Lack of social discipline in Qatar

If you disagree with what im about to write or have anything to ad to it be my guests but i elieve what i will say will be on behalf of everyone reading this,
First of all I would like to start off by saying that in Qatar there is a lack of people socialising,, what i mean by that is the way people look at each other here in Qatar is very racist and sexist. In Qatar as well as in some other countries in the Middle East people, especially nationals do not appreciate or respect the other individual in front of them.
People can be racist in this part of the world because the money and connections they have make them believe that they are superior and above another individual, for example if a natoinal or anyone with a domestic worker(maid or driver) will not be respected and treated in the same manner as some one of their own race, they treat them like rubbish, shouting at them, throwing things at them and insulting them, but the real problem is when the domestic worker wants to reply to show self pride, automatically its like he/she murdered someone!
The sexist issue im talking about is the fact that barely anyone can look at each in a way other then a sex model or figure. Honestly I cant blame them for that, but i can blame committees and organisations for not trying to combat a major issue that is damging the reputation of the Gulf countries.
I propose we battle this issue and this long-lasting problem by holding frequent social events monthly with na open invitation to anyone of any race that can combat the issue of racsm and sexism beause people will learn to interact with one another and think and feel using mentality and not trying to act physically towards someone.
This class system is prevalent everywhere .. Its prevalent in societies in India, in the US and every other place including South Africa...
The brits here particularly are really snobbish characters and absolutely incompatible....
Maybe some of them feel insulted by some of the behavior of some of the expatriates. Hence, they treat them in a bad way.
GIVE YOUR THUOGHTS ON SOCIAL DISCIPLINE IN QATAR!!
Unfortunately racism is everywhere, not just here. Its just that in some countries, there are rules/laws that makes people stop their racist behaviour in public but it doesnt mean they stopped being a racist.
Thanks! Will do. It just seemed high to me.
For the stats, see gulftalent.com a report entitled: "Pay inflation and Mobility in the Gulf"
Wow, nice research really impressive!!
Interesting statistics abitoshiba. I would like to know about the 83% of the total population being expats. Where did you get these figures, it seems abit high. FWIW the CIA website states 40% Arab 60 % others. Thanks!
In Qatar:
- Expat population represents 83% of total population
- Expat workforce represents 89% of total workforce
If there is another country that presents the same ratio of Expat to Nationals and if in that same country the problems YOU are arguing about are inexistent then the "Lack of social discipline" is a cultural issue. If such social mixture is no where else to be found then the battle is definitely inadequate.
- People are talking about two social groups: Expats and Nationals.
- People are saying that believes and ways of interaction and behavior of Nationals towards Expats is wrong and disrespectful.
I say that we cannot argue about this because:
The social Group Expat is a multicultural group, diverse and complex.
The social Group Nationals emerges from a unique cultural background.
- The Superiority/VIP issue
Nationals are protected by State rules and regulations.
Nationals have the land and share resources of the land.
Expats work in National owned/controlled companies.
Expats are expats, different, foreigners, strangers, GUESTS.
The real issue is:
If we play cards together, and you have a Joker that you can use as a SUPERIOR card at any time Will you use it or no?
If I give you superiority what will you do with it?
In some States of the "Free World USA" owners have the right to shoot you if you enter their property.
What would you say about that?
I can see where Robo Is coming from.
It is unfair that racist attitudes go unchecked here in the Middle East. Arabs are technically mutts, harboring multiple ethnicities and blood lines within our genetic framework. I for one can attest to having Turkish, Slavic and Jewish lines in my family tree (tracing both the lineages of my parents- who happen to be Palestinian (dad) and Lebanese (mom)).
It isnt the locals alone who practice Racism, but those that come from Western Societies, who see Arabs as under par to their mental capabilities. I have witnessed some of the ugliest racist comments coming from British expats.
I find it inexcusable that intolerance exists in Qatar. For such a Salad bowl of ethnicities, I find it shocking that so many expats have not learnt the local language or adapted to any of the customs (whereas expats in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon etc tend to be far more sensitive to Eastern cultures.
Locals here have no interest in promoting their culture. Partly because I beleive that Gulf racism is internal and is based on fraternalism ( my kind vs your kind) whereas Western Racism is in external, assigning human value and worth to their ethnicity.
Ofcourse, towards migrant workers, some locals develop the latter notion. But this is because of the HUGE stratification between the two populations. Add to that the cultural differences and External Racism is unavoidable. In countries such as Bahrain/Oman, you will find locals within all class tiers.. and as such, racism isnt as common.
Until then,us, as Arabs have to learn to become self sufficient and less reliant on expatriot intervention, we need to get the dirty work done ourselves, clean our own homes, do our own laundry and spend less on the exorbitant things that even those in the West only dream of.
Coming back from the States was a shock. LOL. I learned how to plumb, to paint, to garden, to wire, to upholster, to do my own washing! You begin to lose these skills here (or dont need them at all), because everything is done for you at a fraction of the price... shame.
Don't let one man's dream become another's nightmare
I think that there are (insecure) personality traits, in all societies, that fear lossing power. There are Qataris, and other people, who are oppressive individuals because they fear lossing power.
Actually, not all Qataris behave according to the Islamic laws. Islam teaches them to treat the worker nicely (i.e. giving them their salary immediately, avoid giving them tasks beyond their abilities, giving them the same kind of food & the same kind of clothes that they have,...)
in the east & "developeing" countries you respect your boss. you have too. when there is no gap between the boss & the worker there wud be a conflict. the worker must fear the boss. otherwise the worker wud be the boss.
some qataris want to avoid the conflict between boss & worker by controlling the worker at the beginning so that the worker wud not resist nor disobey them.
Hash, my intention was not to insult you in anyway, I read your post and noticed you posted early in the morning. I had a difficult time following it, that is all. As for insulting..read what you wrote to me about not being welcome on this forum if I asked for clarification. You asked for opinions, I asked for clarification. If English is your second language, that is not an insult it would explain why I had difficulty. PAX.

I have lived a Middle East country that is much worst than this!
These are some generalities, not every "local" is like the folowing:
Where the local population treat every foreigner(Eastern, Western et al) as less than them. They even treat their fellow Muslims from different countries less than them.
Women are asked to leave professional venues if a man is talking. There is Domestic Violence and child abuse.
Women are segregated in restaurants, public transport, banks and any public place.
Visitors are treated with contempt at the airports while locals are all treated like VIP's.
When visiting other countries they are the first to complain and wonder why they have to obey the laws of the host country.
I try to treat everyone as I would like to be treated, with respect and kindness, but the world is made up of imperfect human beings and I am one of them.
PAX
I am sorry I really don't understand what you are getting at. The social life here is as good as you make it. There are plenty of things to do and its pretty easy to meet people. How people treat other people is largely down to the individual. I know some very decent Qataris who treat people with courtesy and respect. I also know some expats who don't. What is your point excatly?
we all love to see things our ways.....
we also like to see have thing behaves our style....
we also like thing going our ways....
we also sub consciously, impose our ways to others....
from the very small, between friends to the very big, a country.....
if everything is equal??? and fair,,, then the world is NOT fair...........and is boring, isn't it ??
Hash,
Completely agree, there is no social life for people who actually know what a life is out side of Qatar.
The way locals and non locals treat lower paid personnel in country is diabolical (worst one I have seen is a Qatari (yes he was before anyone starts) knock a philipino off his bike, then had the gaul to get out of his car and physically assault the biker).
Attitudes to women here are worse than disgusting (as per my previous comments), there is no voice in this country that would make a difference however.
Having travelled extensively over my life time (spent more time out of the UK than in it so far) I know there is nothing that the government can or will do to combat this, however if they are trying to move in the same circles as Dubai etc with tourism then they are going to be forced to do so.
What I am trying to allow people to do in this forum is to discuss a fairly important issue. So please if you want to come in here not finish reading the first two sentences beforestarting to insult me your not welcome here. In this forum i am discussing people like you, you have no social life so your resorting in to going in to an forum you find and being negative acting like it a personal vendeta against you!
Have you been sleep deprived or is English your second language? I have a difficult time reading your post because of all the typos and rambling. I'm not sure what you are saying.
I hope I haven't insulted anyone in the post, and id appreciate reading other peoples opinions or people that agree wit me...
