Pet names I love to hate!!!!!

By missmoneypenny

Hi there people.

There is a guy at work who constantly calls me 'kiddo' and 'buddy' and its driving me crazy.

I'll be honest with you - sometimes I want to punch this person. He is trying to be a smartypants, and if it didn't seem so condescending I don't think I'd mind (eg. I have friends who call me other pet names that I don't mind at all)...

Does anyone out there feel my pain?

:) x mp

But I agree its not professional at work.

Also, I agree with others that its a cultural thing. I took a course once in Lebanon taught by my own Aunt, and she insisted that I call her Mrs (insert Last name)! While my own profs at University in Canada (who were all strabgers to me at the beginning of the courses) ALL insist that you only use their first names....go figure.

What drives me insane is the use of titles in the middle east....I can understand PHDs being referred to as Dr....but we have people in the office who get offended if you don't call them Engineer so and so....how retarded is that???? So now I insist being called Accountant so and so =ppp!

Stay safe all.

Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?

mom scarlett, there are times that you would appreciate being called certain pet names, but it all depends on how they used it...sometimes they would put it sarcastically and oh you know what i mean....those person who uses it that way irritates me...but hmmmmm, guess i should also learn use pet names as a defense mode (on onboard comments)...

MIGHt have a different connotation than women calling you that.

... but you're kind of pet names don't bother me at all. :)

Professionally or in normal conversation - doesn't matter which - pet names when used as a tool to condescend are the ones that annoy me! Its usually obvious when this is being done because of the context. Eg. in debates etc....Actually someone on QL is a good example hehe i won't name him or I will get earbashed with long-winded replies, huns, dears and God only knows what else LOL!

and just about anything in between..My favorite tho was insect...pifpaf indeed!!

I don't get offended when people call me things like that..so never really think about it offending others when I do it..but certainly would hate to rub someone the wrong way by doing it in ignorance.

Ok well Corne I might..but she's such a sweetie pie that I can't resist picking on her...right hon????

By Cornellian• 8 Dec 2007 12:17
Cornellian

Yes she should and must apologize! She offended me deeply and scarred me for life when she called me "hon" once! I shall never forget that horrid experience! I still have nightmares about it u know, my therapist said with time my wound will heal. So she better apologize! :P

By Happy Happy• 8 Dec 2007 12:14
Happy Happy

Are you really apologizing? Or is this just a laugh?

I think missmoneypenny's post and subsequent ones, were about formal work environment. So, what we're saying here, that this behavior is not professional.

At friends or informal level, one can always handle the situation easily. Or even might like friends and relatives calling them with sweet intimate names.

As for me, call me whatever you like..:)))

well to those I've called honey, hon, dear, sugar, sweetie, guys, gals, y'all, doll, etc, and I'm sure there are more..I do apologize..but that's the way I speak and I always DO mean it!!! Heck, I'd say it to your face..and probably have if I've met you!!

Corne, Pm and Happy Happy...if a professor wants you to call them something other than prof or Dr...they most likely will tell you. Hubby used to tell students they could use his first name, back when he was lecturing...but now I'm pretty sure most call him Dr...I just call him Hey YOU!!!..lol just kidding...he only makes me call him Dr when he's mad at me...or..Sir...

I think a guy who's been doing research and teaching for over 40 years, not to mention got his PhD and published many papers would rather be called By Dr. or Prof ;) It just a sign of respect and appreciation I guess.

ooo PM, who was the Cornell student ? I bet u I know him! lol, Cornell is just too small!

PM: You see, I'm wide awake..:) although it’s Sunday alright.

Corn: That was a very cute comment about Mike! You call them by their nickname they correct you to show some respect. You call them Sir, they ask you not to be so uptight...:))

A professor, in my culture, is always called Dr. so and so. Not even called Prof. so and so. Certainly it's a taboo to call my professor by their bare name.

For a while I was an instructor, and I begged the students to call me by my first name, they NEVER DID. I was teaching at a continuous learning organization, so my students were, in many cases, much older than myself, but this gesture is considered respect.

Easy Professor Doctor Peaceful Muslima..:))

I'm fine with those names, and I tease my friends with "kiddo", "cupcake", "sugar plum" lol and I don't mind them doing the same. It's just when someone says it and u know they mean to be condescending that annoys me.

Just tell him you don't like to be called "kiddo". If he does not stop, you can tell him that you will have to report his unprofessional behavior.

If you don't wish to escalate the situation, pick a name he does not like, and call him by it!

If he happens to be leadership himself, maybe you need to be firm and say " I do not appreciate you calling me that, you're an example and my co-workers will follow suit. Please stop".

I really think this is an immature person!
