PIA staff held in Pakistan for hiding drugs in Lahore-Dubai flight’s toilet

Pakistan has arrested at least 12 staff of its national carrier following the discovery of 6 kg (13.23 lb) of heroin in the toilet of an aircraft bound for Dubai, an airline spokesman said on Monday.

The latest instance of misbehaviour by the staff of cash-strapped Pakistan International Airlines was uncovered after the military-run Anti-Narcotics Force raided a flight from Lahore to Dubai flight on Saturday, Danyal Gilani said.

"Around a dozen employees of PIA have been detained and are being interrogated in connection with heroin seizure," he told Reuters. "If proven guilty, they will face action with respect to their jobs, in addition to the legal consequences."

In June last year, the airline sacked five cabin crew who had been detained in Britain on accusations of trying to smuggle mobile phones and foreign currency.

In 2013, a PIA pilot was jailed for nine months in Britain after being found to be over three times Britain's legal alcohol limit for flying, just before he was due to take off with 156 people aboard.

For nearly three years, the government has struggled to find private buyers for the airline. Employees staged a three-day strike in February to oppose privatisation.

Well done to the authorities for catching them before the plane departed..

Sadly PIA is the laughing stock of the airline industry and the butt of many jokes..

It needs to clean up its act and provide better customer service

Writing for the writing makes no sense. PIA has always been "in the red" for several straight years now. And the government keeps pumping in millions to keep it afloat. The strong workers unions and political parties will not allow for the sacking of unwanted workforce. So just for "goodwill" a loss-earning organization should be allowed to continue? Where's the logic?

In a way, PIA is a source to carry on the Pakistan's good will to the other destinations around the globe ......... which is still profitable & beneficial for the country ............ even though they earn NOTHING in the form of cash ..........

P.I.A can never get privatized or even closed down. There are too many losers should this take place. It is just not the employees who will lose but also politicians in power. Whenever, any political party comes to power, it provides jobs to its "loyal" supporters and PIA is one such organization which faces the influx of new faces. Pakistan Steel Mills was another. That has been true with all political parties. As such each government just keeps pumping in cash to keep this white elephant alive during its tenure for the benefit of its supporters.

The situation of P.I.A is such that before you board a P. I. A. flight ...

P...Please

I ...Inform

A...Allah

Perhaps the time is ripe to shut down the airline rather than throw money at it

P.I.A needs a Complete Overhauling Service - from A to Z. Political envolvement has destroyed all the organizations.
