narrow-minded (-mīn′did)
adjective. limited in outlook or lacking in tolerance; not liberal; bigoted; prejudiced

I was just wondering how many times in our lives we have to encounter people with this character?

How should we deal with them? (properly)

I've got a very little amount of patience most of the time, so i use to stay away from people who are narrow-minded.

it would be good if we can share pointers on how to handle people who are narrow-minded. =)

i agree (narrow mindedness is subjective).

and i dnot think its classified narrow mindedness, its just the difference in the culture or way of thinking (you can call them stubborn).

no one is as open-minded as they think they are ..except if you are a sponge (can absorb everything and anything that comes their way).

Lafanga said Narrow-mindedness is ...Narrow-mindedness is subjective. All of us are narrow-minded for someone or the other.

I think it's more of perception of the other person when that person doesn't agree/conform with what the others' think/believe in.

who is viewing it. There is no monopoly of good judgment, it will always be subjective. Just respect others' point of view even how weird it may look to you! The other person is also looking at you in the same way!

would you be happy for some muslims to come to US and demand that you change your rules to suit them? (i.e. introduce ramadan in the US)

I doubt so... so why you expect them to change their laws to suit OUR western values? what makes you think that our values are the better ones?

I am just trying to help you see the other side of your argument ;o) just think about it

you can't expect to get all the 'good' (the money, the weather etc) without the 'bad'

Gloomy - I know what you mean... it is really hard, but you just have to keep trying to understand the other culture, but also... yourself...

Its not like I am gonna be eating pork BBQ in front of the mosque, with a beer in one hand and a cigar in the other, blasting rock music over the call to prayer...I have been told I could be arrested for smoking in my car while I drive to work...I am not part of this fasting thing

Lafanga> Thanks for pointing that out, please feel free to come to my country were I do not give 2 S*its what you do.

Bink you are narrow-minded because you aren't open enough to embrace their culture.

See how easily it can be turned around?

bea_7, you're right.

for me it's not actually being upset, but trying to understand them makes me loose my patience sometimes and what i do is tell the person that i will just talk to him/her later. (is it the same thing?)

Ok here is how I see it...The government and law here is a religious based system. They are Narrow Minded in a way that all people here will conform to this faiths belife and practices, this will be very apparent next month starting the 11th. I will be braking the law, when I have my lunch, and my smoke breaks... I am not a member of that faith, why should I be forced to perticipate. We have no Christmas tree patrol going around the USA in december making sure you got your tree up.

being upset with another person's narrow-mindedness is in itself an expression of narrow-mindedness ;o)

open your mind and try to where they're coming from

remember that tolerance doesn't only relate to the popular or modern points of view ;o)

t's really great that the Youth Group is doing a thing where we donated something for the homeless, then some of the kids and adults wrapped up the donations, and now the presents are sitting on a table in the foyer and we can grab one and give it to a homeless person on the street. I gave some of my old stuffed animals, and my friend gave some of her gloves that she doesn't use anymore.

This question will enter your mind everyday here, if you are non-muslim. And ignoring them may not be a viaible answer, some of it will be inposed directly on you! Just watch out for your self, and try not to stand out...
