest non-government provider(company) of education and medical services in the world .

ah...i tell a joke and you take everything seriously. it's definitely not fun to be an atheist. all you do all day is get fixated on assuming that the entire catholic church is made up of pedophiles and think the worst of people. some of them do prefer women you know.

that said, he wasn't even a bishop that time. yes, he had a position within his order, but for the rest of the world, he was just a priest. he couldn't have had that much power back then. thousands of people died, including priests, even bishops. what could he have done o most enlightened one?

i don't have a right to judge him on what he did or did not do during that time because i have no idea on how complicated that time was, but let me try to put it in the perspective of my country's history. like argentina, we were in a military regime in the 70's and have a somewhat parallel history. the repression made many priests embrace liberation theology and some of them eventually turned into communist rebels.

from what i can gather based on the limited information i have, those two priests may already be communists that time and the final straw was the order forbidding them to go to the slum areas (which may have been a communist-controlled area), which they disobeyed so they got into trouble.

if then father bergoglio had been too vocal in saving the two priests, it would have put the jesuit order (and all the priests who belong to it) in danger and the military junta might accuse them of colluding with the communist rebels. they could have been wiped out. there have been times in history when the jesuits have been driven out of a particular country because they ruffled some feathers in the government. i'm pretty sure the catholic hierarchy (i.e. the diocese, etc) in argentina wouldn't have done anything to save them either.

whatever his involvement was back then, he probably had to make very difficult decisions in a very complicated situation. it's not fair to convict him of something if we do not know the whole story. the two priests were found alive eventually, and that would be called lucky. maybe he even helped, but we never know. latin america had a very big desaparecido problem back then and there were many more who were never found. same case with my country.

these are all assumptions but i know one thing for a fact, leftist groups can tell nasty tales whenever it suits them to make themselves look like good martyrs and their causes look righteous when there is simply something or someone they are against. they're some of the worst hypocrites on earth

The Society of Jesus (Latin: Societas Iesu, S.J., SJ or SI) is a Christian male religious order of the Roman Catholic Church. The members are called Jesuits and are also known colloquially as "God's Marines",[2] these being references to founder Ignatius of Loyola's military background and members' (((((willingness to accept orders anywhere in the world and live in extreme conditions.)))) The society is engaged in evangelization and apostolic ministry in 112 nations on six continents. The society's founding principles are contained in the document Formula of the Institute, written by Ignatius of Loyola. Jesuits are known for their work in education (founding schools, colleges, universities and seminaries), intellectual research, and cultural pursuits, and for their missionary efforts. Jesuits also give retreats, minister in hospitals and parishes and promote social justice and ecumenical dialogue.

This should be in Religious Teachings.

Having said that, I waited in anticipation and loved his speech. Especially where he asked the crowd to pray for him first.

Francis the First. First Jesuit Pope. Like him already.

after all that waiting all night, it's pretty nice to be surprised.

chose a unique name, after one of the most popular saints. first one from outside europe. first from the developing world. he's also the first jesuit pope ever. very interesting. this guy is making me keep my hopes up. heard he's not one of the more liberal jesuits though.

he looked a bit scared when he went out to the balcony. i felt sorry for him.
