how is doha the "capital of arab culture"?

pappajohns2
By pappajohns2

ive seen the billboards round town and comments claiming this in other threads. i thought it was a rotating title that went along with hosting an expo or something.

i am not bashing but seriously asking . . . how has doha shaped arab or world culture? petro dollars don't count and neither does shopping. all i see here is a lot of consumption and buildings be designed by foreigners and built by other foreigners. even the new museum was built by an american and full of artefacts from other countries.

the wiki entry for qatar doen't say much either and stories in the world press are not flattering. so I guess my first answer is "not much", but i am ready to learn and think otherwise.

Qatar does have good lamb biryani ; )

Glad to know you have reformed Scotiabank. From the above posts it looks like you had a rough night last night. Happy to have a civilized conversation with you some time.

I think this thread has been thoroughly hijacked now.

I never said "missed biryanis back home", I don't want to waste other posters time to read this rubbish anymore but you are straight up lying, I said there are many different styles of biryani in india but in qatar we have one. And yes most Qataris can, a lot of our words in the language contains words influenced from indians, all qataris know this.

Thank you genesis. As you can see in those threads I did not insult anyone after I spoke to the mods. And these posters get all upset and start making lies in desperation.

Dot.com I ignored your barks quite well as many have too.

I wrote in one thread that there is more than one kind of biryani in india and gkramer believes this is evidence that I am indian! and now tries to make this make sense with when I defended qatar against an indian poster, if he wasn't so ignorant he would realise that biryani is a very popular qatari dish and it now as much a part of our meals just like our typical foods. He does this lying and jumping ot conclusions after in another thread of his about muslim nations accepting gays he got mad and told other posters to "grow up" because they said he must be gay also. Shows you how their childish double standards work, they want to do all the attacking but don't want us to respond. Thank you genesis and ghazalz and other people who realise what these people are doing.

genesis abusing isn't really the most artistic form of expression but I don't mind him abusing me.

By the way I have been reading his posts for a while and He abuses in Hindi too, gets upset when someone from Pakistan or Afghanistan posts and calls them names, misses good old food back in India but is a Qatari??? Go figure.

He is not even a Qatari and is just trying to give you guys a bad name.

That being said, it's fun to have him around so I don't want a ban on him :o)

On that we can agree genesis! One sidedness is dull and no one learns anything.

I do think he (and papajohn for that matter) could leave out some of the inflammatory personal attacks though. If he is being tongue-and-cheek it does not come across that way. I enjoy your critiques (even though we dont always agree, lol!) because the focus is more on offering your viewpoint rather insulting the person with whom you disagree by calling them names. For example, I liked your thread on the Evening Standard article, but the thread had degenerated into personal insults by the time I saw it this morning, so there was no point participating. Same with this thread. I think people tried to engage seriously with it, but it too degenerated into name calling.

To avoid being a hijacker--I wish more would be done to advertise the cultural events. The Museum of Islamic Art is a great example of an underused cultural resource--fantastic facilities, wonderful exhibits, but poorly attended.

There is misconception among the organizers that cultural events are meant for certain intellectuals and people working for the media although all events are marked for the general public

Here is a QL thread of event went without being properly advertised

continues to plague event planners here. It seems like there is so much effort and expense being put into bringing a variety of events and entertainment opportunities here to Doha, but we rarely hear about them until after they are over and we read the write-up in the paper.

I think the prime event so far was the Qatar marine festival last April , which represented tradition of pearl diving

Many cultural weeks from different countries took place but wasn't up to expectation due to poor advertisement.

It's the slogan used for the Arab league annual celebration of Arab cities(a UNESCO initiative) , 2010 marked Doha as the cultural capital. Many Qatari intellects and newspaper columnists have criticized the poor organization of events. The organizing committee justification is that events are all year long as per a monthly schedule announced through their website

http://www.doha2010.com.qa/

Many of the planned events were postponed for the year last quarter due to the delay of the cultural village inauguration which is expected in September

"Capital of Arab Culture" is really a bit pompous, to say the least. I chalked it up to some british marketing company's desire to play to the client, but personally I doubt even the Qataris believe Doha is the capital of arab culture. At least none of the ones I know do. They all laughed at the ludicrous nature of the assertion.

It would be far better to say, "Doha: Capital of Qatari Culture" and enjoy that for what it is.

Dear Moderators and Qatar Living contributors,

I have visited Qatar Living's website for over a year, enjoying the friendly advice and informative discussions. I have never bothered signing up for an account with Qatar Living until now, because, quite honestly, I am a bit behind the times when it comes to computers. However, watching the user named Scotiabank hound other participants these past two nights has infuriated me. He is the definition of a cyber bully, violating the rules of conduct and ruining discussions.

I have watched as he follows someone across QL to hound them. Yes, others have risen to his baiting, and they should be a little embarrassed, but the user Scotiabank's behavior is shameful and against the rules. After seeing his handiwork again this evening, I took some time to look up his other posts and discovered that he has been doing this for over a year, calling names, insulting nationalities, making racist and threatening remarks, and being generally divisive and inflammatory. The moderators have deleted many of his posts for abuse and last night even threatened to remove him. It is clear he has not learned his lesson, and so the threat should be carried out. Let him back in later if you must, but put him in "time out" for a good long while.

Some say Scotiabank is an "impostor" and that he has fabricated his user identity. I have found no proof of this beyond the accusations made on quite a few occasions. Many of the posts his accusers refer to as holding proof have been deleted or edited, so I cannot pass judgment but is is a little suspicious. At the end of the day it does not really matter much as I suppose plenty of others do a little fudging on their biography page.

I suppose now this Scotiabank will take a stab at me, calling me a thug, slut, leech or whatever filth his mind can conjure. And he will then blame everyone else for his misdeeds. But I am a forty-six-year-old grandma from Texas, so hardly the type. I am Christian but I have great respect for all those who are devout in their religion and I found the devoutness of some of our Muslim neighbors to be inspirational. I am no longer in Qatar, so I have little to lose here. I just like coming on to Qatar Living and reading about what is new with a people and a country that I found to be so welcoming.

Anyway . . . I have said my peace. I will not log-on to Qatar Living for a while, because I do not what to read the nastiness that Scotiabank uses against me. Hopefully when I do come back the moderators will have removed it and him, and Qatar Living will be a better place.

With all the best and sincerest of wishes,

seniormom

In other words my fellow posters, he is attempting to save face after ranting and insulting me with his incorrect information only to get exposed twice! One for the fact itself, then claiming I relied on silly publications! LOL!

PS: Only his fellow internet thugs created this rumour that I am an impostor because I said in one thread india has many types of biryani but Qatar has only one, shows you how they are very ignorant about not only news facts, but also other people cultures and expect everyone else to be the same! LOL

Per Scotia's post above. good for qatar for overtaking the USA as the leading producer for LNG. happy to admit that I was looking at an article from earlier in the year and was mistaken. not a big deal.

scotiabank . . . now that fellow QLers have identified you as an impostor who has fabricated a false identity here i have no desire to have exchanges with you. i enjoyed our earlier exchanges as entertaining sparing, but since you are not who you say you are that makes them creepy and meaningless. stop following me around QL and trying to engage with me by posting on the thread i started. i REALLY am done talking to you.

I am a little bemused by this. The capital of Arab Culture is a title given to a city for a year which allows it to show the rest of the world it's heritage, culture and developement by various means including expos, communal gatherings, talks, prsentations, buildings etc etc.

It helps a city not only present a face to the outside world, but also for its own peoples to look inwards and understand themselves..

You don't have to respond to me, the facts have been posted, you are just embarrassed I exposed your ignorance. And I am Qatari, you need more solid evidence than another fellow Qatar basher to prove I am not, you barely know anything about the country you live in and world politics, you are in no position to call anybody a fraud! For the American businessman Doha is a friendly and honest place to operate. I have met with folks who labor in the sun all the way through Royals, an all are polite welcoming and inviting. If Qatar had nothing more than the friendly approach they use in business that would still keep me here. I can make just as much running projects in Saudi, Kuwait, or Iraq, but the only real risk in Qatar is heat stroke and dehydration for the unprepared. I cannot say the same for all areas in the Gulf. The culture is rich here, the Qatari people that I have met have asked of me only that I learn Arabic to better understand how thing are done here. Anyone who thinks a country who went from one of the poorest to the richest has overlooked an important fact. In order to harness and retain great wealth, great wisdom is necessary. To be poor and wise, that is hard work, but to then handle sudden great wealth also, most stories like this would have already ended in someone taking everything away. That part o the culture could have it's own museum.

LMAO at this pappa, you know so much about gangster rap culture maybe you should spend more time actually reading up on facts and relevant news instead of trying to look smart and end up looking foolish, Qatar is the biggest LNG producer in the world http://oilprice.com/Energy/Natural-Gas/Qatar-The-Worlds-Biggest-LNG-Producer-Holding-Onto-its-Gas.html

i read your post. spending money does not equal culture. the museum is a beautiful american-designed building full of cultural artefacts from OTHER cultures. the exhibition i went to was fantastic and i am glad the petrol dollars are going on something worthwhile. that it was almost empty was shameful.

now reread my last post. i am calling YOU the slave to western materialism if you truly think money equals culture. you are not qatar.

Did you even read what I wrote or just trying to argue for the sake of arguing? How is spending billions to preserve islamic artifacts and history being "slave to western materialism"? Or perhaps you prefer what happened to egypt with all their culture and history stolen by british and other european archaeologist. Qatar spend a fortune to bring these kind of things back to islamic arabic countries.

word up scotia--006.

not bashing qatar just asking about its cultural contribution and legitimacy of its claim over much older arab cities and cultures. its a serious question because i really dont know much about this place and saw the billboards. the skyline is impressive and so is the museum but its all designed by foreigners. even the ad campaign is done by foreigners. hoping someone can inform me. all I learned so far is Scotia is xenophobic. besides telling me that qatar has a bunch of money, how about responding to the question in the post. or are you such a slave to western materialism that you think money = culture?

ghazalz--i appreciate your viewpoint but could you be more specific? pakistan, for example, has a well-known ancient history steeped in military tradition and amazing architecture that is replicated through the world.
