Moisturizers Might Cause Skin Cancer

Please, everyone flip your moisturizer bottle over and check the label for these ingredients. From my schooling, I have known that Sodium Lauryl Sulphate has been suspect for many years, and that mineral oil and petroleum based ingredients cause problems, but this is the first time I've seen it in research. For anyone's information, SLS is in MANY shampoos as a lathering agent and surfactant. Ohh and check your lip moisturizer also..if it has petroleum or mineral oil, find something else because as when you wear it, you tend to swallow/eat some of the product...guess where it ends up?? In your liver. Use products with natural ingredients such as bee's wax or natural moisturizers..So...check the label...please.

Moisturizers Spur Skin Cancers In Mice
A new study published August 14, 2008 revealed that Mineral Oil and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, found in many common skin moisturizers, caused mice that were exposed to UV radiation to develop more, and larger skin cancer tumors.

This study is the work of Dr Allan Conney and researchers of Rutger University's Susan Lehman Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research. They exposed specially bred albino mice to UV radiation twice a week for 20 weeks to examine the development of Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinomas, or non-melanoma skin cancers. Then a portion of the mice were treated with over-the-counter moisturizers, such as Eucerin, Dermabase, Dermovan and Vanicream.

What they found was that mice treated with the moisturizers had increased tumors, and larger tumors, which developed at a faster rate than mice that were not treated with moisturizers. After further research, they concluded that Mineral Oil and Sodium Lauryl Suphate may have caused the increase in skin cancer tumors.

However, these studies were performed on mice only. Drugs that have caused a certain reaction in animals do not always have similar effects in humans. Further, more research must be done to verify these results and its effect on human skin.

To help prevent skin cancer in the first place, always remember to practice good sun protection, like wearing a wide-brim hat and long sleeves, and using sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors, and look for products containing physical sunscreens, such as Titanium Dioxide.

There are many ingredients that moisturize without oil...many of them are alcohols but not the kinds as most people think. Are you allergic to ALL oils? Reason I am asking is macadamia nut oil is a nice light oil for the face, but use it sparingly as with any oil.

Amoud...from what I have heard the crystal should be safe since its basically just a mineral from the earth. I'd use it if that's what you want to do for a deodorant. Ohh and there are many natural cleansers to useif you really want to use them instead of the man made kind.

I am a moisturizer addict!!! Oh my, more carcigenics.

I know about the SLS in shampoos and as I have a curly mop of hair no longer use shampoo (I know it sounds gross but gals with curls dont need shampoo, cleansing with conditioner and using a scalp scrub of brown sugar, lemon and conditioner works wonders). I am also trying to get off deodorant and have been advised crystal deo is a great alternative. Any truth to this or is this also going to give me massive arm pit tumors?

because I'd have folks scared to death or not reading it at all!

Hey, have you tried Macadamia nut oil for facial moisture? its very light and great for the skin

Also try avocado, vitamin E and grapeseed oil, mixed together as a body moisturizer...the avocado moisturizes, Vitamin E repairs damage and Grapeseed is an antioxidant.

Cornstarch also is great substitute for body powder and won't clog your pores.

Sprinkle baking soda in your shoes at night to deodorize them...but be sure and switch shoes every other day to allow them to fully dry out, thus preventing athlete's foot.
