Two pilots of British airliner fall asleep on long-haul flight: Report

Two pilots on a British airliner on a long-haul flight fell asleep in the cockpit, leaving the packed jet travelling unsupervised on autopilot, Britain's Sun newspaper reported on Thursday.

One of the pilots on board the Airbus 330 flight to Britain — the name of the airline was not disclosed — eventually woke up and roused his colleague, but neither knew how long they had been asleep, the paper said.

The flight took off on August 13 and the pilot and co-pilot took turns to have 20-minute rests but, after flying for more than an hour, they both dropped off.

"The UK has an excellent safety record, and so does airports in India and Pakistan but we are constantly striving to improve air safety."

That is just nightmarish to say the least. Enough to render anyone aerophobic!

More than half of Britain's airline pilots have fallen asleep in the cockpit and a third have woken up to find their co-pilot asleep, according to a new survey.

Some 56 percent admitted they had fallen asleep during a flight and 29 percent said they had woken up to find the other pilot had also dozed off,

The survey comes after it emerged that both the captain and co-pilot of an Airbus A330 plane fell asleep at the same time while it was on autopilot during a flight by an unnamed British operator on August 13.

it happens in London too so it is Ok that it happens elsewhere. Great logic. No, I am not a UK passport holder.

It is really boring sitting there without doing anything, just watching the Auto-pilot.

Happens in all airlines. Just saw a report on tv the other day. It is also well known to all airlines that their pilots are overworked. It is not about an 8 hour shift, it is about having to do one flight after another with not enough time to rest in between.

Finally this is going public, it has been insider knowledge for years though.

Hopefully the airlines will get a grip now...most likely the result will be higher airfares.

There you go again! It is Pakistan (read Muslims) that you hate. And you are open about it.

The person who went about shooting and killing people in the US Navy yard recently, was he a Pakistani terrorist? An Islamic terrorist? What name have you thought for such persons?

If you hate Islam. Muslims, and Pakistanis in particular, just keep it to yourself. Such postings from you do not help in anyway in maintaining a good, friendly, sharing atmosphere at QL.

Rip, has someone from Pakistan screwed you? From your postings that have appeared in QL it appears that way. You are openly after either Islam or Pakistan in your postings.

The posting by Good old joe carried the name of India also but you had nothing to say about Air India!

If you call The Sun a newspaper then you are sadly mistaken.

It isn't even of a quality for using as toilet paper.

A PACKED British jet was left flying on autopilot with BOTH pilots asleep in the cockpit, The Sun can reveal.

brit, same thought here. How did they know?

But in general, yes, such problem does exist. And this kind of scary.

I don't understand why pilots keep falling asleep? If it's a flight within 8 hours, it is a normal working day, and no one has rights to sleep at work. If it is a lengthy flight, I am sure they have shifts, so that they could take turns.

Source ?

Read this in a couple of papers today. The pilots themselves informed the Civil Aviation Authority after landing. this is why their names are not being disclosed.

Also, your final quote is from yourself and not a paper I assume..
