National Clubs

Nobster
By Nobster

Hi All,

A few people have advised me that you can join clubs in Qatar - of your nationality - to meet people from home

Does anyone know if there is a British / English club as it would be nice to obviously explore another culture but would also be nice to meet people from home

If anyone knows of things like this I would be much appreciated

Thanks Clare

I am a non-white and have had no difficulties with Garveys. I have also seen various nationalities being served there. Maybe Gypsy and her boyfriend had an attitude and put their backs up.

It's not a right just 'cos you're white!

Have a great time in London Mash'Allah. Wish I was going. At least in London you and your boyfriend can go anywhere you want and no one will hassle you. Great city. Enjoy!

Can't. I'm flying to London this evening. Maybe next week though. :)

I don't want to become a member. Nor do I want to go to a place where I have to scream at the bouncer to let my boyfriend in.

I would rather go to someplace less stressful.

If you're not a member yet, get yourself a membership and you can take your boyfriend there. I've seen enough Arab guys there and they don't seems to have a problem. Some of the Arab looking people are actually grown up in Europe or America and they don't really practice their religions, so they are allowed to get in to a Haram place as they call it. hi! hi! hi!

Cheer up!!!

It's not me they have a problem with, I'm white. It's my boyfriend they never want to let in.

To me all this sounds like is "This is Garvey's excuse to be racist."

By Gypsy• 18 Jan 2007 15:27
Gypsy

So I guess it really sucks to be a non-muslim or non-practicing muslim Arab. :(

Sorry! to hear that Gypsy, but in order to get in to Garveys you have to pay for a yearly membership which gives you benefits to use all their facilities and come by everyday if you want as we do! If you're a member you don't need to pay 20 Qatari Riyals everytime you go there.

I am Asian and I don't seems to notice that they are racist. Maybe you only go there occasionally and the security don't recognized you, that's why they have to check you. But if you come often and they get familiarized with your face maybe you won't have the same problem. I think Garveys family are quite generous people, they made my kids happy last Christmas holiday!!! They provided party for the kids and gave them presents!!!

is not very Arab friendly. I agree with you there but the reason is that alcohol is haram to muslims. This is not Garvey's decision.

Children are welcome at Garveys. This is another reason why I want to join. But as I am not European, they may not let me.

I understand that they don't want to risk their license, but surely their must be a better way to make their position known, besides making yourself look racist. And really whether it is Sheikh Faisal forcing them to do it, or they themselves, the point is that Garvey's in most certainly not Arab friendly.

Wow I really seem to have opened a can of worms here ! Thank you for all your advice - are children welcome in places like this or is it just for adults, as I will be moving to Qatar with my 2 young children so will obviously not have any babysitters to hand?

Of course I believe you. Why would you lie about something like this? I just think you are wrong about the motivation. Garveys do not want to risk their license and the rules are very strict concerning Qataris.

It could be that they think your boyfriend is Qatari until you can prove otherwise. I don't know the reason but I do symphathise. I suggest that you talk to Brian Garvey and get some answers to why your boyfriend gets this treatment.

I'm sorry if none of you believe me, but I think there are real problems with a place that makes me wait for 20 minutes and talk to managers just so I can have a drink with my boyfriend.

I said they are American, European and Canadian. They are of Arab decent so look arab. I don't believe you can tell someones religion by looking at them.

Your friends? Where are they from? If they are being hassled you should make a point of talking to Brian Garvey about it. Personally, I would never join a club that was racist and that's why I went to the lenghts I did to find out. A few months ago this was a forum topic with dozens of opinions. I deceided to find out for myself and actually asked what the policy was. It is down to the owner and Sheik Faisal is strict about not allowing Qataris or other muslims into Garveys. The Sheik also owns Rydges and no Qataris are allowed in (although other Arabs are) on his orders.

SO why do they constantly harrass my friends who aren't white?

By Tigasin321• 18 Jan 2007 14:44
Tigasin321

My African friends are not white and they have no problem at all. Also, I know several black and Asian British people who never have had any problem getting into Garveys. It just isn't true to say they are racist.

Your right richard, it's ok not to be white if you are staff.

By Gypsy• 18 Jan 2007 14:37

SO what's the excuse at 7pm when we go to meet some of our other friends, who are not members, who are white to watch a football game, and they didn't have to pay, but it takes 20 minutes and a trip to the manager plus 20 or sometimes 30QR before he's allowed in?

I spent an hour talking to Brian Garvey about membership requirements as I am thinking of joining. Garvey's is a European club that is their charter. They do allow exceptions (hopefully, me) but the charter is for a European club and this is what their operating license is based on. Therefore, Europeans of any color get priority for membership/

There is no color bar to Garvey's whatsoever and old man Garvey is not racist. His wife is from Goa as is most of his staff. If you have doubts, ask the staff if Garvey's is racist.

There charter does not allow them to accept Muslims (this is not down to Garvey's but to Sheik Faisal who is the sponsor). The application form asks for your religion so that if necesssary they can prove they do not accept muslim members.

Also, I am white and everytime I have been there (usually with Arab friends) I have always had to pay the 20QR.

This is not refusing to see the truth. This is fact. If you don't believe me you are welcome to speak to my Arab friends who go there with me.

Gypsy, so you have seen it with your own eyes every time you go?

You and your friends are welcome to your opinion but I feel may be misguided.

Garveys is a private club and in common with other private clubs I understand that a fee has to be paid to get in.

I believe that there is also a time after which you cannot enter if you are not a member.

By Gypsy• 18 Jan 2007 14:30

Regardless of what has been said before, I see it with my own eyes everytime I go there. I, and my friends, say that place is racist.

I suggest that you search through previous postings and review the comments.

My son-in-law (arab) is a member and has never had a problem.

In the (pre-Garveys) days when it was the ERA Club it could have been called racist.

I have several friends of Arab decent with European, US and Canadian passports, each one is given a ridiculously hard time about getting into Garvey's. Everytime we go we have to go speak to the manager who says something snarky about how "The US isn't part of Europe" Despite the 10 or 12 buzzcutted American white boys already standing at the bar.

The way they always have to pay 20QR as well, even though the white boys don't.

I think people just refuse to see the truth.

What makes you say that?

I thinks it's been disproved in previous posts

However if you aren't white, don't bother joining. They don't like non-white people at Garvey's, especially if you are of Arab decent.

Garvey's is a pub style place. I don't think its particularly British.

I think Garveys is as british as you want
