Help with settings for 3Com wifi router on Qtel

Comet
By Comet

Hi. I've just bought a 3Com OfficeConnect ADSL modem / wireless router, and have spent a couple of hours trying to get it working. There's no problem with the network itself, but it doesn't even attempt to connect to the internet. I'm using PPPoA, VPI 8, VCI 35, VCMUX... everything else I left on default - and nothing whatever happens. When I check the ATM status and press 'connect' it does nothing, and the online LED never even blinks. No error messages, nothing at all.

If anyone's successfully set one of these up, or can spot the settings that I've forgotten, I'd be really grateful.

We found a hard time also in setting it up but finally got it.

As instructed, we typed -http:192.168.1.1.

then once the link is opened, we typed admin as the default password

we only tinkered with the internet settings, set up the encryption and chose WPA (TKIP)and set up the network key

VPI = 8

VCI = 35

PPPoE

Also, i cannot recall the exact tab, but i also set up the account name and password provided by qtel. I cannot recall if it's the LAN settings or what..but there's a tab there that you have to fill it in with the details provided to you by qtel.

So far, our connection using 3com is okay.

When I get home, I'll try to look into it again and send you a PM on the detailed process of setting it up.

I just had the same problem. After looking for answers, including from this forum, I found the correct setup:

PPPoE (not PPPoA)

LLC

VPI = 8

VCI = 135

If there is MTU, then it is 1460

It works well know, and finally I got my wifi connection in my house.

Thanks comet for replying

i will try to return mine, but i dont have the reset ,but i have all the stuff inside the package!

how you connect this router to the point which QTel provide , realy there are two way,i tried one,which is connected directly to the point, so it will word as stand alone,this way didnt work with me

the 2nd way is to connect to the switch which provided by qtel whic is connected to the WI FI router(they use this way of connection wo increase the downloading rate,that what they told me when i asked why this crazy way) and then it will work as a local network,but in this case it will not be fast as it should , but i will try this way

anyway thanks for help and i wish that i can connect to the internet very soon

Regards

I took mine back just as it was, but with all the packaging etc. They won't check the working of it - in my case they didn't even take all the bits out of the box to make sure they were all there. I got a voucher for the full amount to spend on anything I wanted, so long as I did so within 24 hours. I got the other router - and some household stuff with the spare 40 Riyals! If they still have the US Robotics one you could try that - I'm having no problems with it. The only thing to take care of is telling it a country when you start the set up. Qatar isn't in the drop-down list and if you don't specify any country it won't start up the wireless. I selected UK, and it works fine now.

You can get a Thomson Speedtouch wi-fi router at Sofitel.

Hi comet

I think i will try to return my 3com from carrefour, but i dont

have the reset,dont know if i need it or not ??

I didn't know there was a Thomson Speedtouch wifi router - not seen it for sale anywhere.

In any case, I returned the 3Com router to Carrefour and brought home a USRobotics one instead, which works perfectly. And it was QR40 cheaper, and seems to have a stronger signal than the 3Com one did.

Thanks for the advice all round, and particularly to treasures1234 and Terramax for making it clear that it was the router causing the problems, not my settings.

That's the problem with ADSL/ADSL2. If it doesn't work it won't. In Qatar the best bet is to buy a Thomson Speedtouch wireless router, it is fully supported by Qtel.

i had the same problem and what you need to do is go to your settings and turn the firewall off. it should work after that.

Hi there.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll maybe give that one a go tomorrow, if I haven't changed my router for another one by then.

And I always have something to read with me when I phone Qtel... just like the phone company back home, actually.

Comet - Have you tried calling QTel. Have them reset your DSL line at their end. Just tell them (fib) your internet was fine and stopped working for no reason. They'll ask you to disconnect your router from phone socket and connect back in 15 mins (while they do a reset). Now, once this is done and if you still have problems atleast you'll be sure it's not at their end.

Tip: Use a cordless phone with speakerphone when calling QTel. You'll be on hold for so long that this way you can atleast get some other stuff (like showering etc) done in the meantime.

Well, I took the router back to the shop (Carrefour at Villagio) and they tried to get it going and couldn't. They had exactly the same router up and running there, with the 'online' LED on. They suggested replacing the unit and agreed to configure it for me, but it took SO LONG I had to leave, and just made a note of the settings instead. Brought the replacement unit home and guess what - no internet connection. Wireless is fine, but the 'online' LED never even blinks. Tomorrow I'm going back to swap it for another variety.

Has anyone had positive experiences with US Robotics?

Hi Comet

The same thing happen with me, i bought a new one from the mall

a 3COM OfficeConnect ADSL wireless rounter, it suppose to work cause i tried one in my country , i take the setting from QTEL, spending days trying, it supposed to take 15 mnts to work, i dont know why it is not working, really i think the problem is the competability between 3com abd the QTEL..

please confirm me if changing the router, fix the problem

Thanks for that suggestion. I'll check with friends that I've got ALL the settings right, and then I'll try with the same type of router they're using, which is Netgear, I think.

The 3com router was such a bargain. I should have known it was too good to be true.

if it is still not working till now this mean the 3com router is not compatable with Qtel exchange

actually this with happened with us we have many branches and we bought 3com router but some of them worked and some didn't and then we informed by Qtel some exchanges ( areas ) u can't use 3com router

try to use another router and check
