Legalising cannabis: £1.25bn tax benefit - without necessarily damaging public health

Research says decriminalizing cannabis could cut the cost of policing, prosecuting and treating drug users, while regulation could help control potency and chemical composition
OLIVER WRIGHT Author Biography MONDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2013

Legalising and taxing cannabis could help the Government reduce the deficit by as much as £1.25bn – without necessarily causing significant damage to public health, a study has claimed.

Research by the Institute for Social and Economic Research said decriminalising cannabis could cut the cost of policing, prosecuting and treating drug users by up to £300m a year.

Meanwhile, tax revenue from licensing the drug could raise between £400m and £900m for the exchequer.

Greenie FTW!! Vacationing in Qatar (1st time) from California & not being able to bring organic anxiety medication posed a huge problem on day one for a particular person in our group – and still a smaller problem for the rest of us. I’ve never gotten weed from an online forum… seems super sketchy – but I thought I’d try anyways. I e-mailed Greenie ( haha420kush@gmail com ) and within less than ONE HOUR all of our problems were solved. Of course prices were affordable – BUT THE BUD WAS JUST AS GOOD!!! I’m telling you —- strait chronic. IN Qatar! Greenie e-mailed me back ASAP, had a great way of getting me what I needed and even threw in some roll papers and a blunt for good business! So what did I do?? – called him again. Went through the sack another 1 oz time (haha typical) and needed more, so Greenie pulled through yet again. AND WITH MORE ROLL PAPERS!!! Greenie feels like my neighborhood “guy” – trustworthy and professional. I think some posts here are from unreliable vendors trying to rip off people, cuz you can tell this guy isn’t trying to rip anyone off – he’s actually running a legit business. E-MAIL GREENIE ( haha420kush@gmail com ) IF YOU’RE DEBATING IT, cuz I DID & I WAS IRIE IN ONE HOUR!! XD

The war on drugs was lost many years ago and supply has increased, while price has decreased. The criminal gangs are making a fortune and do not want the situation to change.

Many people are hysterical when drugs are mentioned but have no experience or any idea of what they are like.

Addiction to anything is bad but believe the hype not the reality.

Less harmful and much less addictive than alcohol and cigarettes. But let's not let the facts get in the way of a good story.

mussafir they are kinda the same but in fact cannabis has been proved to be less harmful than smoking cigarettes. It just has the side affect of getting you high and eating a lot of KFC.

How should we rate drugs? Their addictive qualities? Their likelihood to cause damage to your health?

Dear Thelo, how the hell can you say cigarettes and cannabis habits or addictions are the same? Then, tea, coffee and even alcohol can be in this class 'cause all are plant products. The neuro-psychiatric and social issues differ entirely.

Alcohol is actually a much worse drug than many of the illegal substances but can be legally bought and consumed, same with cigarettes.

If cigarettes and alcohol were developed now they would be immediately banned. Remember also coffee was once banned in Mecca under Islam because it was a stimulate but that was quickly overturned.

thelo ,,"the freedom of choice makes no sense if the people are stupid."

Yes, I agree, If you don't know what is right for you, No one can help.

fubar,, Maybe the cigarettes issue will make a big Chaos

But I believe yes, they can do it step by step

Increasing the price, age limit and then banning it completely

But If we are talking about cancer, there are million of products also should be banned !

By fubar• 16 Sep 2013 10:55

And if it is taxed the same way as cigarettes Sulieman then the cost of treating all the new cancer sufferers will be met by the increased revenue.

Ban them both, or legalise them both. But not one and not the other.

Thelonius ,, You are partially right

when you analyse is this way it doesn't look that bad, But I think the number of the cannabis-buyers will increase and that's really bad as a result, because you know, the people who were afraid to buy it because it illegal will not be afraid anymore!

What I mean exactly, there must be other ways

I would find it hard to believe that cannabis has worse public health outcomes than the consumption of cigarettes.

If Philip Morris got into the hash business, they would successfully lobby for the decriminalization of marijuana in a heart beat.

I wonder why we always choose the worst solution to solve a problem, while we have many others!

I think that there is an MP drug dealer !!
