Rohtak (Haryana), Jan.31 (ANI): In a bizzare incident, a village council in Rohtak city of Haryana has nullified the marriage of a couple, who belonged to the same clan and declared the husband and wife to be brother and sister.

The incident occurred in Rohtak's Kheri village where Satish Berwal and Kavita Bainival, married each other three years ago. Today, they have a 10-month-old boy from this marriage.

The controversy picked up momentum a few days ago, when a group of villagers learnt that both belonged to the same clan. The matter was raised in the village council of Kheri village.

On Saturday (Jan.30), the village council in a special meeting declared the couple's marriage as null and void and declared that the couple would now have live as brother and sister in the village. However, the little boy would be able to avail the right of inheritance from Satish's property.

"We have nullified the relationship of the boy and the girl and declared them as brother and sister. Their son will be heir to the property of Satish Berwal," said Hawa Singh, president of the village council, Kheri village.

As per Hindu religion, marriage in the same clan is forbidden.

In general practice, the age-old custom is adhered to and any possibility of marrying in same clan is prevented during matrimonial alliance. However, in modern times, some of the youngsters find this old custom a matter of argument and wish it should have room for consideration and exception on the basis of individual case and circumstances. as far as i know, and this is not quoting from any web definition,a member had referred to them as tribals.in india, tribals refer to the people who live in the forests...the aborginals, you could say.whereas a clan referd to a set of people who have the same lineage.a group of tribals may belong to the same clan.that does not mean that every clan is a tribal.makes sense?

why do we have to bring Scotland into this?what does Scotland have to do with Rohtak? :-/

clan and tribe almost relates to the same meaning.

Jack you can trace the lineage of Arabs to a thousand yrs at least. Check out those with the prominent families. Most of the Arab tribes have their origins in Yemen.

Svelte you never hear about scottish tribes but clans and here you here about tribes not clans. Can you explain it

I ask you this question because of the growing controversy that such marriages are not healthy and are very likely to cause serious birth defects in the offspring. Please answer this question in the light of the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah. Definitions of clan on the Web:

kin: group of people related by blood or marriage

A clan is a group of people united by kinship and descent, which is defined by actual or perceived descent from a common ancestor.

Definitions of tribe on the Web:

a social division of (usually preliterate) people

Actually Jack, where I come from in Canada there's a HUGE Scottish population that also traces their lineage through clans and can trace theirs back 300 and 400 years (through verbal recollection, if we're talking about where they actually came from and ancestors and such it can be traced back to well before the Romans came). While it was generally considered ok to marry within the Clan (as in another person with the same last name as their could be thousands of members of a clan) it was, until the last one or two generations, not considered ok to marry rival clans. I.e. You'd never catch a MacDonald marrying a Campbell.

They were declared as brother and sister... this does not imply that they are siblings... i.e. borne of the same parent or parents...

so people need to get a grip on reality and be more practical

By anonymous• 1 Feb 2010 11:14

They were not siblings...not even cousins...they were descendants of the same clan....

Only in India do they keep track of these things through the Surnames....In most other places you will not be able to trace your 4th generation relatives....

They aren't actually brother and sister by blood Khalid. From the sounds of it, they might possibly be second or third cousins, but not actually brother & sister. It's a Hindu custom.

Ok let us not twist the news, but see the original story of this thread shows that there are wrong things in this Indian village.

There might be no documentation and these things can happen in poor villages and I think the root cause was that there was one family which did not have kids and were given a baby by another family and this happened.

For every thing there is a cause.

Svelte everyone there knows that you can't marry anyone with the same last name as yours, your mother's maiden last name and your paternal grandmother's maiden last name. They can claim ignorance but nobody is ignorant about this practice there.

Anyway these matters become a matter of our family honour and once honour is involved then human life becomes insignificant in those parts.

marriages amongst people who fall in the same bloodline, like say a close cousin, are not encouraged.i too know that.but if this couple were so closely related as it is claimed by the village elders, wouldn't the couple themselves know it?they didn't even know that they were related so closely.and i doubt they are.for all you know their relationship with each other will probably be more than a couple of sentences long!so what's the point in this cross examination after 3 years of marriage and a healthy baby???has anyone even thought about the baby?

I really feel sorry for you to report this report when you have option for better things too. Anyway this all happens (manyatimes more idiotic)in a small pocket of Haryana where old customs still prevail and not in India per say. While your writeup presents it like it's general practice there, it's called aberrations and in a country of 1.2 billion you can find such aberrations frequently and make some bigots to laugh on.

The writer, unknowingly, writes that amongst "clan" marriages can't happen, actually it's 'gotra' (same family linegae) where in same 'gotra' marriages can't happen and it's a old custom & now medically proven it's significance.

The said couple will now move to 200 kms away in delhi and will live like husband wife. No worries Guyz!!!
