How to organize your work space

What does your desk say about you?  Your desk is a visual representation of your personality and professional competence.  Scary thought for some of you, huh?  It shouldn’t be.  You should be able to visit with co-workers, clients or business associates without stressing about the appearance of your office space.  If you find yourself saying “please excuse the mess” or “let’s meet in your office” it may be time for a little changes in the office.  Your space should reflect an image you are proud of, not ashamed or embarrassed about.  A friendly workspace can make you more productive and encourage an overall feeling of work satisfaction.  This is a place where you spend a lot of time and it should reflect your personality and personal style.  Here are some tips for a work space you’ll be proud to show off:

-     Choose a calming, motivating, happy, or whatever suits you as the theme for your space -     Hang only a few, significant awards, degrees or certificates

-     Don’t let bookshelves/filing cabinets sit empty, Don’t let bookshelves overflow with stuff-      Display a few special photos in a coordinating style of frames.

-     Add fresh flowers and/or candles for a more comfortable and appealing space

-      Utilize file drawers for storing paper.  Turn those piles into files!

-      Utilize an over-the-door hook for hanging your coat, purse, umbrella, etc

-      Use literature stands and business card holders for displaying literature and business  

       cards

-      Hang motivating posters

These tips will not only dramatically improve the appearance of your work space, but will also improve the quality of your work.  You’ll feel great entering and leaving your new space each and every day!
