Hi!

Does anyone know of any Nurseries for Plants in Doha? What kind of Plants do you get there? How feasible is it to have a garden in Doha considering the extreme climate? Any body who has orchids at home? Please lemme know.

Thanks in advance

Where exactly is the nursery on the way to Shahaniya? Can you see it from the main road? I'd MUCH rather drive out that way than to the wholesale markets!

I need to pot several poinsettias and can't find potting soil at Carrefour or Giant.

The plants in the Omani souq tend to be way more expensive than in the garden Centres along the road. I always go to a garden Centre called Madeen or something like it. Orangy sign with Arabic name. One of the first centres coming from Bukhanan furniture. The guy selling pots there is called Shawkat and he will deliver. He will also put tar on the inside of the clay pots so that the water does not get soaked into the clay. Anyway he is very helpfull and does not charge extra to deliver. Also very good english. Maybe Shawkat is away, then talk to the owner, Qatari who is also very nice, helpful & good English. They are usually there in the evening.

I use Family Garden Centre next to Wholesale Market. Like Charan siad there are lots of nurseries there and it right behind Buchannan furniture off Salwa. They have plenty of things already planted and I'm sure if you ask, they will do the whole thing.

Hi,

I am in Doha visiting my daughter. I would like to buy her some large pots and plants to stand out side her villa. If possible I would like them delivered as a surprise, (we are having our christmas whilst we are here). Have no idea what would grow well in a pot, and basically would like something that doesn't require too much tlc! (she would forget)!

I could also visit somewhere if that is the only option, but would like somewhere where they did the whole package, i.e. pot, plant and soil.

Would love any replies within the next couple of days.

Thanks

Linda

I thought indica's were smaller plants compared to sativa i suppose out doors they can get just as big, but either way i love smoking both from my glass pipes.

Sorry i'm a little slow as i don't log on regulary, Neem Tree question seems to have been answered (Azadirachta indica)

Not native but thrives out here. If for garden planting be mindful that it time it can grow pretty big.  So keep away from built structures.

Cheers

We used to put neem leaves in our closet/cupboards to keep cockroaches away. They're used in stead of naphthalene balls.

Neem has other medicinal properties as well. I've heard that people used to use Neem twigs for brushing their teeth. People with chicken pox use it a lot too.

i have used neem for my chicken pox (way back when) take the leaves and then blend it and use it as a paste all over yr body as you would callamine lotion, then when dry wash it off.

also have boiled the neem leaves and used the water to shower (no soap needed)

all this helps to eliminate the itchiness when having chicken pox and it has worked for me (thanks to the advice of my gardener)

also you can find NEEM bar soap in some shops too.....

just thought i'd share this

It is at the VIP roundabout (the big roundabout between Al Mana Signals and Ras Abou Abboud R/A along C-ring road).

Coming from Al Mana signal towards Ras Abou Abboud, you turn right at the VIP roundabout as if you are entering te airport, then turn the first left (some 100 meters from the R/A) and go to the end. You will find the nursery there.

THey open Sunday to Thursday from 6 AM till 11:30.

The tree name is Neem. One of its benefits is repelling insects.

It is sold at the Municipality plant nursery for 5 QRs .

Moonbeam is expert about the plant benefits. You can google about neem and learn more

I have a question for your though. I was discussing this morning about a tree and I believe the name is Naam or something like it. It is supposed to grow very well here. It grows quickly and has been used thruout Africa for soil retention pirpose. The leaves are supposed to medicinal. I know it comes from some Asian country. I do not remember much more. Can you give me more info. Would appreciate that. Thank you

Sorry I couldn't help myself, being a Senior Materplanner & Landscape Architect.  I work with this stuff every day,  not to sure of public nursey stock but his is the native plant stock for Qatar.  All species listed will grow well, with limited irrigation.

Hope it helps:

Some people have posted on here before about a larger/wholesale-retail nursery on the way out of town but I've never been there. You could try doing a search on here.

I go to Family Plant something or other right off Salwa road near the wholesale markets. If you turn off Salwa in between Buchannan furniture there's a whole row of nurseries. "Family" is towards the end.
