Muslim superhero on the way
NEW YORK — Comic book fans will soon be getting their first glimpse at an unlikely new superhero — a Muslim boy in a wheelchair with superpowers.
The new superhero is the brainchild of a group of disabled young Americans and Syrians who were brought together last month in Damascus by the Open Hands Intiative, a non-profit organization founded by U.S. philanthropist and businessman Jay T. Snyder.
The superhero's appearance hasn't been finalized, but an early sketch shows a Muslim boy who lost his legs in a landmine accident and later becomes the Silver Scorpion after discovering he has the power to control metal with his mind.
Sharad Devarajan, co-founder and CEO of Liquid Comics whose company is now turning the young people's ideas into pictures and a story line, said the goal is to release the first comic book — launching the disabled Muslim superhero — in early November in both Arabic and English.
Snyder says he was inspired by President Barack Obama's effort to reach out to the Muslim world in his January 2009 inaugural address. Last month, Snyder flew 12 disabled Americans to Damascus to meet their Syrian peers, and one of their main goals was to come up with ideas and story lines for the new superhero.

Good idea.
I am just making an observation here, I don't necessarily agree with it... I think we all have to see the comic first before we pass our judgements
WK...You can use my reference in case of an attack.
You are past saving :O)
I thought Muslims already had a super hero..........
Will he save us infidels too?
If he is eryptian u will see all the egyptians commenting like egypt is giving charity to all the world
You're right..
However, i think in this case it will be more like Superman. We all know he is from Krypton.
Here the hero will be from Syria .. Hence the link to Islam..
Does anyone know spiderman's religion?
Does anyone care?
Do kids read comics for fun or are they for teaching religious basic..
double post
If you haven't heard of Hindu superheros, then you aren't following the Indian comic/cartoon scene closely enough. Its flush with ''divine' superheros. Every God has a cartoon series in his or her name.
I grew up on comic books. It can be a good medium to promote values to children.
It can help non-muslim kids understand that muslim kids have teh same values, beliefs as them. In addition, it can also help educate muslim kids about teh values of their own religion.
Teshkeel,a Kuwaiti company is already producing comics aimed at the Muslim community.
There already is one in X-men. I believe her name is Dust and she wears a veil.
I guess we can find out the answers to those questions by reading the comic
But i never heard like..."Christian comic hero","Hindu comic hero"...etc.Why it has to be emphasized as Muslim superhero?
Does he take time off from crime fighting for prayers?
Do his powers wane during Ramadhan?
Last night?
Oh did I miss something? :P
Thanks for the warning, I'll go block my PMs
Now quit hijacking
some one was missing you last night badly
he will come up later and send you lovely pms
Perhaps they will touch on his religion/background in setting the scene, but I can't see them using religion in the stories.
I wonder if the Muslim issue will actually be emphasized in the comic itself.
As a big fan of the Silver Surfer, I like the idea, but I wish they would put less emphasis on the "Muslim" issue..
It is clearly important to have dialogue and break down these artificial barriers between the communities. I hope the Open Hands initiative succeeds..
