Lilymum,i would only suggest you to read a lot of books, magazines and newspapers.

British council also provides some test material for the exam preparation which includes a CD which gives u an idea on the Listening part of the test.

If you feel that willl not be sufficient then they have courses for IELTS preparation. Enrol for those courses before u take the exam.

At the outset, good luck for your IELTS.

Unlike what many people think this is not a draconian or difficult exam, they just check for your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. We are not native English speakers either, my husband took IELTS 3 weeks ago, he intends to study further in Australia and this course is mandatory for admissions to Australian Universities.

He did absolutely no prior preparation, he just woke up on the exam day and walked into the exam hall, Im not exaggerating. He got 9 in one part and 8.5 in the other three parts, his overall band score was 8.5. He collected his markscard, a few days ago.

The point Im trying to make is his English is normal English like yours or mine, he wasnt educated at Eton or Harvard, he says you need to have a cool head and clear and quick thinking. Sometimes, in the listening part they give you unwanted and confusing data to deliberately lead you offcourse.

They dont follow any partifular book. The passages, he says, were purely general in nature, some about houses in Amsterdam, an article about education and unemployment in Europe, an article on Ethics in Medical Research and so on.

The speaking session was about his dream house. He says the test was a walk in the park ( for him).

As in any test or exam, a cool head and logical thinking will get you rich results.

Stay calm, read a variety of magazines, books, novels and watch TV and just go ahead and crack the exam. Best wishes.

And let me tell you, some of the best performers in these exams are not necessarily native English speakers. So its actually a level playing field.

I would suggest that you do not even consider this exam at all until you improve your written English.

English is hard even for native English speakers.

If you do want to do well at this - honestly hand on heart - if the way you type is the way you speak - you are close but not close enough.

I would suggest you read more ‘English’ novels, H.E. Bates, Oscar Wilde (Irish) but he wrote good books/plays with a good command of the English Language. Shakespeare (leave that alone) – Iris Murdoch, she was good for her time, W. Somerset Maugham. Daphne du Maurier, even Catherine Cookson had her merits - she was descriptive and she told her tale well.

Look at how the English language is used - look at the semantic, pragmatic use of English and study the vernacular.

I would also look at writing some sort of text or dialogue – copying and pasting that into a Word Document (English version – not American) and look at the spelling and grammar.

ILETS are hard exams to pass (or should be). If you are going to teach English as a second language – learn to teach it as it is spoken not how it is taught by some.
