Indian Construction...a joke

>>>NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Workers removed rain water, scraped dirt & feces, and painted walls at the Commonwealth Games Village on Sunday as India raced to address complaints of filth and hygiene a week before the start of the showpiece event.

The Games were supposed to enhance India's image of a rising power, but shoddy construction, filthy accommodation and security fears have underlined governance and accountability issues, hurting the runaway pride of Asia's third largest economy.

Several top athletes, including world champion sprinter Usain Bolt, have pulled out.

On Sunday, Indian organizing committee officials met to review the work at the Games Village where masons plastered walls while workers struggled to dry out the basement of the Village which sits on the flooded plains of the Yamuna river.

By now everyone’s read the reports of stray dogs (and workers) sleeping in beds meant for athletes and feces found in the accommodations, as well as an Indian Games organizer’s suggestion that India has different hygiene standards from the rest of the world.
---------------------------

After Living on Doha for three years, I'm not at all surprised by this news. The mistake India made when building the complex was having Indians do the work! They should have imported competent workers from another country. I guess the first thing to do when hiring a worker to install a toilet, is find on who knows what a toilet is and how to use it!

I wonder if these are the same workers who built the buildings in Doha, especially the imfamous Ezdan Suites?

Sure, send all the hate mail, calling me a racist, whatever, but facts are facts. You don't see this kind of story from most other countries.

ex.ex.expat, thanks..I don't see any reason to hide the facts. Better live in the present rather than to howl for the credits that has nothing to do today...

Let the teams come and bad mouth, that may be the only way leeches like kalmadi will get cleaned out.

Any of us who try to live on the glories of our past will get left behind today. Look at the UK! We are in a mess and dredging up memories of a "glorious Empire" do nothing for the problems of underage mothers, a knife culture and economic problems.

Better talk about the present scenario...

What worries me is that by allowing the games to continue, the fallout after the games may be more...

Athletes will find any reason to whine about their performance..

Anyway... Good luck to everyone..

By soniya• 26 Sep 2010 14:13

But if INDIAN media wouldn't have highlighted the loopholes in the GAME VILLAGE, the athletes who would have come here for participation, would have badmouthed about the arrangements after the completion of CWG...So, sooner the better....

These are the bitter facts which we have TO ACCEPT...

By kadavsk• 26 Sep 2010 14:11
kadavsk

Stop criticizing CWG now at this stage and let the show begin.

Lot of negative publicity by media to spoil the game. Media always glorify negative aspect

Don’t criticizing Indian workers.

Do you have any thing like Taj-Mahal in Canada?

By Ice Maiden• 26 Sep 2010 14:04

The fact that these issues get highlighted is because in India the press has the freedom to report whatever and whenever they deem "newsworthy". Unlike some other countries where everything gets brushed under the carpet.

Granted the Indian media does go a bit overboard at time, but that's because Indians generally wear their emotions on their sleeve. Unfortunately they haven't learnt the art of "diplomatic spin",smiling and saying Trust us, everything gonna be OK. Should get Tony blair to conduct some training courses in India :)

Indian Govt wasted too much money for this event and spoiled their name. I recomend other countries don't support India to host any big events like this.

every organising country has had its fair share of problems.

Even there was a worry as to whether the world Cup could be organised successfully in South Africa.

If it is happend in any other country, the news of these kind will not come out. Yes, India has its enemies on board. You may call it press, FBI, ISI or its own politicians who would like to tarnish its image in the world.

To those who criticize our great nation, Just think that it is this india who has successfully did the ASIAD in 1982 without any compliant.

friends, We have seen many countries in the past who could not do the facility management for such an event on time, but they never allow the press to demoralize/dismantle the nation.

In every corner of gulf you can find indian working, yes we are really proud of it, it is common that those who are highly qualified will not be available internally.

India is great nation and no other nation can be compared with it. Please study abt india before coming into any conclusion.

The intention behind publicity is that they want to prevent india's effort for a permanent member in UN. Western medias never report the civilized part of india, but always report the uncivilized parts which every country has to an extent.

We understand u guys intentions and will prove that we are able to do this event as well.

JAGO INDIA

ex.ex.expat...I absolutely have no problem in taking a dig at my country or whatever if it fcuks up ... in fact I was one of the first ones to express my feelings how ashamed I feel, of what has happened, when someone brought it first time on QL. But then turning QL into a live reporting page is just getting too far.

"one thing I can say that without India..

no food supplier into the middle east."

What utter bull!

BTW, an Indian labourer took a dump on my job site, unfortunately it was against a hoist motor that some other guys were trying to commission. Even more unfortunate was that it was on an open grating floor and it dripped down 4 levels :o(

Bal samo.. on this thread we are not talking about exportation of food nor the body smell.. but the construction of the facility at commonwealth games.

Maybe in the long run this will be good for India. They may rid themselves of excessive pride and start demanding more of themselves and their government. Then they can build a nation to be truly and fittingly proud of.

did we miss something here dylan??

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2011100031_olywoes17.html

did you forget this happened a few months back...

This is just a sample of what happened there...

Friday evening, as the world watched on television, one of four huge pillars intended to light the caldron at the Opening Ceremony failed to rise.

At the beginning of this week, the ice-resurfacing equipment broke down two days in a row at the Richmond Olympic Oval, delaying speedskating events by up to an hour. VANOC is bringing in a replacement from Calgary, but reporters asked why a backup wasn't closer at hand.

as it is the people at higher levels who submitted bids and those who accepted them, without properly considering their ability to finish the projects successfully. There is obviously corruption involved and that has nothing to do with the labourers.

Another issue is that in the developing world construction is seen completely as an unskilled labour and paid on a scale that doesn't even provide a living wage. In most places in the developed world that is not the case. People are trained in the necessary skills to do the job and wages are paid according to the skill of the labourers. They still may not be the highest paid employees in society but they can make a living wage.

hmmmm.... tell me something new...my head is clogged with India and CWG for last many days.

How about floods and mismanagement of same by India.... thats also an ongoing issue now. Would someone like to take lead into digging on that...I would be interested to give an insiders perspective for all to laugh, make mockery of and look down upon us Indians. Thanks in advance for your efforts, if you are the one taking a dig on this one...appreciate your effort.

I really feel sad and betrayed by politician who are more keen on filling their pockets and put India's image on stake. Cannot complain further, India is still my country and we elected these xxxholes to parliament.
