'Kiss protest' held at Turkey subway station
Last updated: 15 hours ago

Some 100 people kissed for several minutes at Ankara station in protest of moral warnings by subway authorities.
Dozens of couples have locked lips at a subway stop in Turkey's capital, Ankara, to protest subway authorities' admonishment of a couple that kissed in public.

Some 100 people in the station kissed for several minutes in protest on Saturday. Demonstrators carried signs reading "Free Kisses'' and chanted slogans.

Turkish media reported that, earlier in the week, Ankara subway officials made an announcement asking passengers "to act in accordance with moral rules" after security cameras spotted the couple kissing.

The issue prompted an opposition lawmaker to question the ruling party, which many secularists fear wants to expand the role of Islam in Turkey, about whether subway officials were authorised to make such demands.

A conservative group of some 20 people staged a counter-protest. Police set up barricades between the groups.

I am not sure why it is peaceful..

Today they peacefully broadcast kisses..may be tomorrow they will all get laid in public for some similar reason..

In my opinion peaceful protest is by writing.. if the authorities receive thousands of letter asking for the reform or wtsoever they would definitely think about it.

I hate to see this in City Center with two people with moustaches kissing.... it would put me right off my falafel.

It seems a number of outlets are reporting violence against the protestors now with one person being stabbed. I find that shocking that kissing upsets some people so much they are prepared to serioulsy injure or kill someone for it. Very sad

OK some mention of the kisses being attacked when they left the metro station

http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/protestors-in-ankara-manage-to-go-through-with-kissing-action-despite-police-mobilization.aspx?pageID=238&nID=47594&NewsCatID=341

It makes me laugh, the police in Turkey have nothing better to do than try and break up people kissing. pathetic.

Strange about the violence thing as no where else was that reported. They report some Islamic protests by a small group but the police kept them apart.

I'm having a little trouble believing there was that much violence, if only because so few of the news reports mention it. Generally the reports don't include any references to people getting stabbed.

Strange, right?

I guess they like violence better than love...:/

Strange - the way it was reported elsewhere it wasn't so peaceful:

"Islamists attacked a group of kissing couples who locked lips in a Turkish metro station to protest a morality campaign by the authorities in Ankara, the local press reported on Sunday.

One person was stabbed when about 20 Islamists chanting "Allah Akhbar" (God is Greatest) and some carrying knives attacked the demonstrators on Saturday, the Milliyet and Hurriyet newspapers reported."
