Murray wins Qatar Open

Andy Murray brushed aside Andy Roddick to successfully defend his Qatar Open title in Doha on Saturday.

Murray continued his brilliant start to the season with a 6-4 6-2 victory in 70 minutes against the former world number one.

The British number one had been a doubtful starter with a back injury aggravated during his semi-final win over Roger Federer, but showed no signs of distress with a confident display.

The 21-year-old Scot came into the match with a 5-2 career record over his American opponent and always looked in command.

A stunning backhand lob helped him hold serve and level at 2-2, and he broke to love in the next game, aided by a wild forehand from Roddick and a fortunate mishit.

The remaining five games of the set went with serve, Murray sealing it in style after 33 minutes with an ace.

Roddick held serve at the start of the second set but Murray broke again in the third and fifth games to put the result comprehensively beyond doubt.

It took until the final game of the match for Roddick to force a break point but Murray saved it with another timely ace and soon sealed a deserved win.

there was couple of nice moments in the game .. one of them when they were both close to the net and played nicely with tennis ball

i was looking forward to nadal-federer finals, so it was disappointing for me. didn't watch anymore soon after nadal lost. but Murray's win was well deserved, i must say.

It would have been nice to watch it on the television but every bloody sports channel had a football match on, why can't the channels coordinate with each other to avoid this?

I agree ONEmakikimoto. I'm looking forward to his first Grand Slam title next week at the Australian Open. Qatar Open is only 250 points so he should really win the Australian Open so he'll get 2000 points! Nice start for Murray! He already got two titles for this year!

cheers,

paul

The match wasnt as exciting the as the match yesterday (Murray vs. Fed), Roddick wasnt at his best definitely. Murray, though injured, still gave an impressive performance. Good year ahead for Murray.
