In the news this morning

By silverback

The body of a deceased Indian national has been in the Hamad Hospital morgue for the past month. The Qatari government refuses to send the body back to it's home country. Why??
Because the guy had unpaid fines totalling QAR 8,000 and the government are determined to collect this money before releasing the body.

Question: Does the Qatari government really need 8 thousand riyals from an impoverished Indian family, who's father died while making some son of a bitch businessman wealthier ?????

The bodies of 2 indian labourers have been found over the past week down at the industrial area. The 2 labourers committed suicide (by hanging themselves) on 2 different occasions. (If this news brings a smile to u're face then u most probably have deep rooted psychological disturbances and u need help....fast).

Question: Why are the big factories and construction companies being allowed to abuse and exploit these humans and make them work under extremely harsh conditions ?????

Why did i post this thread ???....i have no idea....it's one of those rare occasions when i am actually touched by what i read....but can the loosers who come onto this website do anything about this or are u guys content with sitting around and talking about where to go for the weekend and what are the best places to get "pissed" ???

you are always the voice of reason

pm your posts are so often antagonistic - do you realise?

me thinks you need to chill out with some cute members of the opposite sex.

PM, if you're looking for the reason why some people might have reacted badly to Silverback's thread, you need look no further than Silverback's own first post:

"...but can the loosers who come onto this website do anything about this or are u guys content with sitting around and talking about where to go for the weekend and what are the best places to get "pissed" ???..."

Calling the members of Qatar Living "loosers" [sic] and criticising them for using this as a resource to make friends and socialise and have a life in Qatar, as opposed to spending every waking minute in angst about all the injustices in the world isn't exactly the best way to go about winning friends and influencing people.

I wonder what sorts of fines for 8000 Riyals. His employer should pay, that's the whole point of the sponsor system.

I just dropped few stuffs this morning. The SA embassy located in somewhere in west bay. From rainbow roundabout you go towards the west bay ... pass Intercon and Aladdin Kingdom. Before you go up in the bridge (cross the water) you turn left in the roundabout. Pass another 2 roundabout, you make a 'u' turn on the second roundabout. Then you turn right on the first right ... then right again, right again. You should be able to see the building with South African embassy flag on the top. You can drop anytime in the morning before the 20th of June.

"Send the Body Back" fund raising drive is dead and is against the law so how now?

By jaelee• 17 Jun 2007 12:17
jaelee

Great idea, but I know you have to be careful when fund raising in this country. There are "organised" fund raising groups authorized by the government and it's against the law to set up your own.

How are you doing Novita and how is everything going on with you?

where is the SA embassy or who should I contact to give stuff like that? Do you know someone that I can contact to give those things away?

about this and set up a drop point where people can go to to drop their contribution.

And yes, I agree with Cornellian, to ask someone in hamad how we could do about this and send the bodies back to their families and some extra money as well.

QL has 10,000 plus members, so I think everyone could chip in or something...

be at least some respect for the dead people. They were abused while they were alive and when they are dead, their poor family is getting abused now? :( From where would they pay to get him back? 8000 Q.R is approximately 100,000 Indian Rupees. Do they expect these poor people to pay that much? Only god knows about their situation and how do they live. There is a dignity for the human in his life and after his death. Saving his dignity after his death is in burying him as soon as possible, not to be kept in the hospital fridge for months.

I'm asking you from here to show some mercy and let him go back to his country, it is not enough that his family already were missing him all that time while he is alive. Do they really need also to miss him while he is dead?

I will come to you office this afternoon to give my share QR 20 for "send the body back" fund. I think we need only 400 ppl out of 10000 QL's. I am doing my part and nobody can blame me

Stop crying. Go ask Mommy for some milk and cookies.

Is your story a sad one? Yes of course it is, very sad. You castigate us for not doing anything about it. What are you doing yourself? Have you started a collection to get the QR8,000? Have you written a letter of protest to be published in the newspaper?

There is a lot of misery in this world and many people do their own quiet things to help other people. We don't need you to tell us what we should be doing?

I was thinking something more along the lines of have a post where all the users come up with suggestions about ways to help workers. Small things like giving them bottled drinking water or free lifts in u're car, or bringing them food. We're all anonymous here so no-one needs to know who u r. I think u should u should contribute money directly to workers on the site....go up to them and give them cash....remember these guys get paid very little so any donation will make a difference to them.

And to all the QL users who i did offend, u r exactly the people i wanted to provoke, i'm sorry i wasn't talking about u, u guys obviously do care.

How about contributing a small fixed sum every month for QL charity we can use that money for such cases. We are spending a lot of money for no use...just a suggestion... What do you all think?

such a sad story, but why direct the anger toward QL users, we are not a banch of loosers, and I have met here some of the most motivated and open minded people I ever encountered......

Exactly Mufy, the worst part of it all is that these people get treated as though they aren't even human beings. It's pathetic to say the least, & it's not because they're of a certain colour or come from a specific country, it's because they're poor and people "can" exploit them.

We sympathize with the bereaved family of these unfortunate men but we can only do so much.

We can only give our opinions and comments about it and you may not know it (or give a damn about it) people here in QL do humanitarian causes in our own way.

Yes, in our own private way, we try to help people and we don't need to post it here. QL members meet outside (FYI) not only for fun but for humanitarian causes as well.

You categorically branded QLers as happy go lucky, devil may care bunch of people, rude, heartless and without any compassion to the less fortunate brethren?

If you think so lowly of the posters here in QL, then why are you here? Are you not afraid that you would be branded as well...Or you want to spite us that you are far better and know better?

We are also people with problems of our own. QL is our recluse and where we find fun and little hapiness...thanks a lot!!!

that sucks. even credit cards have pays offs wen the cald holder dies.. and it is government's duty to send the body free of cost to the home country of the dead.. normally some expat associations come to help at this point.. but why a month and nothing happened...?

behaving towards a human depends on our culture.. some arabs behave towards these asian labourers as they are slaves.. they dont' care if the labourers are working in the sun, they don't care if they odn't have acs in their servants room... only the govt can bring a change to this by shaping strict laws...

This is a really sad story. While some people waste money on anything & everything, others don't have enough money to eat. And while some people think their superior, others lost hope in life (as those two indians). The rich seem to get richer, and the poor poorer. And it's all happening in the same country!!

The deceased wanted to stay in Qatar without a RP so now he can stay in Qatar as long as he want without an RP and look at the bright side he doesn;t has to pay for his RP.

The authorities are fulfilling his last wish.

When the society degrades to such a level that it starts extorting money from the dead then you just have to wait for God's Wrath.

So looks like the time has come.......

Maximum company in Doha are money minded.and maximum owner are from different countries. They need their works without salary the workers, who is from poorest country always in depressed condition. They think they want to run their office for a short period and capture all the money and send to his country. Some owner have no mind to run the companies. They don't want to give salaries in time. The person who sponsor for the company he don't have time to check the company.I think they are busy more then Bill Gates.Next part government is the supporter of the company owner not for the worker.Human Rights talked about the cases. But they have fear about just like RED INDIANS in America.SO don't try to do social works ;eave it as it is.

I totally understand your feeling right now Silverback, as I got shocked when I was reading your threat. But it's no need to culpabilize QL members, more generally speaking wealthy expatriates.

I know the chance I have to live in good conditions compared to the asian labourers. Unfortunately, expatriates cannot do anything about their harsh conditions of living. The only thing I can do is being kind with them and not treat them like non human-beings.

It's the government task to change this situation.

What is sure is that this system has to change, but I'm not sure at all it will, as it is the same in other GCC countries.
