Mystery solved - Karwa bus
While driving down to sealine last weekend we came across an unbelievable scene. A squillion Karwa buses all in a row parked on the hard shoulder.
The mind boggled at a reason behind it. Today I saw an article on The Peninsula's website which explained it all. A Guinness world record no less!
Booking a Karwa cab a day in advance is a small price to pay for the honour of travelling with a record breaking company. ;-)

some1kool, try standing at C-ring road or E-ring road then tell me if you get a taxi after 30 minuits minimum under the heat of the sun.
by reading all of these comments I wonder if all the people residing in Qatar who do not have a car,buy one for them selves, how many more cars would end up on the roads? and then what would happen that day...! I mean on the roads, in the morning every one out going to their offices..!
by the way have you people not seen the private taxis on the roads...they are every where..! all u have to do is stand anywhere besides the road...you don't have to look for them...instead they come looking for you..:D
our company has 400 buses...but we focus on our job,...
Mowasalat, when the old days of orange cabs will come back, when we didn't have to plan days before we go out some where, like putting your car in maintenance,..
ok simpleman, I will give my token of appreciation to karwa
Karwa, I thank you for arriving at the bus stop near my home 30 minuits late instead of the usual 1 facking hour under the heat of the sun ....thank you
thank you also for the pole that you have provided as a bus stop...very comfortable....thank you!!
Having returned the rental car from which the above photos were taken, we are now once again at the mercy of Karwa taxi 'service'.
No spontaneity allowed in our lives, no sireeee.
Typical conversation when booking a cab:
Me: "Can I book a taxi for 2pm tomorrow please?"
Karwa representative: "Sorry, the first one we have available will be 6pm. But we can offer you our limousine service for 2pm."
Now, you all know that here 'limousine' means saloon car with a little more leg room than a regular taxi, but a bigger fare due at you destination.
Karwa know they have us over a barrel, if you really need to be somewhere at a particular time you have no choice but to kowtow to the monopoly and pay up.
C'mon Karwa, get with the programme. Give us a proper taxi service, one that matches the progressive nature of this city we call home. This city we want to explore without the thought of being stranded somewhere with no way of getting home.
Just my two dirhams worth. :)
Karwa- longest waiting hour to book a cab!!!
well being a Land of LandCruisers , going ahead what Mowasalat achieved is possible in manyways.
though much to be done in satisfying public transportation needs in terms of service... we would rather give a token of appreciation for the work done... at least an achievement in this hot weather is commentable...
S.M.I.L.E
Simpleman is loving everyone
:):):)
This record does not impress me, but the one that will, would be the land cruisers envoy from doha to antarctica
I dare you people you can't do that, place your bets!!
At least they managed to make a record by making the public furious :S
"Everything is okay in the end, if it's not ok, then it's not the end."
"When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one that has opened for us."
back to school not yet comming so they make demonstration to make driver busy,i hope next records is to serve customer and make their life easy and not misireable
agree with all of your posts.....I wish someone from mowasalat could read this and see how people thinks of their stupid stunts.....
LOL... just got the world record mobile phone pun... really funny...
Apparently the way the system works, the drivers are better off pocketing the forgotten item rather than returning it... they don't get compensated for the time they take to return the lost item to you... and most people don't tip them for the return of the mobiles anyway... and yet they are running on a short leash... if they lose time returning the mobile to you... they lose out on meter money and end losing money out of their pockets for someone elses mistake... so why should they care?
I think there should be a system wherein Karwa can charge you say 100QAR which goes to the driver in case of you forgetting any item in the car and having it returned... it works better than the honor system... if the driver is indeed honorable, he can refuse to accept the charge from you...
Anyway, the reason I am saying all this is because I forgot my blackberry in a Dubai Taxi in Sharjah... I had the number of the taxi cab and I reported it immediately... but the driver said there was nothing in the car... and the unit was software locked and password locked... our company is paranoid on security... the driver would have got nothing for the piece except maybe selling it for spare parts but he probably kept it to save himself the trouble of driving back from Dubai towards Sharjah in peak traffic...
It seems Karwa will have a world record for lost phones inside the taxis which are usually "stolen" by the taxi drivers. They are smart in denying such facts. Even the guy(s) in charge at call/complain centre is protecting them. Wonder if they are partners

Dubai went through similar birthing pains. They used to redraw the entire layout of major traffic arteries on a yearly basis. One thing I didn't see them do is repeat the same damn mistakes twice (or more) like they do here. Doha follows British standards from the 50's which make absolutely no sense and are both antiquated and utterly disregard the density of traffic. I've heard Bahrain has demolished most of its' roundabouts and replaced them with signal lights. As for flyovers, wholly agreed, however you know this will require major demolishing of existing buildings, widening roads, and that's gonna be a little harder on the C & D rings. Their money, their loss, but a hell we all have to share.
Furthermore AD is a city you can never get lost in, unless you're mentally challenged. All the streets are clearly numbered and follow a logical system, what about here, how would you order a cab to pick you up or a food delivery. Without using nearby landmarks, no way Jose. I remember the ridiculous parking in AD, but they could easily solve all their woes with a few strategically placed multi-story parking garages. Doha has a simple solution, well there's always a sandpit next to a parking lot so go ahead, make yourself at home! Puncture a few tires, scrape your tranny and underbody. No bigie, you should have bought an SUV anyways! When I first got here, all the sidewalls and makeshift barriers made it seem like a bloody warzone.
Abu Dhabi has been this well planned since the 80s and it still is...
The joy of driving through the programmed signal lights in Abu Dhabi is so jarring compared to driving on the C Ring road here in Doha
But there is one thing that I have to complain about in AD... car parking :-(
Its a nightmare... once on a holiday there, I had to spent almost an hour just to find a parking spot!... but I believe Doha is not far behind in that respect though, in parts of New Doha they are trying really hard to make parking as inhumane as possible...
I don't really agree with you on the poor planning in Dubai though... I know traffic is bad there but there is a real conscious and observable effort from the Governments part to keep up...
I don't see that in Doha though... they just shut down a road and it remains closed for half a decade... Rayyan junction for instance...
Or Ramada signal... they closed it for close to a year... and what did they do... they put up signal lights... AGAIN... sigh!!
I've seen roadworks proceed sooner in India... in spite of the indifferent weather (rains), lack of funds, politics and corruption
How hard is it to figure out that all junctions on C and D Ring roads ought to have been made fly overs at least two years back?
Abu Dhabi is what, a 4 hour drive away? I've never seen a city with such RIGOROUS ORGANIZATION in my life. It's worthy of all praise. Way to go AD.
In AD, you could stand anywhere and in 5 minutes you will find a taxi passing by. It takes 5 QR to get from end to end with a cab. Doha, like another bloody Gulf mess when it comes to urban planning (Dubai) has to do these kind of retarded stunts to "add value" to their services. I've been in destitute countries and they didn't have such a shambles of an urban transport system. Fact: expensive buses do not make a transport system, planned, efficient, well thought out network and scheduling do!
LOOOOOL at verisimilitude
has ridiculed the idea...
While I was in Abu Dhabi, I was told that the buses there were carrying passengers for free the second half of 2008 to encourage more people to take the bus...
I am just dying to tell them how in Doha the transport company lined up their buses to create a world record no one cares for...
Odinah, those idiot managers of mowasalat forgot the achievement part
So, whats the achievement by running these buses?
ah, that's why people have been waiting in bus stops for 30 min. to 1 hour and still no bus was coming due to our transport group Karwa is spending there time in this bullshit guiness instead of providing transport for the public
good work mowasalat, what a crap transport company you are
LOL, thanks, it was a rental.
Got fed up of booking Karwa cabs.
Nice Altima!
