India's hockey players fume as cricketers score all the glory and the riches

Shame on you! Isn't Hockey your National Sport??

From The Times - September 27, 2007

"...Free houses, flights, sports cars and cash bonuses rained down on the Indian cricketers yesterday when the first Twenty20 world champions returned home.

...Last night a coach and four players said that they planned to go on hunger strike in protest at the scale of the rewards....

... Earlier this month the hockey team had held aloft the Asian Cup after beating South Korea 7-2 in the final. ... the players received nothing more than a letter of congratulations from Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister. ..."

Cricketers are being paid by their Cricketing board....which is controlled by ICC.

Since the media is promoting stars and doing write ups people are focusing more on Cricket... thus generating Advertisers willing to pay ads on TV coverage for Cricket.

If such a boring (5day Test) game can generate interest any other game can generate much better interest. So it all depends on how to rope in the Media.

Another thing to blame is India does not have its own Sports channel other than DD (govt channel). When the ZeeTV comes up with their own sports channel then things will improve, definately.

You keep good track of Indian news.. dont you? Hockey is the National game, but Cricket is more popoular. Indian Cricket board is the richest Cricket board in the world... obviously Crickets get more money. World medias give more importance to Cricket.

Cricket is the most preferred game between the south Asian Countries. Despite many other sports are named as national game.

I am From Sri Lanka, In SL Volleyball is the national game, yet we hardly see volleyball matches on TV or Youths playing volleyball. Rich or poor, cricket is preferred since it was cricket that bought fame to the country.

But In India we notice that when cricketers perform well, winning matches with great milestones, they are praised gifted and supposed to be the most richest immediately after the match, where as once they are defeated, they are humiliated, disgraced and their houses are demolished by protesters ..!! This is not nice, after all its still a game.

Anyway Good luck India, and well played...!!
